Learning About International Baccalaureate:
“The aim of the IB Program is to develop internationally minded people who,
recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.”
(MYP: From Principles into Practice)
Community Project
Students have been meeting once a week on Wednesdays for the past few weeks to create a way to make our world a better place. During school each week, students go to their community project class instead of homeroom and meet for forty minutes to work on ways they can have a positive impact on our community. They are coming up with ways to change things they see are wrong and do something to help groups of people they feel need their assistance. Students use their interests and talents to create a project that positively impacts the community of their choice. Ask your child about their ideas.
IB term of the month
Approaches to Learning (ATL) skill: Research
Research is broken down into two parts: informational literacy and media literacy. Informational literacy focuses on helping students learn to find, interpret, judge, and create information. When teachers focus on teaching this skill, they are teaching students to collect record, and verify data. They focus on teaching students to assess information to be informed and inform others. Students learn to make connections between various sources of information and present information in a variety of formats and platforms. (MYP: From Principles into Practice 102) Media Literacy focuses on helping students to interact with media to use and create ideas and information. When teachers focus on teaching this skill, they are teaching students to locate,
organize, analyze evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media, including digital social media and online networks. Students will learn to seek a range of perspectives from multiple and varied resources. (MYP: From Principles into Practice 102) ATL skills help students identify what learning technique works best for them so that they become life-long learners.
MIDDLE YEARS COUNSELING NEWSLETTER The newsletter will come as a second attachment in the email with the Pirates’ Spyglass newsletter and will also be posted on the PPS website (www.phillipsprep.com). The purpose of each newsletter is to promote ways for home and school to work together for school success.
School Health News: From the desk of our school nurse, Donna Campbell
Flu (Seasonal Influenza) is more dangerous than the common cold for children. Each year flu
places a large burden on the health and well-being of children and their families. Annual
influenza vaccination is the best method for preventing flu and its potentially severe
complications in children.
Please visit the CDC website for additional parent information regarding the Flu.
