WILDERNESS: Lent2020@Concord (February 26 – April 11)
by Pastor Steve
As we journey through the season of Lent this year, we’ll explore together what it means to be in the
“wilderness,” an image that appears throughout scripture. Sometimes wilderness refers to a literal place, like
the land through which the Hebrew people travel after God liberates them from slavery in Egypt. Sometimes
wilderness is a metaphor for dry and empty places in our lives or hearts. Whatever the word points to, a
common thread is that wilderness is a place where God is encountered. We’ll explore this idea throughout the
season through sermon texts and themes, devotional booklets for use at home, poetry and visual art, and
artistic enhancements to our worship environment in the sanctuary.
I will also lead a six-week adult education series, “Voices from the Wilderness,” which will meet 7:00-8:00pm
Mondays in Jessie’s Room (March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; and April 6). The series will look at the lives and writings of
Dietrich Bonhoeffer and C. S. Lewis, two influential 20th-century Christian thinkers whose works were shaped by
their own experiences of God at work in the world and in their own lives. And we’ll consider this: what can we
learn from them to help us in our walk with the Lord in our own unique place and time? No preparation or
registration is required, just come and join the conversation!

GOSPEL SUNDAY MARCH 1
10:30AM WORSHIP SERVICE
One Sunday each year, in the middle of winter, often the first Sunday of
Lent, we fill the Sunday worship with the uplifting, energizing sounds of
gospel music. With professional contemporary ensemble, a well-
rehearsed choir, soloists, and lots of congregational participation, it is a
very stirring day.
But what is gospel music, anyway? The answer depends much upon who
and when you ask; it varies greatly depending upon social and cultural context. However traditional black
gospel, southern, bluegrass, and other sub-genres maintain common elements: a strong vocal presence with
thick, close harmonies; call and response and “lining out” of vocal parts; folk and contemporary music styles;
texts of testimony, persuasion, warning, and exhortation with deep biblical roots. With substantial cultural
influence both within and outside of the church, we explore the best of the standard gospel music repertoire.
An unusual but wonderful way to begin our Lenten journey!
HONORS CHOIR CONCERT
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15 ~ 1:00PM
CONCORD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SANCTUARY
A concert by the 3rd Annual Delaware Vocal Jazz
Honors Choir will take place at Concord on Feb. 15 at
1:00pm. Similar to an All-State Choir event, it gathers
the better singers throughout the state for a unique
choral experience. The choir is sponsored by Delaware American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Delaware
Music Educators Association (DMEA), and The Music School of Delaware.
Two choirs will perform, each accompanied by a professional jazz trio. One choir, comprised of 7th and 8th
graders from around the state, will be conducted by Dr. Kathleen Shannon. Dr. Shannon is a Choral Music
consultant, Chorus Master of the York Symphony Chorus, part-time instructor at West Virginia University,
Adjunct Professor of Music at Temple University, and Adjunct Instructor at Salem Community College.
Also performing will be a high school choir comprised of students from all parts of the state under the direction
of Marty Lassman. Mr. Lassman is a professional pianist, retired choral director at the Cab Calloway School of
the Arts, and current director of two jazz choirs at The Music School of Delaware.
The concert will be free and open to the public but donations to help defray costs will gladly be accepted. The
choirs will rehearse in Milford, DE for two days prior to the concert and will prepare music including Moonglow,
The Beatles’ Yesterday, Paul Simon’s At the Zoo, Irving Berlin’s Blue Skies, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s One Note
Samba and several more pieces.
* SPIRITUAL FORMATION
ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
➢ Embracing Emergence Christianity Suns. through Feb. 9, 9:30-10:20am, Jessie’s Room
Phyllis Tickle is the founding editor of the religion department of Publishers Weekly, and an author,
lecturer, and workshop leader. In this DVD series, she invites us to examine the changing face of
Christianity and culture, identifying the great upheavals that occur in Western culture and
Christianity every 500 years. The last was the Great Reformation in the 1500s and the next is
happening now. Where might we be headed? This course has generated deep and meaningful
discussion, so we may extend beyond Feb. 9.
➢ Gospel in Life: Grace Changes Everything Sundays, Feb. 10 – March 3, 9:30-10:20am, Jessie’s Room
Timothy Keller is the senior pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in
Manhattan and a best-selling author. This is a DVD series on the gospel and how it
is lived out in all of life – first in your heart, then in your community, and then out
into the world. Beginning with a discussion of the city, our home now, the world
that is, Keller closes with the theme of the eternal city, our heavenly home, that
world that is to come. In between we will look at how the gospel changes our
hearts, changes our community, and changes how we live in the world.
➢ Concord Book Club Third Sundays @ 9:45-10:25am, Sanctuary Lounge
We meet monthly on the third Sunday. For our next meeting on February 16 in the Sanctuary
Lounge, we’ll be reading and discussing The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele
Richardson. Questions? Contact Heather Janas.
➢ Faith in Literature Monday, February 17 @ 1:00pm
Concord’s weekday book group meets monthly to read and discuss faith-based literature. Our next
meeting will be Monday, Feb. 17, 1:00pm at the home of Joyce Johnson (1005 S. Hilton Road, Oak Lane
Manor, 655-3411). Reading assignments: Our Towns by James & Deborah Fallows, “In the Air” and
“Columbus, OH” (pp. 140-168) and from 50 Great Stories, “A Girl from Red Lion, P.A.” by Mencken. New
members are always welcome!
➢ Mug & Muffin Bible Study Wednesdays @ 9:30am, Sanctuary Lounge
Join Pastor Steve or our guest preacher for a thought-provoking discussion of the text for Sunday
morning’s sermon. Come, enjoy the fellowship…and the muffins!

