The Southwest-

ern University wom-

en’s soccer team

continued their

spring season with

an unforgettable trip

to London. Twenty-

one players, two

coaches, one train-

er, and countless

parents (rather ea-

ger to volunteer as

chaperones) spent

their Spring Break taking in

the soccer and sights London

has to offer. The Pirates en-

joyed every bit of their inter-

national vacation but put in

some work overseas as well.

These ladies hit the

ground running on day one

with an immediate training

session with their coach and

tour guide, Andrew. This

practice was a nice way to

loosen up after a long flight

across the pond. After, the

‘Bucs spent the day exploring

the Covent Gardens, an area

full of shopping, markets, and

live entertainment. Day two

was quite possibly the high-

light of the trip for the majority

of the team. The morning

started with a session at the

beautiful Fulham FC training

facilities. The Pirates im-

pressed the Fulham coaching

staff with their skills, effort,

and teamwork. On the way

back to the locker rooms to

shower, the girls ran into the

starting goalkeeper for Ful-

ham who had a surprise for

them. After waiting in anxious

anticipation, the SU women’s

soccer team met Clint Demp-

sey.

Dempsey plays

for the Fulham club

but is originally a

Texas native. The

ladies were able to

get a picture with

him before he re-

turned to his train-

ing session

(pictured center).

How could this day

in London get any

better? Well, the

Pirates had a royally grand

afternoon site seeing. Their

boat tour on the Thames Riv-

er included passing the

Houses of Parliament, Big

Ben, Westminster Abbey, St.

James Park, Buckingham

Palace, and Piccadilly Circus.

Outside of Westminster Ab-

bey was a large commotion

as the ‘Bucs were passing by

and they were able to get a

peek of the Queen of Eng-

land along with the rest of the

Royal Family!

The Southwestern

University women’s bas-

ketball team joined forces

with the East Wilco Chal-

lenger Sports (EWCS)

organization to help at a

basketball

camp for spe-

cial needs chil-

dren this past

February.

EWCS is a reg-

istered organi-

zation that pro-

vides year

round, free

sports opportu-

nities for special

needs children

and their sib-

lings in the Wil-

liamson County area. Be-

cause this wonderful

group does not charge for

its camps, they rely large-

ly on the help of volun-

teers and the ‘Bucs wom-

en’s basketball team

stepped up to help out

this amazing cause.

Despite being right

in the middle of their sea-

son, the Pirates traded in

a few extra hours of sleep

on a Saturday morning

for a chance to share

their skills on the court

with special needs chil-

dren. The entire team

was present for this vol-

unteer effort and it was

truly a mutually beneficial

experience (pictured

above).

The Southwestern

women’s basketball team

has been hard at

work this entire

year to make a

difference in the

community, as

this is only one

of many volun-

teer outings they

have participated

in this semester.

These young

women and their

coaches are cer-

tainly setting the

bar high for ex-

cellence in teamwork and

sportsmanship both on

and off the court.

Women’s Basketball Women’s Basketball Women’s Basketball Women’s Basketball

Gives BackGives BackGives BackGives Back Joe Austin was an-nounced as Southwest-ern's Head Football Coach in February 2012, charged with reinstating football at a school that hasn't competed in the sport for over 62 years.

Austin came to Southwestern after trans-forming Hanover College's football program in a short time frame. In three years at Hanover he took a team that was in a decline to a rising star in the Heartland Collegiate Ath-letic Conference, finishing in second place the last two seasons.

Prior to Hanover, Austin guided the Univer-sity of Dubuque to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 28 years. The Spartans finished 7-3 in 2007 and 6-4 in 2006 in a highly competitive Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. During that time Austin's offensive unit set 33 school records and in 2007 averaged 35.6 points and 433.4 offensive yards per game.

A former small-college athlete, Austin played quarterback at St. Ambrose University (Iowa) for two seasons. He suf-fered a broken vertebrae in his back six games into his sophomore season. The injury, which required reconstructive surgery, ended his playing career but jump started his coaching career.

Women’s Golf in the National PollWomen’s Golf in the National PollWomen’s Golf in the National PollWomen’s Golf in the National Poll

The Pirate women’s golf team remains in the top 25 for the

National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) poll, coming in at

number 20. This is two positions higher than the previous na-

tional poll conducted in November, 2011.

Southwestern is only preceded by Centre (4) for the teams in

the top 25 representing the Southern Collegiate Athletic Con-

ference. Trinity women’s golf team is also receiving votes.

The ‘Bucs will face Trinity, St. Mary’s (IN) who is also receiv-

ing votes, and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, who is

currently ranked 13th, along with several other teams in their

next tournament.

The West Region Invitational will be hosted by Southwestern

University and will take place at Berry Creek Country Club in

Georgetown, Texas on April 9th and 10th.

London Calling: Spring Break 2012, continued

Their glorious day ended

by watching an Arsenal versus

Newcastle game at Emirates

Stadium. The ladies even

made a few rowdy fan friends

at the game. The Pirates

played their first match abroad

the following day and came

away with a tie against the

Manchester City Ladies (1-1).

After a tough day on the field,

the ‘Bucs returned to their ho-

tel, The Queen Hotel, for the

evening only to find out that

they were staying in one of the

most haunted hotels in the

world. The SU women’s soccer

team took on the Curzon Ash-

ton Ladies on day four and

again came away with a tie (3-

3).

During their final full day in London, the group headed to Wembley Stadium for a VIP tour. This is one of the largest soccer stadiums in the United Kingdom and will be used as a site of competition during the Olympics this summer. Their

trip concluded with their tour guide, Andrew, handing out “special awards” to a few se-lect girls and parents. The women’s soccer team returned to Texas just in time for clas-ses to resume after their in-credible Spring Break.
