Paris,October2017:On10November, during theParis Photo fair, Sotheby’swill offer atauctiontwoexceptionalphotographysalesinParis.The first auction will be devoted to a major European collection, with around 100lots,includingseveralremarkableprintsbyfamousfashionphotographer IrvingPenn,currentlyfeaturing inanexhibitionattheGrandPalais. Thecollectionalso includes iconicworksbyleading photographers of their times, like Horst P Horst, Robert Mapplethorpe, HelmutNewton and Araki. Also worth noting is a splendid selection of American photographs,includingbyAnselAdams,WalkerEvans,RobertFrankandWilliamEggleston.The second sale, now a yearly event in Paris every autumn, provides a rich overview ofphotographyfromthe19thcenturytothepresentday.Sotheby’swillbeofferingsomerare19thcenturyworks,wherekeypieces includeoneof theearliestviewsofNotre-DamedeParis, somemagnificent shotsbyGustave LeGray, anda large selectionof contemporaryphotographsbyThomasStruth,HiroshiSugimotoandRobertMapplethorpe.19thcenturyphotographsforthefirsttimeatauction

Sotheby’s is proud to be presenting a group ofdaguerreotypes including a rare illustration of earlyphotography:oneofthefirstknownviewsofthefaçadeofNotre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, attributed to VincentChevalier(Estimate:€100,000-150,000).This is a remarkable opportunity for collectors ofphotographs from this period looking for rare items toacquirethisdaguerreotype,whichhasremainedinthesamecollectionforovertwentyyears.There are two other versions of this daguerrotype. One,probably taken during the same day and now in privatehands, was listed as a Historic Monument in 1988. The

secondisnowintheMuseumofHistoryofScience,Oxford.Three magnificent prints by Gustave Le Gray is also one of the highlights of Sotheby'sNovembersale.TheycomefromanalbumcompiledbyaSwedishgeneralduringatourofEuropebetween1857and1859.Thesephotographs,likethislight-filledMerMéditerranée(Estimate:€30,000-50,000),haveneverseenthelightofday,andhavecomedowntousinextraordinarycondition.

IrvingPenn

Mainly famous for his fashion photographs, IrvingPenn is represented here in a completely differentlight with this astonishing still life, Frozen Foods(Estimate: €70,000-90,000). Here the artist hastransformedthefrozenblocksof fruitandvegetablesinto a colourful composition, setting it against aneutral background to create an effect ofmonumentality. This simultaneously minimalist,colourful layout makes it one of Irving Penn's mostspectacular pictures. The sale also includes somestriking and almost pictorial photographs, includingStillLifewithWatermelon(Estimate:€60,000-80,000)andPotatoes and Baltic Herring (Estimate: €12,000-18,000).

Anotherartistwellknownforhisextraordinarilysensiblephotographsofflowers isRobertMappelthorpe:thesaleincludesafineseriesofflowers, likeCallaLily(Estimate:€50,000-70,000).OnTheRoad

Several photographers whose works feature inthe two sales crisscrossed the roads of Europeand theUS. These long journeyswere a pretextforsomeremarkablephotographs.Robert Frank travelled across America, castinghimselfasawitnessoftheBeatGeneration.WithHighway 40 (Estimate: €30,000-50,000), the

photographer captures a stage on his long tour through the wet windscreen of a car, inwhichhewastravellingwithJackKerouac.Meanwhile,RichardAvedontemporarilydesertedthefashionworld in1979totravelacrossthewesternstatesofAmerica.This trip gave rise to the historical series entitled ‘In TheAmerican West’, which includes this picture: Danny Lane,fourteen years old, Christine Coil, seventeen years old(Estimate: €60,000-80,000). Avedon's genius finds fullexpression in these portraits, which raised photographs oftotallyordinarypeopletoaniconicstatus.

WilliamKleindrewinspirationfromthestreetsofNewYork.In1955,hespentseveralmonthstakingnumerousphotos,whichhethenassembledinhisbook Life isGoodandGood forYou inNewYork:Trance Witness Revels. The book ends with anapocalyptic view of the city, Atom Bomb Sky(Estimate: €30,000- 50,000). This particular printis a unique enlargement, commissioned directlyfromtheartist.

The same streets inspired the German photographer Thomas Struth in 1978. When theKunstakademieawardedhimagrantenablinghimtoliveandworkinNewYork,hefocusedentirely on its streets for six months,taking some extraordinary photographslike 58th Street/5th Ave. (Grand ArmyPlaza),estimatedat€30,000-50,000.Severalworks byBernd andHilla Becherfeature in this sale, including these iconicpictures of Water Tower Typology(Estimate:€90,000-120,000),makingtheirfirst appearance at public auction. TheBechers marked the history ofphotographybydedicating theirwork to industrialbuilding typologies,photographed faceon.Dating from1977 to1990, this seriesof sixphotographswasproducedby the coupleduringtheirtravelsinEuropeandtheUSA.
