    This class will give the student an introductory knowledge ofphotography. The student will learn how to operate a camera, developfilm, and make photographic prints. We will also discuss the history ofthe medium and its place in contemporary culture. Students willcomplete assignments designed to develop both their technical skillsand aesthetic awareness. Students will be required to keep a journal

    to document ideas. Students will be required to compile a technicalnotebook in the form of a portfolio book containing photographs fromthe technical assignments and corresponding notes as well as a finalportfolio of 12 16 mounted prints.

    REQUIRED TEXTBOOK:Photography, London, Stone and Upton, Ninth edition

    SUPPLY LIST:- A camera with lens (or lenses) that allows full manual operation with

    a built-in light meter

    - Film developing tank with two reels stainless steel or plastic (Irecommend Paterson plastic tanks and reels)

    - Thermometer- Towel and paper towels- Negative sleeves (Print Files 35-7B)- 3-ring binder or 3-ring negative binder box- Gray card- Photo paper (Ilford Multigrade IV RC, 8x10 100 sheet box preferably

    PEARL surface)- 20 rolls of film: either Kodak Tri-x or Ilford HP5 (PLEASE - NO Kodak T-

    Max or Ilford Delta films)

    - Multigrade printing filters, 4 or 6 (preferably Ilford)- OOO spotting brush and a small white plate or painting palette- Can of Dust-off- Bottle opener- Masking tape- Scissors- Metal ruler- X-acto knife

    ATTENDANCE POLICYIf you miss more than 3 classes, your final grade will be dropped oneletter grade.If you miss more than 5 classes, you will fail this class.If you come to class 30 minutes late, you will be counted absent.

    GRADING POLICYAssignments must be turned in on time. Assignments will be

    evaluated in a group critique format and attendance for these critiquesis mandatory. Late assignments will be marked down one lettergrade for each class they are late. Submitting work withoutparticipating in critique will result in a one-letter grade drop. Notattending critique and not submitting work will result in a two-lettergrade drop. If you have a conflict with a scheduled critique date it isyour responsibility to make arrangements with me to present yourwork to the class at another time. If you miss a class it is yourresponsibility to contact me before the next class in order to pick upany assignments you may have missed.

    Since much of the discussion of work in this class is conducted incritique, class participation is mandatory and will be taken intoconsideration for grading.
