. This brochure was developed with

assistance from the Rivanna chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists.

WELCOME Pleasant Grove Park serves many purposes, one of which is to provide park visitors with access to nature. The Rivanna River and the adjacent forests and fields abound with wild-life, both plants and animals. The many habitats at Pleasant Grove are managed for wildlife richness and the park’s many trails provide abundant opportunities to view this wildlife in its natural setting.

Please use this trail guide as you enjoy your adventure to help enhance your nature experience while visiting.

PARK HISTORY The county purchased 969 acres of farm land in 1994 when members of the Historical Society suggested that it would be an ideal location for a park and public trail system. From that notion, the Fluvanna Heritage Trail Foundation was formed and created the first trails at the park.

The Foundation continues to work with Fluvanna County Parks and Recreation on the trails today which have grown to 22 miles of trails for everyone to enjoy. The Heritage Trail

Foundation also was the main catalyst in helping to create and design the Eastern Trailhead, Dog Park entrance, and ADA accessible Julie King Sandy Beach Trail leading to the scenic Rivanna River.

PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE Planning ahead is the easiest way to protect outdoor places and yourself during your visit. Bring waste containers if you are walking a dog, wear proper footwear, as the terrain can be challenging, and bring plenty of fluids.

KEEP WILDLIFE WILD Pleasant Grove Park is home to a variety of wildlife. Observe wildlife from a distance, never feed them human food or leave scraps behind. Animals that become reliant on human handouts lose the ability to find food on their own and can easily become malnourished. Many animals become used to human trail activity. Traveling off-trail may cause added stress to animals and damage habitat. Keep wildlife wild by staying on trails and not approaching, harassing or feeding them.

SHARE OUR TRAILS The yield sequence on the trails is bikers yield to hikers and horses; Hikers yield to Horses. When passing others on trails, slow down and be courteous, offer a friendly greeting. Bikers, because they travel at higher speeds, have an extra responsibility to slow down and yield to slower moving visitors. Please respect others and share our trails.

HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS The Pleasant Grove House Museum and Welcome Center is located at the Western Trailhead. Visitors can tour the 1854 home, browse the exhibit galleries or visit our reading room to learn more about Fluvanna's history.
