Trotec Laser introduces iCut finishing on laser platforms starting from 720x430mm.

Trotec Laser has launched a new cutting and finishing option for UV printers. Sought by many printing companies, Trotec now offers the benefits of two worlds in one process: perfectly cut shapes using iCut with a built-in Sony camera system and perfectly finished edges on materials such as acrylics that only laser cutting can provide.

What sorts of jobs are ideal for the Trotec iCut lasers? The most benefit can be reaped from the iCut system on short-run jobs that require intricate cutting paths (eg, printed paper invites,) and/or polished edges (eg, on printed acrylics, POS materials). In both applications conventional mechanical cutting technologies have substantial and costly disadvantages and limitations. Printed materials like acrylic, MDF, polyester, cardboard, paper, textiles and many more can be cut with highest precision and intricacy.

Who is it for?"iCut finishing on the laser is most beneficial for Aussie printers with flatbed UV printing capabilities and for those making money with short-run paper or acrylic jobs" says managing director of Trotec Laser Australia Oliver Kronawittleithner "as this capability opens up a massive range of new products they will be able to offer their customers." In addition, iCut finishing is widely used for membrane switch production as it cuts and welds the several layers together in one single process.

How does iCut finishing work? A camera mounted on the laser head picks up registration marks printed on the various substrates, recognises distortions and rotations in the position of the material in the machine and adjusts the cutting path accordingly. This ensures a precise cut on the print, makes bleeds obsolete and guarantees a flawless end-product each and every time.

What are the commercial benefits? In a nutshell, iCut increases the type of work printers, signmakers and membrane switch manufacturers can offer and boosts productivity, leading the way to a more distinct differentiation of their companies in a very competitive market place. While this technology will not replace existing production processes, it has to potential to enhance and simplify them. "This provides something that most of them are striving for - differentiation from competitors," adds Kronawittleithner.

Where can I see Trotec lasers with iCut?Trotec Laser has operating showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. "We need to be close to our customers and work with them towards a profitable business model utilising the potential of iCut finishing," says Kronawittleithner. "We back this by a proven track record of outstanding service and support over 10 years."

An interesting insight to a first time visit to K Fair by Jeremy GledhillK 2010 was my first K-Fair and it has been an event that I have wanted to attend ever since I decided to work in the plastics industry. Often when you have looked forward to something for a long time it builds up in your mind and when you finally get there it can be a bit of a letdown. I am glad to report that K 2010 surpassed all my expectations.

Of course there was amazing technology on show from blown film lines processing a ton of material an hour to two shot, thin walled packaging with IML. But not everybody is looking for such big ticket items; I found the opportunity to talk with my existing suppliers, including tier two suppliers as some of the most beneficial aspects of the show. In fact within a week of returning to Australia we have been able to put some of the small things I picked up into practise. You don’t know what you don’t know, and that is really highlighted when you visit the K-fair.

The event was very well supported, in some halls it was like trying to catch a train in Shanghai; so many people all working there way down the corridors hoping to catch a glimpse of what ever may be on the nearest stand. When it get’s like this the best thing to do is find another hall to look around and come back later.

My first piece of advice is that you really will get a lot out of the show; yes it is a large expense, but keep in mind you only need to come back with one or two good ideas and the trip will be well and truly paid for. It is also a very efficient way to maintain relationships with suppliers; I found that in the week I was able to meet with all my overseas contacts. This would have taken about three weeks zigzagging around Europe.

It is critical to book early, many companies book there accommodation years in advance. I was lucky enough that one of our suppliers was able to give me one of the rooms they had.

The most important thing to do before getting to the show is to plan. Make sure you get appointments to see the most important suppliers, spread them out over the week. Have a list of all the stands you want to visit, even if you don’t have meetings organised. It is important to note down there locations. The best piece of advise is to pre-order the guide book to the K-show; it is about the size of a Lonely Planet guide book (costs around 22 Euro). The guide book also makes a fantastic reference as it is a who’s who of the world plastics industry. Try to leverage your local distributors of materials and machinery to get you direct meetings with there principles; it is amazing what you can learn talking directly to these companies.

