In September 1963, the first crew of volunteers
gathered at the Melwood site on Dower House Road
in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Their vision was to
attempt something that many people did not believe
was possible. The volunteers, aided by two skilled
government horticulturalists, taught young adults
with differing abilities to grow plants. They learned
a useful skill and were able to gain employment.
Encouraged by the positive attitude, dependability
and dedication of the volunteers and trainees, in
June 1964, their sponsors at The ARC of Prince
Georges County dedicated the Melwood Agricultural
Training Center at the Dower House site, still our
headquarters today.
In 1966, Melwood hired its first full-time director,
Earl Copus, a Peace Corps worker with a degree
in Forestry. By 1969, Mr. Copus and Melwood had
enrollments of 25 young men and the first young
women trainees with differing abilities. More
importantly, Melwood had a vision of having 100
enrolled participants in the future. Today, Melwood
employs over 760 people with differing abilities.
Melwood and its community were visionaries: always
seeing the best in people with differing abilities,
engaging the community to be a part of the mission
and the dream, and knowing when and how to find
the leadership and support to move to the next level.
In fiscal year 2014, the Melwood Board of Directors
and senior leadership set strategic priorities for the
organization and the Board to keep Melwoods vision
and dream alive creating more opportunities that
empower people with differing abilities to become
their best selves. We are actively exploring new and
emerging lines of business and diverse populations
that could benefit from our history, our expertise
and our jobs, including wounded warriors and youth
transitioning from school to work.
I am honored to serve as the Melwood Board Chair
and want to extend the appreciation of the Board of
Directors to all of the Board members and volunteers
who have served over the years to support Melwood.
Your time, resources, expertise and dedication were
so critical to bringing the vision of our founders to life.
I know I speak for all Board members when I make
the commitment to you and this community that we
will continue to bring our best to Melwood and our
service every day so that the next 50 years will make
you proud.

Planting the Seeds of Growth
Cari DeSantis
President and CEO, Melwood
Melwood was founded on three key principles
that have inspired a community for the past five
decades: innovation, inclusion and social good.
Were deeply rooted in these principles, on which
we built a vibrant organization over the years, and
we took great care in preserving that legacy as
we established the blueprint for the future of the
organization. That blueprint calls for significant
expansion of our services and employment
opportunities for people with differing abilities over
the next few years. In Fiscal Year 2014, we laid the
groundwork and planted the seeds of growth for a
very exciting future.
Weve modernized our infrastructure, enhanced
service programming, expanded our capabilities,
and created new initiatives to serve more people in
new and different ways. More jobs, more services,
more opportunities for people with differing abilities
to work and play in their communities, that is what
Melwood is all about. As we continue to innovate,
let us share a commitment to build on our founders
vision of a world where people with differing
abilities are fully included in the workforce and
the community.
I am deeply grateful to you, the Melwood
friends, family, customers and staff, who have
made it possible for Melwood to surpass 50 years
of service and to continue to grow our capacity
to empower thousands of people with differing
abilities. Please take a few moments to look through
this report. In here you will find great inspiration
from the many Melwood people at work and at play.
Thank you!

to empower people with differing abilities to create full

This summer, President Barack Obama visited the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban

Cultivating People through Integrated Services
Melwoods new initiatives allowed us the opportunity to engage more people with differing abilities.
In 2014, we focused our efforts
on creating new program initiatives,
expanding existing services and,
ultimately, developing opportunities
for job growth. We reorganized our
Vocational Support Services division,
streamlining processes as well as
enhancing the resources provided;
helping us empower even more
employees through job training and
other supportive initiatives. We planted
the seeds for an innovative program
designed to provide electronics
recycling and refurbishment services
for local communities and large
corporations across the United States.
Through our federal contracts, we are
the second largest producing non-profit
organization in the U.S. AbilityOne East
Region based on sales. From a national
perspective Melwood is the eighth
largest producing non-profit for services
and the ninth largest producing non-profit
when combining products and services.

Growing an Inclusive Workforce
To accomplish our mission, Melwood operates as a contractor providing a range of services to organizations including the federal government, state and local governments, and the private sector.
Melwoods founders planted the seeds
to build an organization that would train
people with differing abilities to learn
good work habits, gain specific job skills
and earn self-generated income. The first
successes came in horticulture. Melwood
trainees cultivated plants and sold them
at work sites around the Washington D.C.
area. That work led to grounds keeping
and landscaping contracts, where
Melwood crews consistently delivered
good, dependable work. Melwood
continued to expand its services to
offer more opportunities to people with
differing abilities. Today, Melwood is one
of the largest employers of people with
differing abilities in the state of Maryland.
More than 80 percent of our employees
with differing abilities earn more than
minimum wage and most have benefits.
