Planning for Using ICT in the Primary School
Using ICT: Curriculum RequirementsThis document can assist teachers of all year groups in their delivery of the curriculum requirements for the Cross-Curricular Skill of Using ICT.
There is a statutory requirement to deliver Using ICT as set out in the 5 ‘E’s:
• Explore(whichincludestwostatements);
• Express;
• Exchange;
• Evaluate;and
• Exhibit.
The 5 ’E’s outline, in very broad terms, the types of Using ICT experiences that pupils should be given. To cover them, you need to give your pupils opportunities to carry out a variety of activities. This requires planning.
When considering how to integrate Using ICT into classroom learning and teaching, you should take into account the 5 ’E’s, the Levels of Progression and the Desirable Features. The Desirable Features show what pupils should demonstrate at each level within each type of ICT.
For more details, see the Key Stages 1 and 2 Using ICT section of the Northern Ireland Curriculum website at www.nicurriculum.org.uk
Using CCEA Tasks and Carrying Out Using ICT ActivitiesThere are approximately 70 CCEA Assessment Tasks for Using ICT, available at www.nicurriculum.org.uk
These are a resource that you can use with every year group:
• asaguideforincorporatingvarioustypesof ICT in ways that give pupils meaningful opportunitiestodeveloptheirskills;
• tohelpyoudevelopideasforyourownclassroomactivities;and
• asastructureandscaffoldforcoveringthecurriculum requirements and providing you with assessment opportunities.
It is important that your pupils have acquired the skills they need to complete a task before they carry it out as an assessment activity.
There is no statutory requirement to use CCEA tasks, except where your school is being moderatedinUsingICT;thenaportfolioshouldbe made up of tasks (see page 21 of our Using ICT Assessment Guidance: Primary (Levels 1–5) booklet for more details).

Planning for Using ICT in the Primary School
Planning for Using ICT in the Primary School There are several ways to go about selecting tasks, to use both as a means of covering the curriculum requirements for Using ICT (in every year group) and at the end of the Key Stage (for statutory assessment purposes).
While each individual teacher can select types of ICT and/or tasks to carry out with their pupils, the best way for a school to plan for Using ICT is through a co-ordinated approach. The following suggestions may help you to get started:
• Asawhole-schoolstaff,lookateachtypeofICT set out in the Desirable Features guidance (Presenting, Film and Animation, Desktop Publishing etc.) Select those that you will realistically be able to focus on in a school year. It is likely that you will not be able to cover all of the types of ICT in one year. One suggestion would be to choose one type of ICT for all year groups to focus on in each half term or term. Depending on the stage that your school is at in terms of implementing Using ICT, it may take a few years to develop and cover all types of ICT.
• Use the Audit Grid in Appendix 1 as a way to start developing a whole-school approach to implementing ICT throughout the curriculum. This can help you to build in activities and/or the use of tasks for both curriculum and assessment purposes. Planning for teaching and learning of the Using ICT requirements is closely linked with planning for assessment opportunities.
• Identify the software and hardware required for the types of ICT you plan to focus on. Take into account that pupils will need to be taught to use these.
• Within each year group, look at your planning overview to identify themes or topics where differenttypesofICTwillfitinandformpartof the topic. You can then incorporate teaching the relevant skills and using the software and hardware into your planning. This will enable pupils to develop their ICT skills in cross-curricular contexts.
• Choose CCEA Using ICT tasks that match the progression of ICT skills you have planned for.Ideally,thesetasksshouldalsofitintothetopics you have planned for each year group.
• ICT co-ordinators could also encourage ICT activities and/or the use of tasks throughout theschoolthatallowpupilstobuildonspecificskills they have developed in previous years.

Planning for Using ICT in the Primary School
Carrying out one of the suggested combinations of tasks in this booklet will enable you to provide pupils with a range of ICT experiences that meet the curriculum requirements.
We have put the combinations together to illustratedifferentwaysinwhichyoucanensureyour pupils have opportunities to develop their ICT skills across the 5 ‘E’s. Please note that most tasks cover more than one level.
Forexample,aYear3teachermightfindthatoneofthe combinations appropriate at both Level 1 and Level2fitsinwellwiththeirplanningfortheyear.
Each of the suggested combinations can also give you a basis for making a summative assessment judgement about the level that a pupil is working at.
Exchange may not naturally form part of the work done for most tasks or ICT activities, so you need to decide how to provide your pupils with opportunities to Exchange.
There are three ways to cover Exchange:
• completingatask(oractivity)whichhasanExchange element built in (for example the CCEAtaskReporterforaDay);or
• completingataskbasedontheDesirableFeatures for Online Collaboration (for example APlacetoShare);or
• addinganExchangeelementtoanytaskorICTactivity that the pupils have done, for example:– the pupils discuss with you how they could
share an animation with others via the schoolwebsite(Level2);or
– they extend a Presenting task by uploading their work to a course that you have set up within the school’s VLE (Level 3).
See Appendix B for more examples of adding an Exchange element to a task.
