STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

The College of Natural Resources Ambassadors raiseawareness about the College of Natural Resourceson campus and in the public. We help build a bettercollege environment for students and increaserelationships between alumni and current students.The Ambassadors aim to personalize each prospectivestudent’s experience when visiting NC State byproviding one-on-one campus tours and taking thestudents to lunch to make them feel welcome. But thewelcoming atmosphere does not stop once you get oncampus.This year, we assisted with building a shackat Shack-A-Thon, organized our first ever Fall Festival,and designed the Homecoming Float to celebrate NCState’s Homecoming weelehese events were a hugesuccess, and we look forward to doing them againnext year!

True diversity is allowing yourself to be open to difference, having an intellectualunderstanding of the importance of diversity and a true feeling of its importance.Only when the head and the heart work together can positive change take place. Inthe Community for Diversity, we work to ensure that our faculty, staff, students andalumni feel welcome.Through partnerships and collaborations with other colleges,industry, government and non-government agencies, communities, and you, wemaximize our gifts to increase diversity through dialogue, work and research.

We strive to recruit, retain and increase a more diverse class of students,while collaborating with faculty on diversity issues and facilitating programsthat highlight diversity in natural resources. Programs from this year includea partnership between GTl and SKEMA for a Cultural Exchange program,Neighborhood Ecology Corps., Environ-mentors program for high school students,a Diversity and Environmental Justice course, a session event for faculty andstaff about how to address controversial issues in this political climate, EngagingLeaders Diversity Retreat, and many more.

Accolades this year include receiving the Outstanding College Performance Awardfor the sixth year in a row.The award recognizes first year students of color witha 3.2 GPA or higher at the end of the fall semester. Students were honored at theMulticultural Student Affairs Freshmen Honors Convocation. Our class was the onlyone with 100 percent recognition, an honor we’ve received for three years in a row,with everyone receiving a 3.5 GPA or higher.

The International Society ofTropical Foresters (ISTF) is a student-run organization dedicatedto enhancing the international dimension of forestry and natural resources at NC State, withan emphasis on tropical issues.The club supports not only international programs in theCollege of Natural Resources, but also the personal and professional development of all ISTFmembers. Members help raise funds for activities by selling t-shirts, tote bags and coffee inthe lobbies of Biltmore and Jordan Hall. Our activities include regular meetings with invitedspeakers and organizing symposiums or field trips.This year, we organized a trip to the23rd Annual ISTF Conference at theYale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.Theconference focused on ”Tropical Forests in a Connected World: Collaborative Solutions for aSustainable Future”and some of our members presented on topics related to tropical forestsfor sustainable development.

Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and RelatedSciences (MANRRS) was chartered in 1998 and is jointlysponsored by the College of Natural Resources and theCollege of Agriculture and Life Sciences. We providestudents with professional, community and personaldevelopment opportunities and strive for the inclusion,achievement and advancement of all people in theagricultural sciences. MANRRS provides a communityfor minorities in agricultural, natural resources andrelated sciences to get together, network and learn.

We are the first college chapter ofthe National WildTurkey Federation(NWTF) and have been a clubfor 11 years.We raise money forthe conservation of wild turkeysand help preserve our huntingheritage by sponsoring events thatgive youth and non-hunters theopportunity to learn more abouthunting. We host a banquet each

year where we raise money todonate to the North Carolina StateChapter NWTF. We also hosted aTurkey Hunters Care Event, wherewe raised money to buy turkeysto donate to the Raleigh RescueMission for thanksgiving.

Professional Golf Management (PGM) Club is the club affiliateof the PGA Golf Management program.Through the PGMprogram, we get hands-on experience through 16 months ofinternships. Our students have completed these internshipsall across the country and in different countries, like NewZealand.The PGM Club helps bring the program together tocreate a family atmosphere that enables us to succeed.

NC State participated in the 2016 PGA Jones Cup in Port St.Lucie, Fla., with the other 18 PGA accredited PGM programs.NC State finished third with a strong second round.

The Society of American Foresters is a professionalorganization that brings students and professionals of ForestManagement together to share new research and insights, aswell as brainstorm and improve the nation’s forests throughmanagement. As the future foresters of the country, ourstudent chapter seeks to improve our understanding of theprofession while having fun and building connections. Ourannual events include our Wilderness Expedition and tripto the SAF National Convention, APSAF Meeting, Arbor Day,and Stream Clean-Up.

The Student Association for Fire Ecology(SAFE) is an organization which promotesfire ecology though prescribed fireimplementation, public outreach, educationand professional development.This year,we assisted in organizing a prescribed fireon the Schenck Forest during the Spring2016 semester to promote fire ecologyawareness and enhance student training.

The Sport Management Club is for Sport Management majors within theCollege of Natural Resources.We offer networking, host various speakersfrom the sport industry, and discuss current events in the sport world. Wealso host Pack Play 180, an after-school event at Bugg Elementary, thatpromotes good sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles for kids ages 6-12.Each year the Sport Management Club travels to the SPEIA BasketballAnalytics Summit, hosted by UNC-Chapel Hill.The event shares the latestresearch in basketball analytics from leading experts, including KenPomeroy, professionals from the NBA, and more!

