From the Clubhouse by Danny Souza, General Manager

Dear Pine Lake Member,

The Spring Weather is starting to arrive and with it I hope that the entire membership takes advantage of all the amenities the club has to offer. It is vital that member usage stays robust throughout the entire year to keep the clubs financial responsibilities in order.

Fiscal year end 2014 was a year that brought us unplayable weather for most of the year. The summer had record rainfall and the winter was the wettest and coldest this region has seen in over 15 years. The weather had a direct influence on the member’s usage and spending habits causing an operational deficit and a cash flow opportunity.

The first quarter of last year showed great promise as we were tracking ahead of budget however Mother Nature stepped in and the remainder of the year was difficult to say the least. The Annual Membership Meeting was held on Friday March 29th and the voting members approved three motions that were brought to the floor and elected three new board members. The results are listed below:

Motion #1 – The voting members approved a 2014YE true up assessment of $500 per Golf Member and $250 per non Golf Member.

Motion # 2 – The voting members approved a 2015 YE operation assessment of $25 per month for Golf Members and $12.50 per month for non Golf Members.

Motion # 3 – The voting members approved a dues increase of $10 per Golf Member and $5 per non Golf Member for fiscal year end 2015

The voting members elected Sally Probst, Patrick Keaton and Gene Lee to serve for a three year term.

I would like to thank the entire membership for their continuous support of the club and the entire Pine Lake Staff.

See you at the club soon,

DannyDanny SouzaGeneral Manager

Tennis Tip by Robert Stephens, USPTA Pro1, Head Tennis Professional

Course Report by Richard McDanel, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

The weather roller coaster continues! The minute it warms, the rain begins preceding another cold front. This is not good for golf or growing grass. The greens aerification was delayed by 3 days in mid-March. I don’t feel like it will impact recovery time any, as the temperatures and cloudy conditions seem to be hampering that. All of the appropriate nutrients were applied to the greens prior to and during aerification. The timing of additional light applications of nutrients will correlate with an increase in growth as temperatures moderate. If too much additional nitrogen is applied at one time and conditions become optimal, excessive growth will occur resulting in slower green speeds and is also a waste of money. Mother Nature is ultimately in control.

Winter work is going well with the mulch being placed in plant beds and natural areas being the biggest task. The bunkers were inspected and sand was added as needed. Mowers are ready and golf accessories refurbished. The cart path renovation project will resume as soon as weather conditions permit - this involves dry soil conditions and a temperature of 45 degrees and rising. The placement of rip rap on the banks of the creek at the entrance is on schedule to be completed soon. All bermudagrass has been treated with a pre-emergent weed control for summer weeds.

Aerification of bermudagrass areas will begin in the near future. We need to start soon to avoid impacting tournaments and outings. This cultivation practice is implemented to create a healthier turf, resulting in better playing conditions.

The 3 new trees planted on hole #13 in memory of Randy Rummage were funded through a donation. In addition to being visually beautifying, they also will help protect the green from players attempting to use the 11th fairway as a lay up strategy when setting up their second shot. The first tree is a sugar maple, which will exhibit stunning fall color, while the others are crape myrtles providing colorful flowers from early July with recurrent bloom through September.

May great golfing and growing conditions return soon!

Slow down between points You may not be able to eliminate the anxiety and nervousness you feel before competition, but some of it can actually improve performance.

Instead you want to find ways to control and manage the stress of competition. If you tend to speed up and play fast when you are uncomfortable in a match try to remember to slow down between points. For example, you can take a few steps towards the back fence to regroup or focus on your racquet strings between points. Use this time to be aware of the match tempo and make adjustments to compete better in the match! Putting yourself in stressful situations during practice will also help you compete better in matches. You can play points/games with special rules and consequences. Also adjust your attitude when competing. Tennis is a game and it should be fun, enjoy the competitive challenge. Remember you cannot control the outcome, only your performance.

As we move into the Golf Season I wanted to send out a friendly reminder on some rules and etiquette that will help make your time at the club more enjoyable:

• Please be reminded that if you or your group has a starting time schedule but

you are not planning on using it, to either cancel on-line or call the Golf Shop who can cancel it for you, this helps us get as many

members out to play as possible.

• If you have less then four players in your group, but have a foursome signed up on the

tee sheet, please amend on-line or call the Golf Shop so that we can keep the tee sheet

current and up to date.

• Please remember to start at your scheduled time and not to earlier or later, unless the Golf Staff have been consulted.

• Please remember that it is your responsibility to keep up with the group in front of you and

not just in front of the group behind. If you are unable to keep pace with the group in front

of you and the group behind is playing faster, please let them play through.

• Please make an effort to repair your ball mark and one other on each green that you play.

• Please remember to place the rake outside of the bunker after you are done using it.

FlightScope launch Monitor

I have recently purchased a FlightScope launch monitor which is a Doppler radar that will give critical information about ball flight and club head characteristics during the impact area.

This piece of technology will be essential in helping fit clubs and give information that

will be valuable during the course of a lesson.

If you would like to schedule a fitting or a lesson

please contact me at 704-409-3165 or [email protected]
