Welcome to the Grand Rapids Symphony’s D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops. Thank you for joining the orchestra for the 21st year of our summer concert series at Cannonsburg Ski Area. SpartanNash and the Symphony are delighted to continue sharing great musical moments with our Picnic Pops patrons. Summertime music begins with the band “Super Diamond” on July 9 & 10. Perennial favorite “Classical Fireworks” on July 16 & 17 will be conducted by the Symphony’s newly appointed Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt. “Piano Men” will be with us on July 23 & 24 featuring Billy Joel and Elton John’s greatest hits. “Five for Fighting” featuring singer-songwriter John Ondrasik joins our Symphony on July 30 & 31 performing his #1 Billboard hit Superman, The Riddle and 100 Years, and many more in a concert you won’t want to miss. Special appreciation goes to D&W Fresh Market and SpartanNash for the partnership that makes enriching orchestra programs accessible for 25,000 patrons each summer. Recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras, the Grand Rapids Symphony celebrates its 85th anniversary this season, a tribute to an enduring partnership with the West Michigan community that has embraced it since the orchestra’s founding in 1930. The 2014-15 Season marks the conclusion of David Lockington’s tenure as Music Director, a record 16 years in the role. He will become the first Music Director Laureate in the Symphony’s history as the organization embarks on a search for a new music director. The Grand Rapids Symphony presents more than 400 performances each year, touching the lives of some 170,000. Nearly half of those who benefit are students, senior citizens and people with disabilities, reached through extensive education and community service programs. Nine concert series are presented with performances designed to capture the imagination of young children and adults alike, featuring a wide range of music and performance styles. These series include the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical, Fox Motors Pops, Nestlé Gerber SymphonicBoom, Porter Hills Coffee Classics, Crowe Horwath Great Eras, Sacred Dimensions, PNC Lollipops, DTE Energy Foundation Family and the D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops series. In January 2015, the Symphony appointed Bob Bernhardt as its new Principal Pops Conductor. In 2013, the Symphony reached new and diverse audiences with the creation of MySymphony360, a membership program for young professionals. That same year, a $40 million endowment campaign was launched with a $20 million pledge by Richard and Helen DeVos. The gift represents one of the largest made to an American orchestra’s endowment fund. The Symphony’s 12th CD recording was released internationally in 2011 on the Nimbus Alliance label, featuring three works by Philip Sawyers. Other highlights include a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Classical Crossover Album” in 2007 for the Invention & Alchemy DVD and CD, featuring “Hip Harpist” Deborah Henson-Conant, and the Symphony’s Carnegie Hall debut to a full house in 2005. As part of its inclusion initiatives, the Symphony presents the annual “Symphony with Soul” community collaboration. The concert features the Grand Rapids Symphony Community Chorus and connects cultures through the shared language of music. Concert proceeds help support the “Mosaic Scholarship Fund,” created in 2007 through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Scholarships are awarded annually to African-American and Hispanic students, providing instrumental training and mentorship by Symphony musicians. The Grand Rapids Symphony has a long history of commitment to youth education and music participation. This season marks the 54th anniversary of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony and Classical Orchestra, presented by Meijer. In 2008, the organization established the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses. For more than 25 years, musician ensembles have performed in West Michigan schools; this year the Artist-In-Residence program partners with 44 schools, reaching into 15 counties and touching the lives of more than 17,000 Kindergarten through sixth-graders. Fifth-Grade Concerts have been presented since 1944, and annually they provide a live symphonic concert experience for more than 15,000 fifth-graders. The Symphony also sponsors the Grand Rapids Bach Festival since 2013, a 140-member Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, which celebrates its 53rd season this year, and provides the orchestra for performances by Opera Grand Rapids and the Grand Rapids Ballet Company. The orchestra is heard throughout West Michigan through broadcasts on NPR affiliate Blue Lake Public Radio.

LiveArts Action. Passion. Imagination.

