Why Ten Thousand Villages? Step into Ten Thousand Villages, and you are surrounded by the bright colors and many textures of exotic lands. Spices perfume the air, and strains of soulful music transport you to another place. You may think you’ve left home, until a warm voice says in the accent of the Deep South, “Welcome to Ten Thousand Villages!” and you realize you’re still in Greensboro, not the soukhs of North Africa. But you have entered a place filled with goods from many other lands. In fact, each

item in Ten Thousand Villages is handcrafted by artisans in over 35 developing countries. You will find backloomed textiles made by women in Guatemala, fine silver jewelry crafted by Tuareg men, and smooth onyx pieces from Pakistan.

How did this space filled with the best from all over the world come to its little corner of Greensboro? What you may not know upon walking through the front door, but will surely learn before you leave, is that Ten Thousand Villages exists for a greater purpose. It’s not just another shop. All of this – the music, the crafts, the volunteers – exists to support people who would otherwise suffer in poverty.Volunteers? That’s right. Ten Thousand Villages is staffed by dozens of volunteers who see their work as an answer for those in developing countries who need someone to tell their stories and pay them a fair wage for their handicrafts. Ten Thousand Villages is a non-profit organization, which means that it exists solely to fulfill this mission of

The Jeffrey Adams Dining Experience In Downtown Winston Salem

By Brian Watkins

Come experience a modern dining experience that’s classy yet affordable. Jeffrey Adams on 4th is a three-story restaurant right in the heart of Winston Salem, and is a center point for a lot of community events. With a seasonal menu that includes prime cut steak and a variety of other dinner options, Jeffrey Adams is perfect for special occasions and a no-frills outings alike. This October marks three years for the restaurant in Winston Salem.

The bottom floor of the restaurant houses the winery, and can also seat 30 people for group events. Otherwise, the two other main floors are where guests primarily sit. Each main floor has a bar where customers can enjoy drink specials Monday through Friday. The third floor has large windows that provide a nice view of 4th Street and Marshall -- particularly nice when the city

has festivals and other events going on.The restaurant is also beside the Stevens Center theater, which is home to the University of North Carolina’s school of the arts and an ongoing opera scene. It’s a nice ambiance to be around in the evenings, and makes for a convenient night on the town. One thing that makes this restaurant different is the locally sourced food. Beef and other meat is obtained from nearby suppliers, and the owners actually have their own farm where they grow their own produce. The menu varies a bit throughout the year to reflect the changing harvest. Owner Adam Andrews says that the next harvest will be soon, and will include a whole bunch of tasty veggies.

Regarding the menu in general, Adam says “You can get center cut sirloin and ribeye, but we’re not a steakhouse; you can get a lot of other things here too.”Have a look at the gallery on their website to see some of these delectable treats: everything from shrimp and seafood to chicken and vegetarian options.

Jeffrey Adams is open at 11am Monday through Sunday, with closing times varying from 9pm on Sunday and Monday to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. You can find them at 321 West 4th Street, Winston Salem.Call for more information at (336) 448-1714 or visit their website at www.jeffreyadamsws.com

Spencer tells how Bold Rock got its start: “John Washburn & Brian Shanks started bottling Bold Rock Cider in 2012. John Washburn purchased some land in Nelson County, Virginia in 1985 and could not really decide on what to do with it until he noticed how the wine and craft beer was taking off in the Rockfish Valley. So, he decided to give the cider business a try. He only needed someone to help produce the cider for him and that’s when he called Brian Shanks and asked him to meet with him about helping produce a craft cider. They met in New Zealand where Brian had been making his award winning cider. Brian has helped produce and market cider for some of the biggest cider producers in the United Kingdom and also worked with Strongbow and Woodchuck. Brian flew over to Virginia to join John and that’s how Bold Rock Cider started.”Tim: “The Less Desirables rated the Bold Rock Carolina Draft Hard Cider for a show in September with guests that are beer fans and with one that is a mead aficionado (he likes beer, too). Generally, I’m not a fan of ciders. They’re too sweet and it’s more about the fruit as compared to the alcoholic drink I’m looking for. I will, say, however, that I was pleasantly surprised and very happy to find that whilst this definitely had cider characteristics, it was very drinkable. The flavor profile was rich, not just syrupy apple juice that some ciders can taste like. Bold Rock has several varieties of hard ciders, including the Carolina and Virginia ciders. Those are made from Granny Smith apples from their respective states. There is also the Carolina Draft and Virginia Draft which is a blend of different apple varieties, again from their respective states. Another variety is a pear cider instead of apples. The Carolina Draft was quite delicious. In fact, I drank 3 of them to make sure I got the proper tasting. For not liking ciders, I sure did like this one. I rated it 3.75 out of 5.”Try it locally at: Second and Green Tavern, Stumble Stilskins, Cooper Ale House and City Beverage to name a few local places.

Why Ten Thousand Villages? (Cont. from pg 12)

alleviating poverty. This month at Ten Thousand Villages, there are new items from all over the world – unique home décor, handcrafted by people like Nguyen Thi Nguyen. Though she is 33, Nguyen looks like a teen as she sits surrounded by unfinished white ceramics. She is one of the thousands of artisans supported by Ten Thousand Villages, 65 percent of whom are women. Nguyen specializes in glazing the ceramics, and through her work she has realized her dream of educating her children. Perhaps you will think of Nguyen as you explore the store and make your choices, or perhaps you will just enjoy the beauty of what she has made. Either way, she thanks you.
