Reliable and safe – with WAGO The main objective of the power genera-tion and distribution industry is to ensure the reliable and safe supply of power. In an era of increasing global competition, the financial benefits that components bring to a project dramatically impact decision-making. WAGO components provide the greatest degrees of safety and quality paired with industry-leading reli-ability. This creates a compelling argument that will win over even the most discerning decision-makers.

Our planet‘s resources are finite and climate change can no longer be denied. These facts pose a great challenge to any

Maximum output, minimum spacePhotovoltaic connection boxes play an important role in solar-energy produc-tion systems. They house electrical con-nections between modules, and protect the cells against damage.

The most critical component of PV con-nection boxes is the connection technol-ogy that guarantees secure contact between the strings and PV connection lines. Connection technology is largely responsible for both system efficiency and an extended life span.

* PV = photovoltaic

Not surprisingly, PV systems are prone to dramatic temperature and humidity fluctuations triggered by harsh outdoor environments. In spite of this, PV systems are expected to have an extended service life. WAGO connection modules have been doing justice to these requirements for many years. In addition to a secure string connection, they are beneficial thanks to their:

•especially flat design•wide temperature range from

- 60°C to +105°C(for a short time also up to 200°C)

•modular construction•extensive circuit board module pro-

DC isolators, activation boxes and distributor boxes perform critical func-tions between the PV modules and the inverters:

•Isolation equipment•PV collection box•Reliable connection between modules

and invertersThe versatile WAGO rail-mounted termi-nal block system offers many possibilities for connecting the PV lines reliably and permanently. Intelligent jumper systems simplify the interconnection of the PV lines. Disconnect and fuse terminal blocks with high voltage resistance securely isolate PV generators from inverters. Custom-engineered solutions, such as diode boxes (up to 1,000 VDC), complete the system.

The range of rail-mounted terminal blocks – simply brilliant With just one rail-mounted terminal block system, WAGO fulfills virtually all industrial, Ex application and building installation needs. Thanks to CAGE CLAMP® S technology, TOPJOB® S DIN-rail mount terminal blocks are the industry’s most compact. This means more wiring space and smaller switch cabinets and junction boxes.

•CAGE CLAMP® S connection for allconductor types – simply push in solidand fine-stranded, ferruled conductors

•Extremely compact design for morewiring space or smaller switch cabi-nets/terminal boxes

•Robust, spring-loaded jumper systemfor full nominal current

•Highly reliable terminations•Fast and economical marking system•Ex approvals are standard•POWER CAGE CLAMP rail-mounted

terminal blocks with spring clamp tech-nology are suited for conductors up to95 mm² (AWG 4/0).

•For applications with higher voltage re-quirements up to 1500 VDC, with thenew TOPJOB® S 2006 Series discon-nect terminal block, we offer preciselythe right solution!

When unreliable would be inexcusableTemperature fluctuations, vibrations and environmental aggressors mean screw connections must be checked and adjusted frequently. This is where CAGE CLAMP® S excels. In addition to minimiz-ing wiring and installation times, all terminations are permanently gas-tight, maintenance-free and vibration-resistant.

At the heart of every PV system lies a power inverter. The connection technol-ogy of WAGO PCB terminal blocks, connectors, as well as feedthrough and rail-mounted terminal blocks, reliably interfaces a power inverter’s delicate electronics with the harsh outside world.

The 285 Series POWER CAGE CLAMP terminal blocks, with a connection range of 35 to 95 mm² (AWG 32–4/0) are ideal when focusing on greater outputs, such as central inverters.

WAGO‘s extensive PCB terminal block system includes cross-sectional areas up to 16 mm² (6 AWG) and improves power inverter performance though:

•User-friendly designs of the 2176and 745 Series PCB terminal blocks. Thanks to the lever of the 2716 Series, several clamping points can be heldopen at once, dramatically simplifyingmulti-conductor terminations (up to1000 V/76 A).

•828 Series feedthrough terminalblocks fulfill special requirements.Easy to handle, simple to use, thesecomponents streamline projects for theend customer.

•High-current connectors in the 831Series are designed for rated currentsup to 41 A. Connects conductors from0.5 to 10 mm² (AWG 20-8).

Exact measurement values for the control centerSystem monitoring requires line current or total current measurement. WAGO‘s Cur-rent Sensor distinguishes itself through its high EMC immunity. It measures currents reliably up to 140 A and makes mea-surement values available via MODBUS standard protocol to superior controls, visualizations or control centers.

•Up to 32 sensors can be sequen-tially connected per RS-485 line andexpanded to a maximum bus cablelength of 1,200 m.

•With a measurement precision of 0.5%of the end value, the measurementrange of 0–80 A and 0–140 A (DC)ensures reliable phase monitoring.

•Ambient temperatures from -20°C to+70°C are no problem.

Renewable Energy Production Plants

Control and monitoring via WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM per Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG)

A large challenge for the network inte-gration of renewable power producers is maintaining of reliable voltage quality in the distribution network.

According to the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), all power plants with a capacity of more than 100 kW must have a device for remote-controlled reduction of the feed-in power. This provision should ensure that while the greatest possible quantity is drawn by network operators from EEG and CHP* systems, network safety is also guaranteed.

Network monitoring is handled by a network control system. Power regula-tion typically occurs by reductions in four steps: 90%, 60%, 30%, and 0%. The compact WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM is ideal for this application. Minimally equipped with four digital outputs, this results in a very small, economical unit for power reduction. The flexible I/O system additionally offers the possibility of gradually balancing the power via analog outputs.

Thanks to WAGO’s intelligent 750 au-tomation system, in addition to power reduction, decentralized power supply systems can be monitored.

Our Solution: •WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM,

750-872 PLC for telecontrol technology •Compact and flexible system•Expands for exact power control via

optional analog output cards•Integrated IEC protocols•Economical solution

1000V Potential Block for Photovoltaic SystemsTOPJOB® S Rail-Mounted Terminal Blocks up to 1000V in Generator Connection Boxes

Task: Generator connection and line collec-tor boxes require rail-mounted terminal blocks rated at 1,000 VDC.

Due to their clearances and creepage distances, WAGO’s TOPJOB® S rail-mounted terminal blocks (2006, 2010, and 2016 Series) are rated at 800 V, allowing operation in pollution degree 3 environments.

The clearances and creepage distances refer to: 1. Potential to potential 12. Potential to carrier rail 2.

Page 19: Photovoltaic - WAGO · Connection Technology for Photovoltaic Modules Not surprisingly, PV systems are prone ... - PROFIBUS, PROFINET, ETHERNET etc. - Telecontrol protocols IEC 60870,

19

1000V Potential Block for Photovoltaic SystemsTOPJOB® S Rail-Mounted Terminal Blocks up to 1000V in Generator Connection Boxes

Requirements for 1,000 V:By commoning individual terminal blocks, it is possible to achieve a com-mon potential 3.

This eliminates potential-to-potential clearances and creepage distances.

The remaining clearances and creepage distances from potential to carrier rail are sufficient for 1,000 V applications.

Blocks with differing potentials (+, –) mounted next to each other on a car-rier rail are separated by an end stop that is at least 6mm wide.
