Essential Questions

• Why do we use Engaging Scenarios to engage all students in the learning of the mathematical standards?

• How can we use Engaging Scenarios to engage all students in the learning of the mathematical standards?

• How do Engaging Scenarios support students in the Eight Standards of Mathematical Practice?

Vocabulary activity

• Each person gets a colored piece of paper with vocabulary words listed. DO NOT open it until you are told to.

• You will follow the instructions for your paper.• You have two minutes to complete the task.• Work alone on this one.

Which Pizza Should I Buy?

Learning Objective:

Students will be able to develop and represent a function from a scenario, and be able to translate between representations.

(table, graph, equation, words)

PIZZA PUZZLE

Page 14: Pizza and Patterns: Sense Making of Slope/Intercept Functions Wayne Snyder snyder66@verizon.net Associates in Learning and Leadership Cal Poly Pomona Teacher

Which Pizza Should I Buy?Procedure:

1. Set up the Engaging Scenario

2. Anticipatory Set – place the students into the engaging scenario – interest, relevance, ownership

3. Students manipulate the data to answer questions – inquiry, mathematical modeling

4. Students translate between representations and write explanations/ justifications - literacy

PIZZA PUZZLE

Wayne’s Pizza World sells pizzas for $12 each regardless of toppings, and no other fees. Ilene feels this is too much, so she starts Ilene’s $7 Pizza Club for members only. There is a $15/month membership fee, but pizzas are only $7 each regardless of toppings.

Quick Write: “Which sounds like a better deal to you, and why?”

Representations of the Problem

1. Create 2 T-charts (data tables, function tables), one for each pizza plan.

2. Complete first chart. Look at the three patterns that come from a function table. Repeat with second plan.

3. Graph the two plans. Relate to slope, y-intercept, and equations.

4. Use the information to revisit the original question and to write a detailed justification.

STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICAL PRACTICE

Match the task to the standard(s). Using the set of cards, decide which

practice(s) were addressed in the pizza problem.
