    CHOLESTEROL SCREENING:PROCEDURES

    Before prick:

    CHOLESTEROL SCREENING:TIPS & ADVICE

    During prick:

REMEMBER: dont be afraid to prick the patient.Pricking them hard ONCE is better than having to

    prick them TWICE!

Make sure there is an adequate size blood on thefigure before taking the sample.

Have the patient stand up for you if you havetrouble getting a sample.

    CHOLESTEROL SCREENING:TIPS & ADVICE

    Other things to know:

Capillary tubes will clot with blood if the sample is nottaken quickly.

Collect the blood sample with the capillary tube lying

sideways to the finger (this will maximize the amount of

blood collected and minimize air bubbles).

    Positioning the Cuff

    1. Determine the right

    size cuff for the patient

    2. Wrap cuff around arm

    3. Align arrow on cuffwith the brachial artery

    Pulse Obliteration Technique

    1. Press using the index and middle fingers

to feel the patients radial pulse

    2. Inflate cuff until the pressure is no longer

felt (aka obliterated)3. Record this value.

    19/21

    Inflating the Cuff

    1. Position the

    diaphragm of the

    stethoscope above the

    brachial artery

    2. Inflate cuff to

    ~20mmHg above the

    recorded value from

    previous step

  • 7/30/2019 PHH Training Slides

    20/21

    Deflating the Cuff

    3. Deflate cuff at 2-3mmHg/s until the 1st

    Korotkoff sound is heard.

    This is the systolic value.

    4. Continue deflating until the sound

    disappears (~5th Korotkoff sound).

    This is the diastolic value.