LiveArts April 24, 2015

We all have a story to tell, and many of us long to share and express that story through the arts. The mission of an arts organization is to nurture, inspire and empower its community to express that voice. Last April, the performing arts organizations came together for one night at the Van Andel Arena to celebrate this spirit of collaboration and celebrate the artist inside of all of us. The Grand Rapids Symphony, Grand Rapids Ballet, Opera Grand Rapids and Broadway Grand Rapids, along with their affiliate programs, presented LiveArts—an epic performing arts event never before witnessed in West Michigan to an audience of more than 7,000. As part of the 85th season celebration, LiveArts raised $1.2 million, which will support the Grand Rapids Symphony’s education programs. With immersive sound, innovative visuals and creative storytelling, LiveArts established West Michigan as a leading cultural center. Over 1,500 performers took the Van Andel stage, 1,286 of whom were youth participants from 21 local schools

representing six school districts. These talented performers of all ages brought music both classic and contemporary to life.

Three high definition screens provided the audience with an up-close look at the performers and brilliant visuals,

including the 160-foot-long Grand Wave that was specifically designed for LiveArts. Highlights from the program included “The Swan” from Carnival of the Animals, “Vissi D’Arte” from Tosca,

selections from Phantom of the Opera and Carmina Burana, the Finale from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony,

and the world premiere of “I Will Rise,” a moving choral piece composed by the Grand Rapids Youth Chorus director Sean Ivory.

SUPER DIAMOND San Francisco’s Super Diamond has become one of the most popular live shows at major nightclubs, theaters, ballrooms and public events throughout the United States. Super Diamond’s success in America is unprecedented for a tribute band. With a nod from Neil (the man himself), Super Diamond has been embraced by the long time Neil Diamond fan-base and also found huge popularity in the hip rock clubs of America. Super Diamond front man “The Surreal Neil,” Randy Cordeiro, astonishes audiences with his live interpretation of the “real Neil.” Randy formed Super Diamond with founding members Matt Tidmarsh (bass guitar), Rama Kolesnikow (keyboards), and his childhood friend James Terris (keyboards) and soon after attracted the stellar talents of Chris Collins (guitar) and Vince Littleton (drums). For over a decade, the band has consistently performed sell-out shows at venues such as Irving Plaza in New York, 930 Club in Washington D.C., Bimbo’s in San Francisco, and House of Blues venues in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland and Dallas, among others. Super Diamond has also appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, CNN, Fox News, and VH1, and have been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, Spin and The New York Times. Super Diamond’s dream came true when Neil Diamond joined them on stage for a surprise appearance at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Neil Diamond also praised the band when questioned about the success of Super Diamond by Katie Couric and Larry King on national television, and joined Super Diamond on stage a second time at the premiere party for Saving Silverman. With a dedication to performing a dazzling, rockin’ show and a reputation as one of the best live bands in the country, Super Diamond continuously draws full-capacity crowds and has a loyal, dedicated and ever-expanding fan base that bridges generations.

SING OUT, AMERICA!

Oh beautiful for spacious skies for amber waves of grainFor purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain,America, America, God shed his grace on theeAnd crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining sea.

My country ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride,From ev’ry mountain-side, let freedom ring.

You’re a grand old flag, you’re a high flying flagAnd forever in peace may you wave. You’re the emblem of the land I love,The home of the free and the brave.Ev’ry heart beats true under red, white, and blueWhere there’s never a boast or brag. But should old acquaintance be forgotKeep your eye on the grand old flag.

Oh I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Yankee Doodle Doo or die.A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam, born on the Fourth of July.I’ve got a Yankee Doodle sweet-heart, she’s my Yankee Doodle joy.Oh Yankee Doodle came to down a-riding on a pony.I am a Yankee Doodle boy.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored. He has loosed the faithful lightning of his terrible swift sword,His truth is marching on.Glory, glory hallelujah, Glory, glory hallelujah, Glory, glory hallelujah,His truth is marching on.

God bless America, land that I love.Stand beside her and guide her, thru’ the night with a light from above. From the mountains to the prairies to the ocean white with foam.God bless America, my home sweet home.God bless America, my home sweet home.

