Choking
• Choking is a blockage of the airway, often caused by food, vomit, or small objects that babies put into their mouths
• Each year over 15,000 children under 5 years of age are treated at Accident and Emergency Units after choking
• Severe choking stops babies breathing

Drowning
Drowning in the UK
• 4% of the drownings in the UK are children aged 0-4 years old
• Babies and infants can drown in as little as 4-5cm of water, just enough to cover the nose and mouth
• Babies and infants can start to drown in seconds
• Babies and infants often drown because they do not have the strength to lift their head out of the water
Drowning
Drowning Prevention
• Keep children under constant supervision around the water
• Always supervise bath time
• Empty paddling pools immediately after use
• Fence off ponds, pools, etc
• Teach children swimming and lifesaving skills as soon as they are old enough to learn them
In the event of drowning
Lift the baby from the water
Check for response
Use the CPR sequence