TAPPI is an organization that helps Paper Science andEngineering students improve their knowledge andprofessional development skills by connecting educationto the paper industry. TAPPl helps sponsor events andtrips for students to network with industry professionalsand other students, as well as give back to the communityand profession through volunteering. Members (32)attended theTAPPl Student Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio.Students were given the opportunity to collaborate withstudents from other universities.They also gained valuableinsight to help facilitate professional advancement andwere able to interview with industry professionals forinternships and full-time employment.

The NC State Work Crew is comprised of students who receive scholarships,funded through the College of Natural Resources, to enhance the college’sforests throughout the state.The forests that receive the most work are theCarl Alwin Schenck Forest in Raleigh and the G.W. Hill Demonstration Forestin Bahama.We conduct many different forest management techniques, suchas: prescribed fire, herbicide treatment, bull dozing, trail clearing, wildlifemanagement, timber marking, timber sale, and much more.

Xi Sigma Pi is the only national scholastichonor society that recognizes achievement inforestry and environmental resources education.The society was founded at the University ofWashington in 1908.The Mu Chapter at NC Statewas added in 1940 as the first chapter in theSouthern Region of the United States.There areonly 11 chapters in the United States older thanour chapter. Membership is by invitation only.

The objectives of the society are to secureand maintain a high standard of scholarshipin natural resources education, to work for theimprovement of natural resources professions,and to promote a fraternal spirit among thoseengaged in activities related to natural resources.

Each year the society holds an annual banquetfor the induction of new members into Xi SigmaPi. Inductees and current members enjoy a socialgathering, dinner, and an induction ceremony.In April 2017 the society inducted about 40 newmembers at the annual banquet.

We’ve talked aboutdifferent types of bias — how theyemerge, how they affect women,and some strategies for pointingout and addressing these biases.We’ve discussed leadership andteam-building, communication,and work-life balance.We invitewomen from across the Universityto share their experiences and thetools and strategies they’ve foundmost useful in their careers. Wehave a great ”inter-generational”mix of participants - from graduatestudents, to newly appointedassistant professors, to fullprofessors and even our CollegeDean - which provides a broadspectrum of experiences thatensures depth in the mentoringand peer support networks. EnvironmentalEducation ClubOur club exposes K-8 students toenvironmental science in interactiveand accessible ways to fosterinterest and inspire environmentalprotection. Members createlesson plans, teach students andparticipate in outreach events. Weare both a service and professionalorganization that helps studentsearn their Environmental Educator’sCertification.

Forest Management students spend nine weeks at summer campcompleting courses in forest measurements, plant community ecology,silviculture, fire and wildlife management. Students spend time at HillDemonstration Forest, Croatan National Forest on the coast and PisgahNational Forest in the mountains. Fisheries,Wildlife and ConservationBiology students complete a 6-week summer camp at Hill Forest, thecoast of Morehead City and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

I. -‘Our North Carolina State and National Parks turned100 this year!To celebrate a century of parks, wehosted 10 events and activities throughout the fallsemester. From a birthday party on the brickyard to atrail maintenance day to an Instagram photo contest(#CenturyofParksNCState) to a screening of ThePlow that Broke the Plains to an Evening with JohnMuir with actor Lee Stetson and many more events,we sparked conversation and excitement aboutspending time in nature and the importance of ourpark system.

As the reigning champion of Shack-A-Thon for the past two years with a log cabinshack and a bamboo shack, the College of Natural Resources continued their winningstreak by thinking outside the box with a cardboard windmill-shaped shack providedby the Packaging Corporation of America. Our team raised $4,486, putting the college4th place overall, and received the ’Most Sustainable Shack’ Award.The friendlycampus-wide competition helped raise $65,000 for the Wake County Habitat forHumanity Build-A-Block campaign, which built 11 townhomes on Lake Wheeler Rd.

_.ngSport Management major Lucas Kozeniesky competed in the men’s10-meter air rifle competition and Fisheries, Wildlife andConservation Biology major Ryan Held took home the gold as the third leg of the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay at the 2016Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Both were excited to represent the USA at their Olympic debut.

The Wildlife Society (TWS) student chapters host regionalconclaves each year to provide college students with valuablehands-on training in wildlife management and conservation.Activities include field trips, field competitions, game-callingcompetitions, quiz bowl, art and photography contests, andmany opportunities for professional development.

The Southeastern Wildlife Conclave promotes networking andcooperation among students, faculty and professionals, whiledeveloping new knowledge and skills. NC State’s studentchapter finished second overall at the 2017 Conclave held atMississippi State University. Other award winners includedfirst place in Unmanipulated Photography and first place inLandscape Photography (Lucas Bobay), First place in drawing(Elisabeth Frasch), first place in Rifle (April Boggs), first placeinTurkey Calling (MarkTurner), second place in Painting (MadiMcDiarmid), third place in Field Photography and third placeinTrail Camera Photography (Moriah Boggess), and third placein Waterfowl Calling (Ryan Beeson).