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
“Since 1990, young people have been leading the charge and inspiring others to collect dollars and food in the
weeks leading up to the Big Game. Teaming up with local partners, these groups give 100% of donations to local
charities, changing the nation’s largest weekend of football into the largest weekend of caring.”
www.souperbowl.org
This year Concord Youth Group is collecting non-perishable food and monetary donations to support
Hanover Food Closet, whose mission is to serve the hungry in Wilmington and the surrounding communities.
Canned goods and staples can be dropped off outside the Preschool entry, at the Fellowship Hall entrance, or
in the church narthex until the morning of Sunday, February 2.
Monetary donations can be dropped off to the Church or Preschool Offices, or mailed to:

MLK Day of Service @ Concord Many thanks to all who came out and spent the morning of January 20 cleaning up, cleaning out, and organizing
several areas of the church that were in need of attention: the Concord Library, Deacons’ Closet, the Donation &
Preschool Closet (previously known as the Boy Scout Closet), and the tables in Fellowship Hall. There was plenty
of scrubbing, “weeding out,” and inventory taken. Now our church members and Preschool staff can access and
enjoy the spaces and many resources we have!

MISSION & OUTREACH
FRIENDSHIP HOUSE CORNER
MINISTRY THROUGH SOCKSPLUS CAMPAIGN
Concord and Friendship House have launched our SocksPLUS initiative to help
collect socks PLUS other essential items needed by the homeless. And, for
thousands of New Castle County’s homeless men, women, and children, socks
are a gift that’s never taken for granted. In fact, they are the item most
requested by anyone living outside.
The needs of the poor and homeless are constant throughout the year. During
the fall and harsh winter months, socks, gloves, hats, boots, and warm clothing
protect them from frostbite and hypothermia. In the spring, it’s important to
have water-resistant blankets and clothing to stay dry. In the summer,
backpacks, bottled water, insect repellent, and toiletries are in high demand.
We hope you will join our efforts to help the least among us. SocksPLUS collection bins are located in the
Narthex and by the Preschool Office. We will collect items in January and February and distribute the socks,
etc. at Code Purple events and through the Clothing Bank. Requested items include:
Socks* Hats Gloves
Scarves Coats Towels/Wash Cloths
Back packs Gym bags Tissues
* Black or dark-colored socks: The ideal socks are men’s or women’s BLACK or dark-colored cotton crew socks (they don’t show
the dirt like white socks) with reinforced toe and heel. These can be purchased in multi-packs at Costco, Kohls, Target, etc.
We encourage you to contribute in your own way by sharing your time, support, ideas, and SOCKS. Check out
organizations like Homeless Connections, Socks4Cancer, and Joy of Sox. A quick glance at their campaigns gives
you both practical tools and the emotional inspiration you need to get started. Melanie Slezak had a
Kindergarten Giving Tree at her school. Nancy Tucker collected items at work. Please contact John Barineau
([email protected]) if you want to organize an event.
FRIENDSHIP HOUSE BREAKFAST Concord is scheduled to provide Friendship House breakfast prep and serving
help on the afternoon of March 14 (prep) and at 6:45am on March 15 (serving)
at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 N. Shipley Street,
Wilmington, DE 19801. There is parking at the church and Friendship House
staff are on hand to guide our efforts. If you wish to volunteer to be part of
this mission opportunity, please contact Dottie Harding ([email protected],
302/764-3067).
BLANKET SUNDAY – MARCH 8
The Church World Service Blanket ministry is an easy way for churches to participate in a broad-reaching mission
to provide our neighbors that are experiencing poverty, displacement, or disaster with a warm blanket to comfort
them in their time of need. Information about this ministry will be posted on the Mission Board and envelopes for
donations will be in the pews at the beginning of February.
(Please make checks payable to Concord Church, memo: Blankets.
You can also donate using your phone through Zell or PayPal. Please indicate that the donation is for blankets.)
SHARE THE SPIRIT
CONCORD’S HOLIDAY MISSION GIVING
Many thanks to everyone who participated in our Share the Spirit efforts this year!
Your generosity and the gift of your time to shop, sort, and deliver items made the
holidays much brighter for recipients at Children & Families First, Friendship House,
DACA, and the Seamen’s Center.
CHRISTMAS AT SEA
From Joan Lyons, Executive Director of the Seamen’s Center of Wilmington:
Dear Rev. Clark:
As we usher in the New Year, it is the perfect time to reflect and say thank you to the community that helped to
provide our Christmas at Sea program… Together, 127 individuals and groups that participated this year managed
to make possible the delivery of 1,204 ditty boxes. The depth of giving was beyond all expectations, and we will
joyfully be giving soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes to ships arriving in the New Year!
The one aspect of Christmas at Sea that our contributors can’t see is the gratitude expressed by the seafarers… I
hope that each of you will know the joy these gifts brought to the crews of 54 ships that arrived in Delaware
during the holiday season. Thank you!
DESIGNATED BENEVOLENCES IN 2020
Concord has a history of strong benevolence giving, i.e. funds that are applied to various external
missions. In fact, for at least the last 45 years, more than 25% of the donations received by
Concord Presbyterian Church have been passed along to external organizations. The Session
very much wants to continue and strengthen this outreach. The Session is responsible for
approving what organizations are the recipients of our benevolence donations.
Session has approved (on 1/22/2020) a list of organizations for which they will ask
congregational support with their time and energy, and for which Concord will receive and
transfer donations (money and goods) from its members in 2020. This is not to say that a
different organization cannot be added to the list during the course of the year, but this will
require approval by Session. The list will be renewed and published at the beginning of each
year. If a favorite charity of yours is not on the list, you are encouraged to donate directly to that organization.
We look forward to strong support by our members for these mission/organizations in 2020:
1. Friendship House
2. Rev. Karla Ann Koll
3. Emmanuel Dining Room
4. Seamen’s Center of Wilmington
5. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (disaster relief)
6. Concord Presbyterian Scholarship Program (CPSP)
7. Preschool scholarships

