MQA expandsThe Mining Qaulifications Authority (MQA) onTuesday hosted a Stakeholder EngagementForum at the CN Phathudi Campus of theSekhukhune FET College at Praktiseer.

The meeting in the college hall was very wellattended by delegates, although it seemed thatthe current wage strikes in the area adverselyaffected the attendece of some delegates, especially from local mines. A large number ofFET College students also attended themeeting, where the local expansion of the MQAwas expalained, as well as the authority’s futurerole in training and growing of the miningindustry.

The increasing importance of localrepresentation by the MQA was emphasisedand the role of fledgling regional officeshighlighted with the introduction of keyroleplayers to delegates.

The forum was also attended by keyroleplayers from government such as the Officeof the Premier in Limpopo. The question andanswer session during the meeting proved to bevery popular and roleplayers went to greatlenghts to clasrify uncertainties and to explainthe working of the MQA.

Rain bad for vagrants

When extreme weather strikes it is often the poor that gets hitthe hardest. A vagrant man currently calling Makopung homemoved from an old ruin into nearby bushes after walls startedto collapse around him. He is unable to obtain governmentsocial support as he is without an identity document. In thepicture above Mr Robert Makhubedu showed the newspaperwhere man’s (wet) blankets are being stored in the ruin.

Careful!

Careful driving is necessary when taking on the Abel Erasmus Passtowards the Strydom Tunnel. Part of the road caved away during theheavy rains. Especially at night the markers might not be visible enough.A dangerous hole on which Platinum Gazette previously reported is stillstanding strong after repairs to it - good work road construction team!

The recent heavy rains not only brought inconvenience tohumans and animals, but also some beauty. The waterfall onthe left was photographed at Lepelle Village Section 2, adjacentto Strydom Tunnel, this week. The photographs below were taken between Schoonoord andMohlaletsi Village on Saturday last week. Roads became riversand an abandoned donkey cart stood lonesome while theanimals waited for their owner to return after the rain.

International interest in OscarPistorius’ murder trial currentlybeing heard in the Pretoria HighCourt also placed the focus onSouth Africa as a country.Alan Dershowitz, an American juristand commentator told talk-showhost Piers Morgan on CCN thatSouth Africa is a “failed” and“lawless” country. He added thatSouth Africa has “deep, deep racialdivisions”.His appearance on the talk showwas at the start of the trial and sincethen the hordes of internationaljournalists had enough time toexperience South Africa’shospitality, observe the justicesystem and use things such ourbanking and telecommunicationsystems.According to Max du Preez, a SouthAfrican author and columnist afailed state is “classically defined asa state with a failed judiciary; aninability to provide public services orenforce its own laws; a state withmilitary interference in politics; astate that has lost the monopoly onthe legitimate use of physical forcewithin its borders; a state wherecitizens’ basic human rights areperpetually at risk”.Platinum Gazette asked readerswhether they agree with Dershowits’description of South African or not. They also motivated their answersand told the newspaper what theyfeel is something that works verywell in South Africa and can beseen as an example to the rest ofthe world.

Me. By haar isPeanut.

Mr George Maluleke said: “I think Iagree. With tender corruption andZuma’s Nkandla scandal we showthat we are lawless. We hear thingsand don’t know where it will end. What is good here is the fact thateven in tough economic timesSouth Africa has good jobopportunities compared to othercountries. Government is doing wellto encourage companies to employyoung people”.

Mr Godfrey Katlego said: “Yes,there is no control over crime inSouth Africa. We don’t have work,so people do crime. What is goodabout South Africa is that we have alot of mines”.

Me.

Mr Nice Poeng said: “No! SouthAfrica has good laws! We must lookat countries like Nigeria andZimbabwe where they still hangpeople. We are better than that. Ithink our justice system is anexample for the world”.

Mnr.

Mnr. Willem Montgomery sê: “Ja,mense hier neem reg in eie hande.Die polisie doen of niks, of neem ookdie reg in eie hande. Kyk net hoe isdaardie ou in die Kaap sonder syklere aangerand. Dit pla die volk!Suid-Afrikaners se verdraagsaam-heid oor die jare is ‘n voorbeeld virander lande”.

Mr Mahlatse Selahle said: “SouthAfrica is not a lawless country. Youget a mix of people from countriesall over the world here. The problemis that these foreigners oftenbecome gangsters. I think we havegood banks and hospitals in SouthAfrica”.

Mr Mmusho Serage said: “No, Idon’t agree with him. This is ademocratic country. Our laws workwell and we let the law take itscourse like with Mr Pistorius. We dohave crime, but our lawenforcement officers are trying tocontrol it. Our justice system andlaws are an example to the world”.

Mr Leonard Bengura said: “Idisagree with him. If we werelawless people like Pistoriuswould not have been broughtto trial. I trust our justicesystem and think it is anexample for other countries.Just look at our track recordto put away criminals”.

Mr Kgaogelo Mpethi said: “No, itis not true. South Africa is nicefor us. Look at Malema. He wasspeeding and the cops caughthim and took him to court. SouthAfrica is not lawless. What I likeis our transport system. You cantravel anywhere you want - wehave taxis and buses.Government is also busydelivering electricity and water”.

Mnr. Quintin Krog sê: “Ja, hy is reg.Dit is soms regtig lawless en failedhier in Suid-Afrika. Die polisie iskorrup. As jy ‘n saak wil aanmeld wilhulle jou nie help nie. Ek kanongelukkig aan niks dink waar ons‘n voorbeeld vir ander lande is nie”.

Ms Anna Mamabolo said: “Weare not a lawless and failedcountry! There is everything weneed in this country”.

Ms Betty Rankwe and Ms Petunia Mahlosaid: “Yes, we agree with him. We aresuffering with our roads and schools andservices. Our government is so poor. Thereis also too much crime. What we like aboutSouth Africa is that we are together now asone. South Africa is free. We are onepeople and we have democracy”.

Left: Ms MP Maleka said: “No, ourgovernment is managing to improveour lives. The Pistorius thing wasjust an accident. It is a family affair,it should not be for the whole world”.

Ms Vinolia Majutla and Ms PetronelKwinika said: “Things in SouthAfrica are going fine. Crime is bad,but we are coping. Our justicesystem works just fine. South Africais a beautiful country - everything isbeautiful and an example to theworld”.

Right: Ms Pretty Masuku, JaneMaphanga and Rebone Mokgethwasaid: “It is lawless here. Even if theyknow some did something wrongthey just investigate, investigateand investigate, but don’t really dosomething. They only do things withhigh profile cases such asPistorius’. We like the freedom wehave. We are also ahead with cellphones, e.g. in Zimbabwe you don’teasily get network coverage”.

Is South Africa a failed and lawless country?
