Brothers,

I am deeply honored to be your Grand Knight for the Columbian year 2017-18.

I joined the Knights to be of service to the Church and to learn more of what the Church is all about. Never did I think I would be holding this position, Thank you Brothers. The coming Columbian year holds great significance, our 50th Anniversary as Council 6043. Over the coming year I will be depending upon many of the Past Grand Knights for guidance and help to make our 50th, truly a year to remember.

We have just finished Vacation Bible School, as usual many Knights joined in with the Parish parents to make it a success for our children. The theme “Maker Fun Factory” not only represented Gods support, but what we do for personal enjoyment, lends unending support for our Parish and it’s activities.

Many Knights aided in the set-up and take down of the stage, PGK Paul Unpingco, PGK Daniel Hughes, SK Jom Sicat and others who I might have missed.

On Friday of VBS we sponsored a cold Breakfast for the Children, Again thanks to the Knights, Dan Hughes, Dave Frankenberger, Bob Wolf, Robert Strawn and Ted Dudziak.

Once again we did Sno-cones for the week at noon. Again thanks to Dan Hughes, Mark Jacops, Mike Burns, and my wife Melanie (after four years she has informed me she’s done) A number of children also came forward to help, Joy Liu, Elliot Sicat, Ellie Nelson, Darrin Fey, Alyssa Ager, Jena Ager and Olivia Ager plus some others, who remained silent helpers.

The result from all this Knights help, we were able by donation and sno-cone sales to raise $1115.25 with expenses of $310.23. The profits will be donated to VBS for their charity Catholic Relief Services.

Over the coming year I hope to see many fellow Knights attending our monthly meetings, the second Thursday of the month. We have much to complete, the plans for our 50th celebration, new members, our Crab feed, Donut & Cookie socials, Festa Italiano, Thanksgiving and Easter food baskets, breakfast with Santa for the Parish’s children along with a number of other events and projects throughout the year. Please give some thought to where you would like to contribute.

The Kof C were in full "cool" glory by offering snow cones w/ 5 flavors to be consumed after Vacation Bible school.

On five super hot summer days these came in as great treat and relief.

Founder of the Franciscan Order, born at Assisi in Umbria, in 1181.

In 1182, Pietro Bernardone returned from a trip to France to find out his wife had

given birth to a son. Far from being excited or apologetic because he'd been

gone, Pietro was furious because she'd had his new son baptized Giovanni

after John the Baptist. The last thing Pietro wanted in his son was a man of God -

- he wanted a man of business, a cloth merchant like he was, and he especially

wanted a son who would reflect his infatuation with France. So he renamed his

son Francesco -- which is the equivalent of calling him Frenchman

Francis enjoyed a very rich easy life growing up because of his father's wealth

and the permissiveness of the times. From the beginning everyone -- and I mean

everyone -- loved Francis. He was constantly happy, charming, and a born

leader. If he was picky, people excused him. If he was ill, people took care of

him. If he was so much of a dreamer he did poorly in school, no one minded. In

many ways he was too easy to like for his own good. No one tried to control him

or teach him.

As he grew up, Francis became the leader of a crowd of young people who spent

their nights in wild parties. Thomas of Celano, his biographer who knew him well,

said, "In other respects an exquisite youth, he attracted to himself a whole retinue

of young people addicted to evil and accustomed to vice." Francis himself said, "I

lived in sin" during that time.

Francis fulfilled every hope of Pietro's -- even falling in love with France. He loved

the songs of France, the romance of France, and especially the free adventurous

troubadours of France who wandered through Europe. And despite his dreaming,

Francis was also good at business. But Francis wanted more..more than wealth

But not holiness! Francis wanted to be a noble, a knight. Battle was the best

place to win the glory and prestige he longed for. He got his first chance

when Assisi declared war on their longtime enemy, the nearby town of Perugia.

Most of the troops from Assisi were butchered in the fight. Only those wealthy

enough to expect to be ransomed were taken prisoner. At last Francis was

among the nobility like he always wanted to be...but chained in a harsh, dark

dungeon. All accounts say that he never lost his happy manner in that horrible

place. Finally, after a year in the dungeon, he was ransomed. Strangely, the

experience didn't seem to change him. He gave himself to partying with as much

joy and abandon as he had before the battle.

Since its addition to the Order’s product portfolio in 2000, long-term care (LTC) insurance has provided the Knights of Columbus with an excellent opportunity to further serve members and their families. And, for our long-term care policy holders in the United States, there’s an added bonus.

It’s called “Provider Pathway,” a program offering access to a network of long-term care providers at discounted rates. The network includes discounts on products, such as hearing aids, diabetic supplies, personal emergency response systems, and durable medical equipment, as well as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, and adult day care.

Eligibility for participation in this program is open to Knights of Columbus long-term care insurance policyholders, their spouses, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law. All providers are fully credentialed and meet state licensing requirements.

If you haven’t yet spoken with me about long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself to do so. There are a few decisions to make in choosing a “plan” — a comprehensive plan that covers care whether you’re at home or in a facility, or one that covers facility only; daily benefit amounts and benefit durations (how much and how long it will last); and the length of the elimination period (waiting period) before benefits kick-in.

Having a professionally trained agent ― and a brother Knight you can trust ― to help guide you through the process is yet another valuable benefit that comes with your membership. Take advantage of it; contact me today.
