JulyThe Main Street Entertainment

Plaza features an outdoor stage on South Fourth Street off Main Street

with activities planned on Friday and Saturday evenings from May 1 to Sept. 30. Events are free and

family-oriented. See the kiosks at Sixth and Main and Fourth and Main for event listings.Plaza activities are managed by the Plattsmouth Main Street

Association’s Cass County Art & Entertainment Council. Council members are volunteers from across Cass County.

AugustAug. 22 is the Taste

of Plattsmouth, featuring local vendors that will have some

amazing food and beverages available for everyone to taste what the city has

to offer. Held at the Entertainment Plaza at Fourth and Main Streets in downtown Plattsmouth, this event draws large

crowds and features live music and a fun atmosphere.

SeptemberThe Plattsmouth Harvest Festival, formerly

known as the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival, is the oldest annual harvest festival in Nebraska. Now in

its 82nd year, the family-friendly event is four days of pageantry; parades; carnival rides; antique trac-tor show and races; craft fair; car show and shine; contests and games; and lots of entertainment for all ages. This year’s festival is scheduled for Sept. 5 through 8 in Plattsmouth.



OctoberCruise on down to historic Main

Street in downtown Plattsmouth for the annual Cruisin’ Main celebration. More than 350 cars are expected at this show and shine. The streets start filling with cars about 5 p.m. Local food vendors will serve great food to make sure the crowds of people have plenty to eat. Live bands will be playing 1950s to 80s era music. The first Friday in October (the 4th) marks Cruisin’ Main for 2013.

November brings the Outdoor Sportsman Dinner

Auction. This year’s theme is “Outlaw Country” with awards for best dressed “Wild West”

attire. Come join the Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce for this fun, casual night celebrating outdoor sports! The event includes a social hour

with free drinks and appetizers followed by dinner. Look for plenty of silent and live auction items, plus raffles and games. Mark your calendars for Friday, Nov. 1 and sign up for this great event!

DecemberVictorian Christmas on Main, Dec. 6, is a warm way to cel-

ebrate the holiday season. There will be hayrack rides, pony rides, horse-drawn carriage rides and a reindeer petting zoo. Father Christmas will also be at the celebration, with plenty of music and food featured throughout the downtown area. Many businesses will be open with shopping deals and refreshments throughout the event. There is caroling and a tree lighting ceremony at the Cass County Museum. The log cabin and caboose at the end of Main Street will be decorated and open.

PlattsmouthECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Plattsmouth has a positive business environ-ment for new and existing businesses. The Plattsmouth Chamber of Commerce, Cass County Nebraska Economic Development Corporation and the Plattsmouth Main Street Association work together with the City of Plattsmouth for Economic Development and Community Promotion.

The city is very active in driving new businesses to locate in and existing businesses to expand in Plattsmouth. A new retail center is under construc-tion along Highway 75, anchored by a regional grocery store chain. The store will open in the coming months.

The Plattsmouth Industrial Development Corpora-tion (PIDC) is a for-profit corporation with 40 stockholders. It has a capitalization of $100,000, with capitol stock paid in totaling $30,000. PIDC was instrumental in negotiating the purchase by the city of a 60-acre site adjacent to the City of Plattsmouth. The chamber’s development efforts have been active and work closely with the city administrator. State and local financial incentives are available.

As a recruiting and retaining tool, financial as-sistance from the city is available and based, in part, on the number of jobs that will be created or retained. Businesses that may be eligible for as-sistance included those whose source of income is from manufacturing; research and development; processing, storage, transport or sale of goods or

Historical District, including new sewers, new sidewalks, new lighting and more has made the downtown blocks more colorful and lively. Several shops and dining opportunities await visitors to the charming blocks of downtown.

There are also proposed technol-ogy and industrial parks with avail-able spaces for development. PlattsmouthEDUCATION

There are great schools in Plattsmouth, both public and private.

The Plattsmouth Community Schools is an accredited public school district that offers education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district also has an early-childhood program.

Community-supported schools in Plattsmouth began in 1857, about three years after the city was founded. In 1868, Plattsmouth elected its first public board of education.

Since that time the district has seen many changes in its elementary, middle and high schools. And the student population of the district has grown in recent years.

In 2010, a 10,000-square-foot addition significantly increased the size of the elementary school, helping the district better meet the needs of a growing student population. Also, along with several other district-wide improvements, an elevator was added to the early child-hood center to make the building more handicapped accessible.

The district purchased the former A & M Green Power John Deere building, adjacent to the high school, and converted it into the Plattsmouth Academic Curriculum and Equipment Complex. This allowed the district to expand its vocational education and GED programs.

The district has also purchased a seven-acre tract of land for future expansion, perhaps for a new middle school.

A new sports complex is being built for the growing school district. On the grounds of the high school, the Plattsmouth Activities Complex for Kids is needed, according to the district, to meet the needs of a growing student population and to help en-hance academic, fine arts and athletic experiences for students.

According to the district, the complex “will allow us to realize this goal and improve outdoor opportuni-ties, throughout the year, for students in marching band, boys and girls soccer, football, softball, base-ball, and track.” The new complex is being made possible through many contributions from across the Plattsmouth community.

Private schoolsPlattsmouth also has two private schools. St. John the Baptist, a Catholic primary and middle school, offers pre-kindergarten through grade 8. First Baptist School offers a Christian-focused education from kindergarten through grade 12.


