Root Flare
• The place where the first set of large lateral roots are attached to the tree.
Types of tree plantings
• Bare root – View Video
• Balled & Burlap – View Video
• Containerized – View Video
Pot Bound Trees
• Shrubs & trees grown in containers are frequently pot-bound
• The roots circle the container and may not ever regain their normal growth pattern
• Plant will be weaker & not live as long
• Cut slices down the ends or cut off the edge roots
Staking
• Usually not necessary
• Causes a weaker trunk
• If required due to shallow roots or soil,– stake upwind– Allow some slack
