Governor Mike Lowry Mike Lowry, Democrat, is the 20th governor of the State of Washing

ton. He was born in 1939 in St. John, Washington, graduating from Endicott High School, 1957, and Washington State University, 1962.

In 1969, Lowry became staff director of the state Senate Ways & Means Committee. In 1974-75, he was public affairs director for Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. In 1975, Lowry was elected to the King County Council, and became chairman in 1977. In 1978, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Washington's 7th Congressional District; he was re-elected four times, serving a total of 10 years in Congress.

After leaving Congress in 1988, Mike Lowry continued working in two areas close to his heart: education and the environment. In 1989-92, he taught government and government service at Seattle University's Institute for Public Service, sharing his wealth of experience. He also joined forces with former governor and U.s. Senator Dan Evans to chair the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition, dedicated to purchasing and preserving wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities in Washington state; they successfully secured more than $113 million as part of a $450 million proposal to permanently protect Washington's most precious and natural areas.

Lowry is the first governor in Washington's history to succeed a governor of the same party. He responded to voters' desire for change by enlisting hundreds of citizen volunteers of diverse backgrounds to craft recommendations on a vision and direction for the state of Washington, and immediately upon taking office issued an executive order on ethics in government. Lowry has made health care reform and balancing the state budget his top priorities for the 1993 legislative session.

Mike Lowry and his wife, Mary, have one daughter, Diane, who is a college freshman.
