BIOTIC -

Plants and other organisms that make up their own food from inorganic substances

All of the living organisms within a given area

In this photograph, the tiger represents the term Biotic, and the grass surrounding this tiger represents the term Autotroph.

Abiotic-All of the non – living organisms within a given area

In this photograph, the rocks, snow, and sky represent all of the Abiotic features.

In this photograph, the stones, water, and sand represent the term Abiotic.

Cellular Respiration - The series of metabolic processes by which living cells produce energy through the oxidation of organic substances.

In this photograph, the substance in the beaker is reacting upon one another, producing energy (which is shown by the balloon blowing up), which can be used by other organisms.

Variation-A difference in structure or character of organisms of the same group or species.

In this picture, there are two wolves. The wolves are in the same species, but their fur color differs from one another. Their fur color varies.

Classification- The assignment of organisms to groups within a system of categories .

This is a photograph on an Arctic Fox. The fox is classified in the Order Carnivora group.

Trait-A characteristic that may be passed down from generation to generation.

In the picture to the right, there are four generations of males. Each male has the characteristic of a cleft chin.

Community-All the populations of different organisms within a given area

In this photograph, there is a duckling, and kitten. The population here is two. There is a community of a duckling and kitten.

Here, there’s a picture of two birds of the same species. They are fighting over a piece of land. They are having a competition over this land.

Competition- the struggle among organisms, both of the same and of different species, for food, space, and other vital requirements.

Decomposer- The organism of decay

This is a picture of a slug. Slugs are what we call organisms of decay. They help dead organisms decompose into the earth, so they can later on be used again in the environment.

Adaptation- The ability of an organism adapt to a changed environment.

This is a rabbit; of course. But this kind of rabbit has a remarkable ability. It has the ability to change color of its fur to match the on coming snow fall, to protect itself from predators.

Ecology- The branch of biology that deals with the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment

This photograph shows a woman releasing a bird. This woman is an ecologist who is releasing this bird into the wild from a rehabilitation center. She interfered with the bird and the bird’s environment for the sake of the bird.

Ecosystem- A community and the physical environment that occupies it

This whole picture represents an ecosystem. The plants and sky are the non living organisms, and the lion is the living.

Mutation-a sudden departure from the parent type in one or more heritable characteristics, caused by a change in a gene or a chromosome.

This duckling has an extra leg, due to either inbreeding, or a gene mutation.

DNA- The molecule that carries genetic information in all living system. It is responsible for the reproduction of all living organisms.

In the photograph to the left, there is the DNA of a banana. This DNA was extracted by using a special biological method.

any organism that exists by preying upon other organisms.

In this picture, the lion and ox are both trying to survive. The ox is trying to get away from the lion alive, while the lion is trying to attack the ox for food. The ox is the prey, and the lion is the predator.

OverpopulationExcessive population of an area to the point of overcrowding, depletion of natural resources, or environmental deterioration

Here, there is an overpopulation of puppies.

Niche- The role of a species in an ecosystem

In this photograph, there are worms. These worms play an important role in an ecosystem. They help to produce the nutrients needed by plants to grow and develop, so they can further contribute to the ecosystem.

HOMEOSTASIS-An organisms ability to maintain a stable living environment.

In this photograph, there is a boy swimming in a pool. Many organisms such as humans go swimming to cool themselves off when they’re body temperature gets too high. This helps maintain their body’s ability to function properly at a normal temperature.

In the picture to the left, There are four skeletons. The fossil record, or the total number of fossils discovered, is four.

Natural Selection-The process in which organisms produce more offspring due to them being more adapted to their environment than others. Organisms that aren’t as adaptive tend to cist to exist.

The elephants adapted to the changed environment by mud bathing. Because of this, they were able to survive.

This hawk is both a secondary consumer, and species. It preys upon only herbivores, and it only has the ability to mate with it’s own kind.

Population all the individuals of one species in a given area

This is a group of humans (one species) in one given area.

The process of cell division in sexually reproducing organisms that reduces the number of chromosomes in reproductive cells from diploid to haploid, leading to the production of gametes in animals and spores in plants.

This picture represents the many stages of meiosis.

Symbiotic Relationship

A relationship in which two different organisms live in close association with each other to benefit of at least one of them

In this picture, there is a shark accompanied by a school of fish. These fish help keep this shark clean, in favor of living. Both the shark and fish are getting a benefit from this relationship. The fish, because they aren’t being eaten, and the shark, because it is being kept clean.