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS!
It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Anaís Brutus, Gail Dill, and Renée Leeson-Fuchs
into church membership in December. Here’s a little introduction to help you get to know them better.
Anaís Brutus was born and raised in Chile, where her family still lives. She has
been living in the States for thirteen years and in Fairfax for seven. She is a
teacher, teaching second grade in a Spanish Immersion program. This is her first
year working at Lancashire Elementary School. Her life is busy introducing her
daughter Aleea to different activities. She loves music, dance and traveling. She
often spends the summer in Chile with her parents, sisters, and nieces.
Gail Dill is married to Fred Dill. She worked at University of Delaware, Widener University,
A.I. duPont Hospital, and DuPont as an Executive Assistant, retiring from DuPont with thirty
years of service on November 30, 2018. Her wonderful son, Brian Mowll, is a chiropractor
and diabetes wellness educator. She is blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Nicolas
(18), Annie (15), Mason (9), and Max (6) – the loves of her life! Gail came to Concord
Presbyterian after a long journey of faith searching. She is so happy to be a part of the
wonderful family at Concord and continuing to learn about Jesus.
Renee Leeson-Fuchs is married to Ben Fuchs.
She is an occupational therapist. However,
she is currently staying home with their two
daughters Ella (5) and Isabel (2-1/2). She
enjoys reading, having friends over, baking,
traveling, and being outdoors.
FLOWER GUILD
Thanks…
…to all of you who were on hand to help us decorate the Sanctuary for the Christmas
season. Your gracious donation of your time and talents produced lovely results, as always!
Additional thanks to everyone who was able to assist in taking the decorations down,
which is never as much fun. Your assistance with this task was invaluable!
Special thanks to those who contributed financially to the Christmas Flower Fund. Your
gifts were most appreciated, and the Sanctuary reflected your generosity of spirit!
New Florist After many years of service to Concord Presbyterian and a host of other
churches, Kitty Breger of Breger Flowers has retired at age 86. Pastor Steve
Clark wrote to her expressing Concord’s gratitude for all her help over the
years.
Flowers are now being provided by Belak Flowers. John Belak and his family
have long provided flowers to numerous churches in our immediate area.
We have already received some very positive comments about the flowers
they have provided since the beginning of the year and look forward to
establishing a good working relationship with them.

PERSAK MEMORIAL SERVICE
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8 @ 3:00PM
A memorial service for Bobbe & Ken Persak will be held here at Concord in the
Sanctuary next Saturday, February 8 at 3:00pm. Pastor Steve Clark will lead this
service remembering the Persaks, long-time members of our Concord family. Bobbe
passed away in April 2018, followed by Ken in September 2019. After the service,
their ashes will be interred in Concord’s Memorial Garden.

To My Friends at Concord:
Many thanks for the cards, phone calls, and other messages on my
birthday. [Anna Mae turned 103 on Jan. 8.] All were greatly appreciated and
reminded me of my connection with Concord since 1954!
God bless you all,
Anna Mae Landt
CHURCH LIBRARY UPDATE
On Concord’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, a group of volunteers cleaned and straightened the Church
Library. They thought it might be a good time to remind the congregation that we actually have a library…
▪ Where? Down the hall from the Church
Office (next to Christina’s office)
▪ What’s in there? A cozy couch and
comfy chair to sit on and enjoy books
for children and adults, as well as a
table for small meetings.
▪ Can I borrow books? Not only books,
but a selection of puzzles too!
▪ How do I borrow these books and
puzzles? Couldn’t be easier! It’s no
longer necessary to fill out a card – just
take the item home and return it when
you’re finished.
