Vol 38 Issue 4 Jackson, Michigan August, 2018

From the President

Hello Everyone!

Monday, August 27th is our last

meeting of the Guilds fiscal year,

September, 2017–August, 2018.

Can you believe it? This year went

by pretty quick!!! I have to say I

have had fun, fun, fun!!!

I could take up the entire space of this newsletter

sharing all of the great experiences I have had as the

President of our Guild this year, but I don’t think I

need to. I bet you were right there, front and center,

enjoying everything too!

Just think; Where can we go for $35.00 a year and be

involved, have camaraderie with so many, enjoy a

snack or two or three, watch and learn, teach, show

and share, plus win a prize too boot?? The Pieces

and Patches Quilt Guild. That’s where!! We are

very fortunate, that’s for sure.

This year has been a few firsts for me. Pushing past

the shyness and learning the innies and outies of

Robert’s Rules of Order (thank you Marj Hobe), the

Quilt Retreat and the Quilt Challenge. Getting

outside one’s comfort zones is always tough. With

your kindness, understanding and support, I have

been able to, and I thank you!!!

Starting September 24th, your new President is Janet

Rochefort. She is vivacious, witty, a shaker and a

mover, and artistic. As you did this past year with

me, believe in her, assist her, lend your ideas and

your passion. Let’s welcome Jan on her upcoming

year. Welcome Jan! 🎉

As the outgoing President, I’ll be supporting Jan,

attending the Executive Board Meetings supporting

you, the Guild members.

Farewell as your President and Thank you, Thank

you and Thank you a million times over!! ❤️

Cheri Pickett

~President

From the Community

Outreach Director

As you know, we are working with the Ella Sharp

Museum, and the Deb Hyde Fiber Art Exhibit. Her

quilts are gorgeous, and if you get the chance to see

her exhibit, you must go. And then mention it to

your friends, family and neighbors; let's help get the

word out.

I have a small committee assembled, and we've met

to discuss our contribution during the Fall Harvest

on September 30th.

We are going to have stations set up in the exhibit

area, that will show how quilting has progressed over

the years, from making cardboard templates and

using scissors, to our premade templates, and rotary

cutters.

We also talked about putting together a quilted block

from start to finish, showing the cutting, piecing,

sandwiching, quilting and binding processes.

Attached to their wall, are the pieces of textured

fabrics that we donated, where visitors can feel the

different textures.

If you have any ideas, old quilting items to donate,

and/or would like to join our group, please contact

me. Thank you, and keep on quilting!

President’s Block

One of the guild’s best traditions is to say “thank

you” to the outgoing President for serving the guild

as the President for the current year. And don’t

forget that one serves as an officer for multiple years

prior to becoming President! The way we say thanks

is to make a quilt block in accordance with the

President’s wishes. Making a block is optional, but

if you are inspired to follow this tradition, here is

what Cheri would like and the necessary

instructions. Blocks are presented to the President at

the September guild meeting.

9 ½” x 9 ½” Unfinished Block

Only two colors of cotton fabric are needed:

White or White on White and YOUR favorite color.

White is used for the star and Your favorite color is

used for the ribbon.

Cut:

White-cut four 3 7/8” squares and one 3 1/2 “ square

Color-cut four 3 7/8” squares

Sew:

Place a 3 7/8” square and color 3 7/8” square right

sides together. Draw a line diagonally from corner to

corner on the wrong side of the color fabric. Sew a

¼” on each side of the line. Cut the square in half

along the drawn line, you now have ½ square

triangles. Or use your favorite technique to make a

½ square triangle. You will end up with eight

squares that are two colors. The 3 ½” white block is

the center square.

Arrange the half square triangles and the 3 ½” white

square according to the diagram. Please sign your

name in the center square with black pigma pen or

black fabric pen. ❑

Thank You

Dear Guild Members,

I would like to thank each and every one on the Quilt

Show Committee and Guild members for the

exceptional work that you did for the 2018 Quilt

Show.

Some of the exceptional things that we did are:

• Together, we made a Raffle Quilt that Cheri

Pickett, AQS Appraiser, valued at over

$3,000 and generated sales of $5,407.00.

• Over 500 guests visited our Quilt Show.

• The Fat Quarter Café fed us well, raising

$1463.50.

• “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,”

was proven by the Guild’s generous

donations. When we resold the donations,

the Guild raised $2,242.00.

• Successful bidding on the Silent Auction

donations brought in another $1917.00.

• Vendors were calling us to be at our show.

• And best of all, the Guild received a check

for $12,382.13 plus one shiny copper penny!

Thank you again to those of you who contributed to

the gift card. It was unexpected and an amazing gift.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you as co-

chairman and then chairman of the Quilt Show.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Hewett

WHO ARE YOU?

And why do I care?

With over one-hundred seventy-five Pieces and

Patches Quilt Guild members, it is difficult to know

everyone. But I certainly would like to!

By stating your name during "Show and Share" and

other opportunities, it helps us put a face and name

with a person/project/style. If we hear your name and

see your project, we can begin to see your artistic

style and, hopefully, remember who you are.

So, when I shout out "who are you", I'm not trying to

be rude. I'm hoping we may all make a connection

with our like minded artistic quilters. You are each

important to me. So, WHO ARE YOU?

Quilt Labels

Do you put a Label on your Quilts?

This question came up at one of the groups that I

quilt with, and most of us said “Yes!” For those that

have and have not used labels, here are some

questions about that:

1. Why include a label?

2. What do you include on your label?

3. How do you attach the label?

4. Where do you put the label?

5. What does your label look like?

Well, as most of us have heard before, there are no

quilt police, however let’s consider some of these

questions.

1. A label can give information about a quilt to

help identify the creator and other

information if the quilter is not available (i.e.

the quilt is lost).

2. A label can be as simple as the name of the

person who made the quilt and the date it was

made. It can also include where it was made,

who it was made for and why. I like to name

each quilt, but you could also give the name

of the pattern or designer.

3. Just as there are several ways to quilt, there

are several ways to attach a quilt label. You

can slip stitch it to the quilt, but you could

also applique it, or attach it before quilting in

order to quilt through the label.

4. Most quilters attach the label to the back

corner of the quilt, however you could also

include it on the front of your quilt as the

center of one of the blocks.

5. Labels can be as simple as a piece of muslin

with the information penned with a

permanent, fade-resistant fabric pen. You can

also use a color printer or embroidery to

create a label. Try using an orphan block or

some of the leftover fabric to add color to

your label.

Included are a couple of examples of labels I have

made. Use your imagination, be creative and have

fun! Whatever you choose as your label, try not to

think of it as a chore, but rather your signature on the

quilt. When I add my label it makes me feel that I

have completed a beautiful project, and I hope others

feel that way too.
