With the fall colors in the rear view mirror, we’re certainly looking forward to a wonderful winter season here in Roanoke, but let’s take time to reflect back.

Our staff has been busy over the past few months with some serious renovations to a couple of our most prestigious parks. September brought a new basketball court , walking path and picnic areas to Jackson Park. And the fall colors looked brighter than ever in Elmwood Park thanks to a $7 million dollar renovation that includes many new amenities including a new walkway that leads to a towering new stage and seating area that will be ideal for spring concerts and festivals.

Driving forward into winter, we’re not slowing down! The former “countryside” area is currently being transformed into a brand new park complete with a state-of-the-art playground and a walking path that will lead travelers through a wonderfully rolling landscape.

So as the temperatures drop, we invite you to brave the weather and stay in tune with the outdoors by visiting one of our many best-in-class parks right here in Roanoke.

The evolution of Elmwood Park

During the 1830s the area that is now Elmwood Park was part of a 200-acre estate built by Jonathan Tosh. In 1846, Col. William Madison Peyton bought the property and named it “Elmwood.” Col. Peyton planted a variety of trees and other flora including a Japanese magnolia, which was given to him in 1858 by Commodore Perry as a gift from his tenure as American Ambassador to Japan. This Japanese magnolia remains in the park to this day.

Peyton Leftwich Terry purchased Elmwood in 1858. By the time Big Lick became Roanoke in 1882, Peyton Terry had expanded the Elmwood estate to 650 acres stretching from Mill Mountain, to the railroad. Peyton Terry sold the Elmwood estate, with the exception of 6.5 acres around the house, to the Roanoke Land and Improvement Company. Elmwood was the center of social life during the 1880 – 1890s with numerous parties and even jousting tournaments hosted by the Terrys. In 1910 the family sold the house and remaining land to the City for $150,000.

The land became Elmwood Park and the Terry House. Built in the 1830s, and located on the top of the hill where boulders are now exposed, this house served as the City’s first public library from 1921 to 1952. During its early years, the park boasted tennis courts and a bandstand that brought in crowds for concerts. By the 1950s, the park included a lake with a fountain and a fence extending around its perimeter.

The Terry House was demolished in 1964 and the lake was drained and replaced by an amphitheater in 1968. In the 1980s the first master plan for the park was developed. Celebrated architect Charles Moore collaborated with landscape architect Lester Collins to groom the park into a series of outdoor places.

On October 19, 2013 a ribbon cutting celebrated the re-grand opening of Elmwood Park. The newly renovated park remains a site for many of Roanoke’s festivals and cultural events, hosting more than 50 celebrations annually for a diverse range of organizations.

A New Year’s Revolution – The Roanoke 100 Miler

The Roanoke 100 Miler is a unique community active-living campaign that challenges people to do 100 miles in 100 days completely human powered.

Last year, more than 1,200 people took this challenge and churned out a grand total of 325,000 miles. That’s an average of 249 miles per person!

Starting on January 7th and ending on April 15th, we ask you to sign up to walk, hike, bike, run, or paddle your way to 100 miles or more in 100 days. Each participant will receive weekly motivational emails from Active Andy, our official mascot, and be entered into random weekly prize drawings.

Brand new for 2014, we’re encouraging “man’s best friend” to join us. Pet owners will be happy to hear that this year’s registration will allow you to sign up your K9 partner for a tale waggin’ good time.
