HELP! Your new shoeshavefallen apart, yourzip's broken and yourhamburger's cold.Should you shout orpout? ..

RIPPED OFF!The first classic situation, which nearly all of us havebeen thru' (unfortunately!) iswhen you buy a dress that's soshoddily made, when we'veworn it maybe just once ortwice the zip busts, or theseams come apart, or the but-tons fly off, or one shoulder ishigher than the other ...Don't try to mend it your-self. Take it back' to the shopand ask for either an identicaldress (minus the faults ofeoursel) or your money back,Don't let them fob you offwith a credit note unless youreally want one. Under lawyou are legally entitled toyour money back if they can-. not offer you identical goodsin exchange, no matter whatthe shop manager claims. If hesays, "It is our policy to givecredit notes," then you say: "Itis not my policy to acceptthem." And you will be in theright.SOLED-OUT!This applies to all clothes andshoes.Shoes are a big cause ofcomplaint these days, withsoles coming apart, bucklesand straps falling off, and soon ...

Serne shoe shops willreplace faulty goods they cansee were bought intheir shops, recently without too muchbother, others won't, so hereyou must stick to your guns- even take Mum along forsupport ifyou think you migh thave a difficult time!Again. you are entitled toyour money back if they can'tgive you the shoes you wantinexchange for the pair beingreturned (and shoe shopsknow this in spite of what theymay say!)It's a good idea to keep aUreceipts for clothes for at leastsix months so you haveevidence of purchase. (Oneshop refused point blank toexchange a top that was fal-ling apart because the receiptwas lost and they said it couldhave been stolen!)

    BUSTED!Now on to make-up. And

Do you have your saywhen things go wrong? Can't say we blame you ~ _ - = - 1 I ; ; a . , .if you don't 'cos ~sometimes it's kinda ......_ ...scary to ?Orne face- ~1l1':'-' O ! : t .to-face with some "..lI!tO.v"stone-faced ...manager. It'senough to give youthat "wished I'd never.opened my mouth" and "whydoesn't the ground open upand swallow me?" feeling! But, the fact remains, thereare times when we've just gotto take a deep breath, saywhat's got to be said and stickup for ourselves ... otherwisewe'd end up bein' trodden onleft, right and centre!Of course, it'd help if weknew what our rights were, and, surprisingly enough, a lotof them are on our side! So ifyou ever find yourself inanyof the following situations(and we know from your let-ters that you dofrequently!) from now onyou'll know just how youstand ...

here, we've all had problems,F'rinstance, you've bought amascara where the brush basmaddeningly departed fromthe top after a few uses; ornail polish has' gone thick be-fore it's half used or you'veunscrewed the top and thebrush stays firmly in the jar;or a lipstick won't wind prop-erly and breaks halfwaydown! Well, don't throw itaway (and your precious cashtoo!) and buy another.Take it back and change itfor one that works. Mostchemists and beauty depart-ments are quite reasonableabout this and exchange anew item they can see isfaulty. But if they won't, writeto the manufacturer (return-ing the lipstick or whatever)and they'll willingly refund

your money. They'li be awareof the problems too and willcorrect them - we hope!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT!If you're eating out and getcold egg 'n' chips instead ofhot. or a medium-rare ham-burger instead of well done -send it back till you get whatyou asked for!Don't be cowardly about it-why should you have to payfor something which isn'twhat the menu says it shouldbe and it's your money):hey'retaking!'Course we can't covereverything you could com-plain about - that'd fill thewhole mag! But if you'reaware of your rights, arguenicely but firmly for them, and don't abuse the law bytrying to pull a fast one andexchanging something you'veworn but gone, off. (But youwouldn't do that now, wouldyou !).Then - after you stand upfor your rights, you can sitdown and enjoy 'em!