JIM WITTER Whether it be his country music, contemporary Christian,

or the music of Billy Joel and Elton John, Jim’s versatility as an artist has allowed him the opportunity to reach out and share his music and his infectious personality with audiences of all ages across Canada and the United States. His unique approach and comfortable rapport makes each member of his audience feel as though they are a part of a private concert in the comfort of their own living room. This, along with his rich, powerful voice and ease of manner at the piano, make him a favorite with theatre goers everywhere.

Jim’s music and songwriting have been recognized on both sides of the border, earning him multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards, and most recently the Dove Awards in Nashville, where Jim’s album Forgiveness was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year. “Songwriting has always been a real love of mine,” says Jim. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with so many incredible song-writers over the past years, like Steve Wariner for instance. Not only have the collaborations produced songs that I am very proud of, but I have gained an invaluable education and created lifelong friendships along the way.”

A few years ago, Jim came up with the concept for the show “The Piano Men”; a musical journey through the 70’s featuring the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. “I was always a big fan of acoustic music-especially the folk of the ‘70s: James Taylor, Harry Chapin,” he reveals, “but my real mentors were Billy Joel and Elton John.” This multi-media rock musical has turned out to be a hit, receiving rave reviews from music critics all across North America and even overseas in Dubai, England and Scotland.

JOHN ONDRASIK Singer/songwriter John Ondrasik began his musical journey at three-years old. He exploded onto the music scene with the release of “Superman” in 2000 on America Town. With inspiration plus an intense work ethic, Ondrasik had become an overnight sensation in only 20 years. “Superman” continued to embed itself in the nation’s consciousness with the events of 9/11, as Ondrasik joined other superstar musicians for the fundraiser, “The Concert for New York,” a 2001 event dedicated to first responders affected by the events of September 11th. Fast-forward three years with Ondrasik still searching for that second #1 Billboard hit. Recording in his studio, an 8’ x 4’ closet, and working on his third album, The Battle for Everything, turns out he was onto something: another #1 Billboard hit, the now-standard “100 Years”. Since, Ondrasik has ranged well beyond work in the studio to the world beyond. Ondrasik has compiled five albums to give away to United States troops, with over a million distributed containing hit songs and bits from superstar musicians and comedians, in addition to Five for Fighting music. Five for Fighting’s sixth album, Bookmarks, marks both a return to an earlier time as well as a new musical palette for Ondrasik. Once again, Ondrasik’s music contains timely cultural introspection as well as an honest look into that which is us. Another major philanthropic contribution came in the spring of 2007 when Ondrasik broke new ground by creating a video charity website — the first of its kind. Through the site, over a quarter of a million dollars was raised for Augie’s Quest, Autism Speaks, Fisher House Foundation, Save the Children, and Operation Homefront. He’s also lectured at a TEDx event, spoken at colleges and in other motivational settings and still spends time at the family business, Precision Wire Products.

BE MOVED BY THE MUSIC!

Symphony volunteers help bring the Symphony to our community during the Main Season, at Education Program concerts and at our D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops concerts. Opportunities are also available to volunteer in the office and at special events. We welcome partnerships with corporate employee volunteer programs.

If you care about contributing to the cultural life of our community, we would like to meet you. No experience is necessary and we provide all training. All ages welcome — children age 13 to 15 may volunteer if accompanied by an adult. We happily provide student service learning documentation.

Symphony volunteers enjoy STAR Rewards including $5 concert vouchers (a substantial savings on ticket prices), an annual appreciation event, peer and staff recognition in Symphony and volunteer program communications, and other perks.

Our promise to volunteers . . . to provide the support and guidance needed to make every volunteer experience enjoyable and rewarding.

Let us know you are interested by completing our Volunteer Registration Form found at www.grsymphony.org/volunteer.

Or contact Nancy Hopkins, Volunteer Services Coordinator at [email protected] or 616.454.9451 x149.