My final piece of advice is to spend as much time at the show as possible, don’t think you will get it all don in a couple of days – you won’t. I was still getting useful information and contacts right up to the time I had to leave. And plan some time just to wonder around and take the atmosphere, it is amazing.

New Micromat Plus shredder concept from Lindner boosts recycling efficiency

With its Micromat Plus series of variously configurable single-shaft shredders for recycling plastic waste, Lindner reSource (www.lindner-resource.com) launched the new machine concept at K 2010.Available in three sizes, these units are optimally designed with low energy consumption and high productivity in mind.Three different drive concepts accommodate specific application needs. The available range of square blade or point blade rotors can be fitted with variously sized blades. Easily replaceable screens with 10 to 50 mm hole diameters make for even greater versatility. The newly developed internal force feeder can be individually adapted to the given application and an increased filling capacity ensures a constantly high material flow. Production waste of different source material characteristics – e.g., hard plastics, filaments or films – can thus be shredded just as optimally for further processing as post-consumer plastics such as PET bottles, agricultural film or carpeting. The patented inspection and maintenance hatch facilitates the replacement of blades and counter-blades as well as trouble shooting. Shutdown times are thus reduced significantly. These characteristics, combined with the convenient screen access, make the system quickly adaptable to changing requirements.

SIPA releases NEW SFR 6 EVO Rotary PET Blow Moulder

2010 NOV 15 SIPA of Veneto, Italy, a global leader of Stretch Blow Moulding Machines for the production of PET, PLA, OPP & multilayer bottles, have released a NEW Rotary Blow Moulder to their existing range. The SFR 6 EVO is the smallest version in the rotary range, with 6 blowing cavities. It is ultra compact and can produce up to 13,800 bottles/hour dependant on bottle design. The new machine is based on technology from two successful blow moulding systems: the SFL linear blow moulder and the SFR rotary blow moulder – both of which are considered among the most reliable systems available on the market today.

The SFR 6 EVO has the following features:- • A preform alignment system inside the machine that contributes to its compactness, which means that the machine can be shipped in a single unit making its installation much faster. • A vertical mould opening (SIPA Patent) which ensures maximum simplicity of preform/bottle transfer wheels and the lowest peripheral speed in the market. • Handling of the preforms is performed by a technopolymer transport chain, with the neck up heating and with very simple and low speed movements. • The heating oven features great process flexibility and can be used to produce extremely high quality standard containers as well as hot fill containers of various shapes. • SIPA ARS and ARS-PLUS air recovery systems results in a 50% saving on compressed air and electricity.

The SFR 6 EVO can produce extremely lightweight and complex containers such as a 1 litre container, weighing only 16g utilizing preforms which determine a total stretch ratio of 18, producing a speed of 2,200bph per cavity.

The design also allows the coupling with SIPA’s range of rotary fillers for synchronised filling and capping (SincroBloc version) for outputs more suited to the Australian and New Zealand markets. Suitable for products such as water, juice & isotonics, teas, carbonated soft drinks, milk & milk based products , edible oil, beer etc.

SIPA are represented in Oceania by HBM Plastics & Packaging Technologies.

Duromer Products – a compounder on the move

2010 was a transformative year for Duromer Products; structurally, geographically and strategically. These changes have left Duromer revived, refreshed and perfectly placed to deliver significantly

increased value to our customers across Australia and New Zealand.

Following ownership changes Duromer is now owned by Wayne McDonald and Jeremy Paton in an equal 50:50 partnership.

Andrew Stewart was appointed General Manager.

New PremisesIn April the company’s production and administrative facilities were moved from Rhodes to a purpose built facility in Prestons, a strategic location in the West of Sydney.