WIT'SENDDear Sally, Please help me, asI'm at my wit's end!I've been going out with myboyfriend for about twomonths, and I like him a lot.I've been told by his matethat he'll never chuck me, butI'm still very unsure aboutour relationship. You see, we'll make plansto go out and then he phonesup at the last minute andcancels our date. I wouldn'tworry if this happened onceor twice, but it's happened atleast eight times, and I getvery upset about it.. All my friends say I shouldchuck him, but when I'm withhim, I'm very happy andthings are just perfect. I findit hard to get on with boys, and I will be miserablewithout him. Please, would you tell mewhat he's playing at?ConfusedDear Confused, Itseems as ifthis boy is either taking youfor granted or testing you toseejust OOwmuchymi'll putup with before letting himkn(TWhow you feetNomatter h(TWstrong yourfeelings are towards a boy, themost important thing is not togive up your ownindividuality or to surrenderyour selfrespect becauseyou're fearful Oflosing him ifyou don't. Then, instead ofbeing his girl, you become hissLave_ at his beck and coil. The next time this boy calls

up to cancela date, 1feel yousOOuldtell him that it's thelast time you'U accept thistreatment, and that unless hehas an excusable excuse, youthink it's best that you don'tsee him for a while. Now, that's not chuckinghim, but it is letting himknow that even though youlike him, you also likeyourself.SELF-HELPDear Sally, I'm 14 and in the4th form at a girls' school. Iread Pink every weeR andthink it's a great mag. When I read some-of theletters on your page I wonderwhy the writers don't try towork out their problemsthemselves. Some look as ifthey've just been writtenwithout a thought about theproblem from the writer.I have problems abouthome, boys, etc, but I workthem out. At i4, 15 years,we're at the stage-wherewe should stop being childrenand start adulthood. This cancause problems, andeveryone has problems, notjust one person.

Whether your problem's bigor small, it's important joryou to find a solution. Dropme a line, and I'll trymyto help ...I think that some of thewriters should try and worktheir problems outthemselves. (M.aybe not the .hard ones, but some of themare so simple). Maybe theyshould talk to their friends orfamily about them.Joanne, New Zealand

Dear Joanne, There are manygirls who simply can't talk toanyone about their problems_ some don't have any dosefriends; others find it difficultto relate to their parents. Then there are stilf..otherswoo find that just writingdown their problem helpsthem to seeit _ and writingto someone like me, who theydon't kn(TWpersonaUy, is oneway of reaching out forunderstanding. It helps themto know that someone cares. No problem is small to the

person experiencing it. Andit's much better to "lei it out"to someone you trust ratherthan letting it spin round andround inside you.Granted, it's good thatyou're able to work out yourproblems _ it makes youstronger if you can. StiLl,those who can't need a bit oj ahelping hand. And in thisway, too, we can learn fromone another.Th{Jnks for writing andgiving your views. Are thereothers out there in PinkLand

who feel the same way?SO DEPRESSEDDear Sally. Please help me.I'm 16 and a few weeks ago Ifinished with my boyfriendafter going out with him forover a year. Since then I'vebeen so depressed. I feel likecommiting suicide' because, you see, I have no friends andI have to stay in most of thetime. When I do go out, or when Ibegin to like someone else, they always finish with me,and this makes me evenworse.I cry al: l the time and feel as

though there's nothing to livefor because I have no friends.I thought I must tellsomeone or I'd probably gomad. I can talk to my mum,bu t it's not the same astalking to a best friend. Please help me.Very Lonely Desperate PinkFan, YorkshireDear V.L.D.P.F., Everyonegoes thlrough both good andbad times. This seems to bethe pattern Ofmost lives. Some, 01 course, are worsethan others. As you've recently brokenup with your bOYfriend, there's bound to be a periodwhen you feel at a loss:Having a steady ieua gaveyou a sense of security.ActuaUy though, securityshould begin within you andshouldn't be something youlook for in someone or someplace. This means that if you haveconfidence in your own lifeforce, which iswithin you, then you won't be soinfluenced by outside/actorsin your life _ and you'll becontent to be a/,one if thesituation calls jor it. Ofcourse, I realise this isn'teasy, but at least you cankeep this idea in thebackground, knowing thatsituations change, just aspeople do..You feeLnow that you'd liketo meet another boy who'll gosteady with you, but itseemsthat you're looking in thewrong way. You rea llyshouldn't expect to go fromone relationship right intoanother. If you did this, you'dget used to it, and it mightend up as a habit. It's best togo through the unhappinessand to try and understandwhat went wrong. When youcan do this, you'U learn fromthis experience. Then, stop dwelling qn your

misery. Look at your goodpoints and try to find a way tobehappy yau're you.

