A good week fororganising andplanning -particularly formaking travel plans.Be careful withmoney.

Fate struck me down lastSaturday ... or rather I strucka fete.Itwas one of those summerdays when the clouds look likewisps of white candyfloss andeverybody has ripped off theircardis and are displaying afair old proportion of suety-:white flesh. What a day to go a visitye olde English fair on ye oldeEnglish green, Ihought tomyself. So out came my safari suitand my white cricket shoesand Iwas ready for a sessionof coconut-shying and hoop-laostalls.RU D E AWAK EN IN GIwas just about to go outwhen the phone rang. It wasBrigid."How would you like toescort a beautiful young ladyto the fair this afternoon?"she asked, with a bit morecharm than usual."Sounds a good deal," Ienthused. My new suit neededan admirer. "Where is thislovely lass?"There was a stiffled snigger, and then, "Right here, Bugsy.I'm talking about me. I'mbored stiff, so Ithought I'dgive you the chance of alifetime, and let you take meout!"Icould hardly refuse thedear girl. Many's the time

she's amused me on a dullafternoon, squabbling withValli and generally making afool of herself! So the two of us arrivedat the fete. The very first

thing we set eyes on was a rowof bawling babies, done up infrilly bonnets and flowerydrawers. A baby contest! The poor judge (the localvicar of course) didn't quiteknow what end he wassupposed to be judgilng!UNL UCKY NUMB ER S!There were raffles galore, too, with masses of prizes - huge, fruity cakes, records, vasesand the most hideous-lookinggiant teddy I'd ever seen.Yellow it was . . . looked likeI it was recovering from a nastydose of jaundIce!Now, I'm not the kind ofperson who normally winsthings, but this time I thought

I'd have a go. Ieally fancieda few new records.Trouble was, they weren'tdrawing the raffle winnersuntil the very end of theafternoon, so Ihad to spendthe time amusing my pal.And what a state shelooked. She'd been at theapple-bobbing competitionand looked like she'd justcompleted a cross-Channelswim.Simple fun for simpleminds, Ihought to myself asI paced round the greenalready imagining myself withan armful of new albums tomy name.At last it was time for themto pick the raffle winners out

of the hat - and as theycalled each number out Ichecked my crumpled tickets."Number 173 has won therecords," the vicarannounced.A startled scream camefrom somewhere in the crowdand, next minute, blushingBrigid clambered forward tocollect her prize! But it wasn't over yet."Number 289 wins the thirdprize ... "Ilooked at my ticket.Number 289! Maybe I'd got

the fruity cake! But no chance. It was thegiant-sized teddy I'd won!And did I feel an idiot sittingnext to that on the bus home!See ya next week!

NOT TEACHER'S PETDear Sally, I bave a problemthat I find very tiresome. Lastyear in school Ihad a teacherwho didn't like me at all. Idon't really know why, but Iknow he likes to favour kids. For instance, one girl in ourclass gets all top marks fromhim. But Igot "satisfactory"for gym when Iknow I'mbetter. Iused to be one of thefour fast runners in my schoolwhere' we did proper physicalexercises instead of justvolleyball three times a week.Iook ballet as well and now Itake tennis.I don't really love him andhe knows it. In class I'vestopped working for himbecause Ifeel I don't get thegrades Iearn. Ionce wroteseven long pages on sillyquestions for some story and Igot the usual "satisfactory".

"Doreen asked me if l'd liketo go out with her and thesetwo feIlas one night."There's my boyfriend,Ted," she said, "and his mateRich.""What's he like?""Ooh, he's ever so tall an'he's got lovely blond hair -y'know sort of like RobertRedford - an' he's ever sostrong ... " ."Cor! This Rich sounds likekinda guy!"no, that's Ted notRich. Rich is (snicker)shorter ... "Came the big night and Iwas ready for action.Down at the cafe 1sawDoreen and this chap who wasobviously Ted. He looked likean ad for Mr. Universe and

kept bending the forks andspoons. Before Icould say,"Where's my lad then?", thislittle dark-haired objecthurled itself at my waist, shook my right knee and said,"Hello, I'm Rich!".There haven't been manytimes in my life when I've feltlike picking up a plasticketchup holder and rammingit down somebody's T-shirt, ..but I could've done it toDoreen then. Cheerfully. We went to the cinema. Thelady in the ticket booth.Rich half-price and

when he sat down anotheryoung man came and sat onhis lap because he hadn't seenhim. We went dancing.Rich and [ smooched whilsthe mumbled sweet nothingsinto my navel. We went back to Doreen'son the bus and the busconductor pointed at Rich andtold me to keep "sonny" fromsticking his chewing gumunder the seat. .We sal and drank somecoffee and I must say Richwas very entertaining. I'venever seen a nineteen-year-old suck his big tee before. Orlimbo under the teUy.A ll in all I can honestly sayit was one of the worstexperiences Iever had.Except for the time Jamierolled his trousers up.Rich had obviously enjoyedhimself though. He asked meout again. In fact, what hesaid was, "Brigid my littlecherry blossom, I have to seeyou again - I've fallen in lovewith your mohair jumper ... "I had to turn him down ofcourse. But I sent him myjumper and I hear they'rehappy together ...

Meanwhile, In TheBathroom ...What is it about bathroomsthat brings out the best (orworstt) in people? My flat-mate disappears inthere for hours on end andsings songs abouttit-willows' and things. When she comes out shealways says, "Do you know, Ithink Ishould've been anopera singer." And Ialwayssay, "Do you know, Ithinkyou need advanced brainsurgery. "Personally, Ilways get mybest ideas in the bath. Likedrowning myself.Seriously though, Ioftenthink up brilliant ideas for afeature or a book. And there Iam, up to my rosy ear-lobes infoaming green stuff, withflannels hanging soggilyacross various parts of myanatomy just in casesomebody should burst in andcatch meunawares-and nota typewriter in sight.I've tried scrawling thingson the bathroom mirror but itall disappears when the steamgoes. What I really need is asuper-bathroom with a goldtypewriter that slides out ofthe wall and dangles in frontof my famous fingers.Or perhaps a tape recorder. So that my wondrous thoughtscould be recorded forPosterity (whoever she is).Mind you, I'm not too surethat people would appreciatehearing about how Ithinkthey should make luminoussoap so you can find it in thebath. Or how I've discoveredthat if you slide up and downin the bath while the water's

gurgling out, you can loseinches off you bottom. What do you think? ".
