De Braga Room Number: 2208 Email: [email protected] Office hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7:45-8:20am Course Description The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental knowledge and skills in two or more dance styles, recognize choreographic processes, enhance aesthetic awareness, and make connections between dance and other subject areas. The content will include, but not limited to the following: -dance styles, skills, and techniques -movement terminology -connections between music accompaniment and movement -choreographic structures and rhythm patterns -meaning in movement -influence of time, place, and events on dance from varied cultures -critical observation and analysis -connections between dance and healthful living -connections between dance and other subject areas -dance history Skills – Behavioral Outcomes: To provide bodily experiences that explore the use of space, time and energy. To provide a variety of exercises including floor work, center and traveling combinations that enhance performance quality, muscle memory, strength, and flexibility. To apply anatomical concepts to movement efficiency focusing on alignment, articulation, and coordination. Dress Code Students are to dress out every class session, unless notified otherwise. Course DescriptionThe purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental knowledge and skills in two or more dance styles, recognize choreographic processes, enhance aesthetic awareness, and make connections between dance and other subject areas.

Dress CodeStudents are to dress out every class session, unless notified otherwise. If a student comes unprepared they are not to take class that day, and receive a 0 for the day. Students have 7 minutes to dress once the bell rings and be seated in roll call, and will be dismissed 7 minutes prior to the bell. Hair must be picked up and out of the face. No jewelry is to be worn in class, for the exception of small stud earrings.

Classroom Expectations:1. Respect Others – listen when others are talking; keep hands, feet, objects and negative

comments to yourself.2. Follow directions.3. Raise your hand to be recognized before speaking or standing up from your seat.4. Bring required materials to class every day. (No CD, MP3 or IPod players, food, electronic

devices, etc.)5. Follow the Pinecrest Preparatory Middle/ High School Code of Conduct

Effort, Attitude and ProgressDancers will be evaluated daily on the basis of task commitment and progress.  Only those who are determined and dedicated will excel in this class.  Having a positive attitude is essential to achieve success in dance. Cooperation and respect to others is expected.

Consequences for not meeting Classroom Expectations:1st Consequence – Verbal Warning2nd Consequence – Phone Call Home/E-mail3rd Consequence – Classroom Exclusion or Detention4th Consequence – Referral to Administration** When necessary the teacher may bypass consequences depending on the severity of the classroom disruption or behavior**

Grading SystemThe following constitutes the formulation of your grade:

Summative 40%Formative 30%Classwork 20% Home Learning 10%

Grading Scale:90 - 100 A80-89 B70-79 C60-69 D59 and below F

Achieve3000 Grading CriteriaStudents will complete a minimum of 2 articles per month. Each assignment is worth 10% (Home

Learning Grade)

Students will also receive 2 completion grades per quarter (9-week period). This completion grade will be worth 30% (Formative Assessment)

ParticipationIf a student is unable to participate in class due to illness or injury, he/she should bring a note from a parent or doctor. Students will not be allowed to rejoin class until a doctor’s note is provided with a statement of release.

*Students will be expected to attend at least 2 dance concerts throughout the school year.

Attendance Policy If you are absent, you must bring in a note from home in order to have the absence excused.

Make-up work will be given to ALL students, but only those students with excused absences will receive an academic grade.

I encourage students to exchange telephone numbers with their peers, so they may acquire and complete assignments when they are absent.

Students will have the opportunity to use the restroom between class period and during lunch. Restroom/Hall passes will only be issued in case of emergency.

Tardy PolicyIf a student is tardy class:

1st time-verbal warning 2nd time-Parent Contact 3rd time- Detention (held on Monday’s from 6:45am to 7:40am) 4th time- Referral to administration

Conduct Code:The teacher will keep a record of non-compliance by a student, and depending on the frequency of the behavior the students conduct grade will drop as follows:

1. A2/3 B4/5 C6/7 D8-up F

Required Daily Class Materials: One Composition book for journaling and class notes. Two black or blue ink pens Two highlighters Dance Uniform (please see Dress Code above)

Academic Dishonesty:Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic work. Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

1. Cheating – use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, or study aides2. Fabrication – falsification or invention of any information3. Assisting – helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty4. Tampering – Altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents5. Plagiarism – representing the words or ideas of another person as one’s own.
