ON a scorching Sundaythis month about 2500city slicker spectators

and a few of their rural coun-terparts trundled out to theDoomben Racecourse to takein what’s becoming anincreasingly glamorous dayout at the polo. The final of the JeepAustralian Open Polo is not atournament taken lightly bythe players, though, whomade their way to Brisbanefrom Scone, Adelaide, GoldCoast, Beaudesert, Sydneyand even New Zealand toplay for the covetedAustralian Open Cup in a 12-goal and 6-goal final. The 6-goal tournament final,put on by South EastQueensland, played betweenMount Mort’s team of LanceShepherd, James Shepherd,Eustie Hill and George Hill,and Coast-to-Coast’s NeilGilmore, Bingham Fitz-Henry, Peter Handbury andWarwick Steen, was agruelling game of speed andprecision. But in a family affair, theMount Mort team, made up ofa father and son, and twobrothers, came out convinc-ing victors with the final scoreof 8 goals to 4. Then came the traditionalstomping of the divotsnovelty affair, which hadthrongs of people streamingonto the pitch from bothsides of the field to leave theirhigh-heeled mark on the day.
