It is with great excitement that we embark on our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trial In 2019 Margaret River Primary School will be trialling a BYOD program with students and teachers in Year 5 and 6 This initial trial program has been under development for the past few years and through consultation with Margaret River High School and other state primary schools who have successfully implemented BYOD programs we are now ready to trial BYOD at Margaret River Primary At Margaret River PS we have invested in a range of digital learning devices as educational tools to support teaching and learning programs for a number of years Under the BYOD initiative Year 5 and 6 students will have the opportunity to bring their own device to school to use in the classroom to support learning It is important to recognise that students who do not bring in a device to school will still have access to school devices It is not compulsory for students to bring a device and there is no expectation that students do so

Our Kindy students have been learning about the people in our community who help us Last week they had a visit from our local police who spoke about the many roles that they play in our community which involves more that just enforcing law and order including finding lost and wanted people and helping with crowds in busy places There was some very interesting discussion with Constable Murphy reassuring the children he would do his best to protect them if
a giant ant came crashing through Margaret River The K3 and K4 students then had lots of fun when they
transformed their dramatic play
On Monday at MRPS we held an assembly to recognise Remembrance Day A brief introduction reminded
the students of the importance of remembering and reflecting on the sacrifice of those before us
A wreath was laid and students were invited to place any flowers they had brought Councillor Annabel
Bancroft read out the Ode of Remembrance
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
The Last Post was played and singing of the National Anthem concluded the service

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values
Cooperation Empathy Enthusiasm Flexibility Honesty and Respect
Flexibility - Easy to change or adapt
At Margaret River Primary School one of our core values is flexibilitymdashthe ability to adapt change and rise to new
challenges set forth by learning experiences At this school we help students to become flexible thinkers who are able to
question existing thinking adapt and creatively meet the demands of the future Flexibility means being able to make
changes like meeting new friends not getting upset if there are changes and things donrsquot go your way Remember that a
tree that isnrsquot flexible or wonrsquot bend is easily broken

What is caffeine Caffeine is a stimulant drug which in its purest form consists of bitter-tasting crystals Caffeine is found
in many common substances such as coffee tea cocoa chocolate cola energy drinks and bars some prescription and
over the counter medicines and other stimulants such as guarana Caffeine is the most commonly used drug in the world
bull Caffeine is particularly harmful for young children because it causes sleep problems anxiety irritability and bed
wetting
bull Energy drinks should be avoided by children less than 15 years old due to high levels of caffeine in these
products
bull The effects of caffeine like those of any drug differ from person to person depending on their age body size
and general health
bull Disturbing physical effects of caffeine include anxiety irritability increased breathing and heart rates headaches
and dehydration
bull Doctors recommend that children consume less than 100mg of caffeine per day which is approximately one
cola drink and a 20g chocolate bar
bull Many of the caffeine products that children consume also contain high levels of sugar
Its a good idea to avoid caffeine when you are young then your body can do its best job of helping you grow making
sure that you get the best sleep to keep you healthy Having a healthy diet and an active lifestyle will give you all the
energy you need Have you ever tried hot water with some fresh lemon lime or ginger or a fresh fruit smoothie for a
refreshing pick me up instead of caffeine
Fast Facts
Cola drinks 30-72 mg of caffeine
Hot chocolate 10mg of caffeine
Energy drinks 150mg or more of caffeine
