THE TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 11, 2015

From the Pastor:During the past week, I attended the monthly faculty meeting at St. Mary’s School and shared some ideas with the teachers and staff. All of our school employees have worked extra hard this year to welcome a large number of new students. They have gone the extra mile to help each student fit in and succeed. I can’t say enough good things about them!

Last Saturday, we had a pre-Baptism class in Spanish for parents and godparents. As a result we will soon be celebrating five more Baptisms. Participation at the Spanish-language religious education class for adults, held on Fridays at 6:30 p.m., has increased to nine persons.

This Wednesday, October 14, is the anniversary of the dedication of our church building in 1895. I don’t know whether it is generally known that the church was dedicated to the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, even though it was always called “Saint Mary’s.” Many churches called by that name have a secondary title, such as St. Mary of the Assumption or St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. The title of our Church recalls the truth solemnly proclaimed by the Council of Ephesus in the year 431, where it was affirmed that Mary is correctly called “Mother of God” because she gave birth to Jesus, who is one Person with two natures, human and divine.

On Thursday, the Parish Pastoral Council will hold its monthly meeting. These meetings are always valuable opportunities to consider the successes, failures, and priorities of parish life. I am grateful to those who give freely of their time to serve on the Council and share their wisdom with me.

Yours in Christ,Fr. Thomas Buffer