PlattsmouthSHOPPING, DINING AND MORE

In search of a great bargain or a rare antique? Or even a rare steak? You don’t have to leave Plattsmouth to find what you need.

It isn’t hard to make a day of it on Main Street. To start out the day, breakfast can be had at a cafe. A mixture of antique stores and niche shops awaits shoppers in downtown. If you want to be pampered, get a massage or spend time at a day spa. Or, get some business taken care of at one of the banks that serve the town center. There is even a hardware store for your home repair needs.

On the western edge of Plattsmouth, a new retail and business center is under construction. A regional grocery store is one of the anchors of the development, and space for restaurants, fast food, health clinic and even a hotel is envisioned. The city also has major retailers with No Frills, Shopko and Thrift Way, to name a few.

Need a new car or to have your car serviced? No need to leave Plattsmouth. With major dealerships and other car repair shops, your needs are covered.

If you’re hungry there are plenty of dining options. From fast food chains to local cafes; fine dining to bar and grill, Plattsmouth offers something to appeal to your palate.

There is plenty of fun and recreation to be had in the Plattsmouth area.

If you are eager to get the kids outside, one of Plattsmouth’s parks might just be the place to go. Each of the city’s parks offers something unique for kids of all ages.

Rhylander Park, named for a former mayor, is Plattsmouth’s largest park and runs along Lincoln Avenue from Third to 11th Avenues. Some of its features include playground equipment, a walking path, volleyball courts and soccer fields.

Near the center of Plattsmouth is Garfield Park at Fifth Street and Second Avenue. Garfield has, among other amenities, playground equipment, a picnic area and a lighted gazebo.

Memorial Park is in the southwest part of the city at Fourth Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets, features include a Frisbee golf course, playground equipment, a covered picnic area and a softball field.

Adjacent to Memorial Park is the city’s Skate Park, on 18th Street. On South 18th Street, behind the Community Center, is Indian Springs Recreation Area.

Indian Springs offers, among other things, a fishing lake with a handicapped-accessible fishing pier. Tennis courts are available at Bradford Drive and Queensway.

If you are looking to get wet, the city offers Twin Rivers Water Park, located just west of Memorial Park at 18th Street and Fourth Avenue.

The park is open from late May to August. Hours of opera-tion are noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., seven days a week throughout the summer. The facility contains a modern pool area and other family-friendly amenities. A large zero-depth to 3 foot swimming area contains several water fountains, umbrellas and water toys. Another swimming area of 4 to 6 feet deep is great for more accomplished swimmers and there is also a 12-foot deep diving area with diving board. For added fun, the spiral water slide empties into a 3-foot deep pool. The diving area contains a water speed slide which propels the adventurous swimmers toward the bottom of the 12-foot-deep area. Swimming lessons are offered throughout the summer.

Schilling Wildlife Management Area

Bordered by the Missouri and Platte rivers, the 1,500-acre area provides resting, feeding and limited breeding grounds for waterfowl.

Fishing and hunting are allowed, but special area regulations apply.

PlattsmouthHISTORYThe birth of Plattsmouth began when, in 1852,

Samuel Martin received a permit to build a trading post on the western edge of the Missouri River. He built a two-story home and another building from which he traded. Martin also operated a ferry from Coonville, the present-day Glenwood, Iowa.

A town-company was formed on October 26, 1854, after the location was passed over as the territorial capital. The following March, the town was incorpo-rated and named the county seat for Cass County. The first town mayor, Wheatley Mickelwait, was not elected until 1857.

When Plattsmouth was founded in 1854, the Mis-souri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade and travel opportuni-ties. Ferries brought passengers across the river, and paddlewheels docked at the town’s riverfront. Overland freight was also a big industry for the town during that time. The route out of Plattsmouth, having fewer tributaries to cross, was preferred by many to carry supplies, including military and civil-

Dr. Robert Livingston, chief surgeon of the Burlington Railroad, convinced the company to make Plattsmouth it’s Nebraska headquarters. Construction of the rail line from Plattsmouth to Lincoln and west to Kearney Junction began in 1869. Livingston had also headed the volunteer army company that was part of the First Nebraska Regiment from 1861 to 1864.

The people of Plattsmouth approved a series of three bond issues to finance construction of a bridge to carry rail traffic across the river from Iowa. In 1880 the bridge was opened to rail traffic.

Expensive, stately homes were built in the downtown area during the early years of the town. Many of these beautiful, historic homes are still inhabited and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Several offer bed-and-breakfast opportunities including Parmele House and Bankers House B&B. The finest in Victorian-style

hospitality can also be experienced while partici-pating in a tea or luncheon at the 1890s Victorian Queen Anne home called the Heights. The Cass County Historical Museum on Main

Street takes you on a journey dating back to when the town was settled in 1854. The museum includes permanent displays of pioneer artifacts, railroad history and agricultural memorabilia. Forty-five buildings in the downtown area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Walking tours are offered daily that tell the story of these buildings. Plattsmouth Public Library, founded as a Car-

negie Corporation Library in 1916, rivals larger libraries with its impressive book circulation, video and computer technology and hands-on reading programs for the whole family. Besides the draw of the historic downtown area,

Lewis and Clark history can be found where the Platte River joins the Missouri at Schilling Wildlife Refuge, east of the downtown area.