The depression you'reexperiencing now is [ei: byothers _ especially new boysyou meet. If you can learn tolet this go, to be gratefuL forwhat you are, then the rightpeople will come into your lifeautomatically, without youreven thinking about it.TRIED AVOIDING m.MDear Sally, I'm reallyunhappy. There's this boy atschool called Kevin. I've likedhim. for nearly eight months. The trouble is that we bothliked each other. Then one ofmy friends kept telling himall sorts of things about me.He hates me now. I've triedavoiding him, but somehowwe always bump into eachother.I get on quite well with hisbest mate and he's alwaysnice to me. I've asked himwhether Kevin and I could befriends again. He said:"Kevin doesn't want anythingto do with you."This is the second time mymate has broken up a boy andme. I didn't mind with theother one, but I love Kevin, soit's really getting medepressed. Please can you help me?Sandra, BedfordDear Sandra, You need to geton top Ofthis situation so thatyour friend stops ruling yourlife -'andyou begin to have asay in the way things go.From now on, don't confidein her by telling her how youfeel about things that areimportant to you. Obviously, she doesn't want you to behappy with a boy, for thiswould mean to her that she'dbe losing your friendship. As you're so friendly withKevin's best mate, it's prettycertain that he's told Kevinhow you feel. Still, it wouldn'thurt to ask Kevin if you mighthave aword with him, as youdon't like the tension betweenyou and you'd like to sort outany misunderstanding. Then, put your cards {)n the

table, and ask Kevin to tellyou just what's been saidabout you. You can onlydefend yourself if yQUknowfirst what it is you have todefend. In this way, you'U clear theair, and Kevin wiLl see thatyou're honest andwelLmeaning. And perhapshe'll learn, too, not to believein idle gossip before checkingon whether or not it's true.Send your problems toSally, Pi$ M~gazine.,King's Reach Tower,Stamford Street,Lendon SEI 9LS.

Surf's up!Itwas a hot day.So hot, in fact, that Kim and-I haddecided to forget our homework (Vallialways gives a little project like, KidnapIan Mitchell And Send Him Round ToMy Place, each weekend) and scive offdown the beach. We were going by train, of course, because it's a long way to walk and Kimwouldn't give me a piggy-back.So there I was, standing on thestation under the clock with a red roseand a rolled-up copy of Pink under myarm (she's as blind as a bat without hercontact lenses) .Then I saw her coming. She waswearing one of those long, floaty Indianskirts with a matching bikini top andshe had a scarf round her head."Got a headache?" I said."Peasant," she muttered.unpleasantly. Or maybe it wasunpeasantly ...I could see things were getting off toa good start Especially when we got onthe train and a young man with a coffeepot asked me if I'd like a coffee."Yes.iplease,' I said.'Well cop 'old of this," he said, handing me a plastic cup, "and hold itsteady ... "So I held it steady and the trainlurched and he poured coffee aU overmy knee."Never mind," said Kim, "it'll blendin well with your fake sun-tan. - ."When wegot to the beach it wasalready very crowded, but Kim said sheknew a good way to get a space toourselves."You go and sit down over there," shesaid, "and I'll come up to you in a -minute ... and whatever I say, don'tlook surprised . _."So I squeezed myself in next to thisfat lady in a pink tank cover and this

"When Irang the hospital yesterday they saidthe spots had gone down but you werestill infectious!"Like a flash the fat lady was up andoff like a one-woman earthquake. Thelittle fella on the other side dropped ahandful of sand in granny's mouth andran off towards the ice-cream van.Within two seconds we had enoughroom round us for Kim to stretchherself out without getting creases inher legs."They won't come back now," shesaid,"and if anyone else comes alongjust froth at the mouth and I'll yell,'Rabies!' ... "She's a friend in a million, that girl.Thank goodness. Her costume was Something Elsethough. Kim's, that is.You must have seen them in themags. They're like bits of black stringknotted in all the right places so thatyou see a lot without seeing the lot. Ifyou see what I mean.My costume? Well, you know me.
