What is an edible book festival?

An Edible Book Festival is not only a celebration of reading, it’s a true transliteracy experience! Entrants can create any type of edible representation of a book. It does NOT have to be a cake!

Funniest/PunniestLet your imagination run wild and show us your funny interpretation of a book. You could also use a pun or play on words to change the title a bit.

13C

Page 14: Planning and Hosting an Edible Book Festival

(Maybe a scene from The Hunger Games would be "Peeping Day" instead of "Reaping Day." You could use marshmallow peeps as people.)

Best Banned BookWe talk about the difference between a challenged book and a banned book. Participants can base their entry a book that has been banned somewhere. (This one is The Bible.)

People’s Choice Voting Suggestion

*You do have to make sure it is not possible to ‘rig’ the ballot box and set up voting in a way that only permits one vote per person.

CA Gray Way:

We took a page from George R. R. Martin and used a token voting system. Students received a token upon entering the media center. They were asked to drop it in the cup by their favorite project after viewing them all.

Other things to consider...

✗ If students are going to want to eat/share their entries with friends, have judging before lunch

✗ Give teachers an opportunity to sign up for a time to bring their classes in advance of the day

✗ Possibly schedule it for a Monday so they have more time to prepare?

✗ Require that the entries be THEIR OWN WORK

✗ Have plastic wrap available--some students will want to eat it later

✗ Set a hard deadline for pickup after it’s over--throw out anything left after that deadline

✗ Require that they have a copy of the books to display or at least the cover of the book

Forms

Require a deadline for sign up so that you can plan how much space will be needed that day.

This will also help in spreading out projects which might fit in more than one category as students sign up. (We make them choose just one category to enter.)
