Interview Closure

31

Sometimes the interviewer might ask whether you have any questions, in such a situation:

Ask only if you genuinely have a question. Never be the one to bring up compensation and benefits during an interview. When the interviewers bring it up, speak up! Keep the question focused to the company or your job. Ask follow-up questions but try and cover the essential areas only. Do not interrogate the interviewer. Do not ask questions, which will portray a negative attitude about you.

At the end of the interview, you should thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity. At the end of the interview you must be inquisitive enough to know the result. You can ask something like, “So, when would the results be available? I am keen on joining you”

Page 32: Placement Orientation Capsule - NIIT Donts Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Dont use gum, candy, gutka, paan or cigarettes is prohibited Study

Handshake Manners

A handshake is a universal token of friendliness. A positive handshake will break the ice and will get the interview moving in the right direction

How to shake hands As your approach your interviewer, make eye contact and be sure to give a smile showing some teeth. Meet

head on facing them directly. This will promote openness, confidence and trustworthiness.

Say your name and extend your hand. A woman may want to extend her hand first - just in case the man is waiting for it.

Your grip should be just right. Natural and friendly. Crushing grips can be seen as over powering or obnoxious. A limp grip can give an impression of disinterest. Your grip should be a comfortable pressure communicating confidence and ability.

Extend your right hand at a slight angle, with your thumb up. Touch thumb joint to thumb joint.

Provide a firm handshake but not a bone-breaking one.

32

Page 33: Placement Orientation Capsule - NIIT Donts Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Dont use gum, candy, gutka, paan or cigarettes is prohibited Study

Handshake Blunders

33

• Shaking the tips of the finger - May be perceived as a lack of self confidence.

• Energetic arm pump - Can sometimes be perceived as insincere.

• Extending your arm with your palm facing down - This may be seen as disrespectful.

Page 34: Placement Orientation Capsule - NIIT Donts Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Dont use gum, candy, gutka, paan or cigarettes is prohibited Study

Eye contact

34

• Have an eye contact but don't stare

• If there are several people you are talking to, give them all some eye contact to create a better connection and see if they are listening.

• Giving no eye-contact might make you seem insecure. If you are not used to keeping eye-contact, it might feel a little hard or scary in the beginning but keep working on it and you’ll get used to it.

Page 35: Placement Orientation Capsule - NIIT Donts Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Dont use gum, candy, gutka, paan or cigarettes is prohibited Study

Body Posture

Don’t cross your arms or Legs You have probably already heard you shouldn’t cross your arms as it might make you seem

defensive or guarded. Legs can be kept close to each other. Arms should be in open pose and free. Not locked or stiff.

Relax your shoulders

When you feel tense it’s easily winds up as tension in your shoulders. They might move up and forward a bit. Try to relax. Try to loosen up by shaking the shoulders a bit

and move them back slightly.

Nod when they are talking Nod once in a while to signal that you are listening. But don’t overdo it.

36

Page 37: Placement Orientation Capsule - NIIT Donts Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Dont use gum, candy, gutka, paan or cigarettes is prohibited Study

Body Posture (cont.)

Don’t slouch , sit up straight But in a relaxed way, not in a too tense manner.

Slouching make you look disinterested

Keep you head up , shoulders back and chest out.

When seated lean forward slightly from the hip, this makes you look interested

USE YOUR HANDS MORE CONFIDENTLY Instead of fidgeting with your hands and scratching your face use them to communicate what you

are trying to say.

Use your hands to describe something or to add weight to a point you are trying to make. But don’t use them to much or it might become distracting. And don’t let your hands flail around, use them with some control.

Smile Smile is a powerful way to show that you are confident and positive person.

People will be lot more inclined to listen to you if you seem to be a positive person.
