Dear Churchill Families,

The 2019 prom activities will be held on Saturday, May 18th. This letter contains information regarding prom night activities and expectations for prom participants. We would appreciate your involvement and support in making the evening successful, enjoyable, and memorable for all.

Many of our students and parents are preparing for Winston Churchill High School’s prom at The Fillmore in Sil-ver Spring, MD. The address is: 8656 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Prom is an exciting event for eve-ryone to share in an evening of unforgettable memories. Unfortunately, Winston Churchill HS has had past inci-dents with some alcohol consumption and drug use.

All school rules and expectations for appropriate behavior will be in place. The MCPS Code of Conduct applies to the prom as an event that is school sponsored and an extension of the classroom. Students found to violate school rules as outlined in the code of conduct may not be able to attend senior banquet and potentially graduation due to consequences.

Here are some suggestions that experts offer to help and your student(s) plan for a safe and enjoyable prom night:

Plan the evening with your student(s), ensuring that you have a complete itinerary for the night, including whom they will be with, where they will be going after the prom, and contact numbers.

Discuss drinking, drugs, driving under the influence, and sex—and be specific about your expectations. Ask them how they plan to keep safe and avoid actions that they will regret. Reinforce your belief in their character and in their ability to act responsibly. You can never have this discussion too often, especially around this time.

Determine who will be driving. If they are not driving themselves, it is important for you to know who will be driving. Emphasize that the dangers of driving under the influence are particularly high on prom night. Also, think carefully about the use of “party buses.” Students often claim these buses ensure a safe night, but too often, that has not been the case. If hiring a party bus, consider having a parent chaperone on the bus and get clear agree-ments from the driver and company about their procedures for handling alcohol and drug use. From our experi-ence, party buses have been the host to many illegal and detrimental behaviors.

Plan safe activities for after the prom. Organize supervised drug-free and alcohol-free parties for your teens and their friends. If your student(s) is/are going to someone else’s home after prom, check with the parents/guardians to ensure that they will be present and will not allow drinking. Establish periodic mandatory call-in times with your student(s) and make sure you are available to call or be called throughout the night.

Optional post-prom activities will be held at Winston Churchill High School from Saturday May 18th 11:45 pm to Sunday May 19th 4:00 am. Students will enter through the Bulldog Lobby and will be able to participate in a vari-ety of fun, safe, and supervised activities that follow a general carnival and casino theme. Food will be provided. The cost of post-prom is $10.00 to be paid for through the PTSA. Details were sent from Winston Churchill HS and are in the Winston Weekly.

Winston Churchill High School is committed to organizing an enjoyable prom for our students and their families. We value your partnership in ensuring a safe night for all that are involved.

Thank you,

Brandice C. Heckert

Principal

Dear parents of and students who need to take the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA),

On Wednesday and Thursday, May 22nd and 23rd, there will be an administration of the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment (MISA). The MISA is administered to students after completion or as students fulfill their third science credit. The 2018-2019 school year is a no fault year for students. Students’ must participate in the exam to fulfill their high school science assessment for graduation. The test has 5 sections that are 40 minutes each. There will be two administrations of the test:

1. If your student is NOT currently enrolled in Honors Physics or AP Physics 1, they will take the test on Wednesday and Thursday, May 22nd - 23rd at 7:45 am.

2. If your student IS currently enrolled in Honors Physics or AP Physics 1 and your student receives testing accommodations, they will take the test on Wednesday and Thursday, May 22nd - 23rd at 7:45 am.

3. If your student IS currently enrolled in Honors Physics or AP Physics 1 (and does not receive accommodations), they will take the test in their scheduled Physics class after May 29th - June 4th.

It is extremely important for students to arrive on-time on their testing day as it is a requirement for graduation. Practice MISA tests are available at https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/whitmanhs/academics/MHSA.aspx For more information about the MISA can be found at http://marylandpublicschools.org/about/Pages/DAAIT/Assessment/MISA/index.aspx If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Marie Gasaway at 240-740-5400 or email at [email protected].
