THE RABBI'S MESSAGE

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

These lines are put to paper immediately after Yom Kippur andjust prior to Sukkos, our festival of a joyous harvest. In daysgone by, when the psalmist gave vent to his feelings about thisseason, he could say "The pastures are clothed with flocks; thevalleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, theyalso sing." Although we are not men of the soil any more, still we sharehis sense of joy this time of the year. NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK ... .. ........ ........ .. .. ..NOVFNBER 1967

Our High Holy Days, 5728, were thrilling, exciting and inspiring. Theinspirational services conducted by our Rabbi and the emotional impact of acompletely full sanctuary with not an empty seat to be found was truly over-whelming. And adding to this the thrill, the excitement and the pure joyof anticipation as we realize that this year will see the start of construc-tion of our own permanent home and the end of our nomadic wandering madethis a most meaningful time in the life of our congregation.

As I write this message for our November Reflections, I am looking for-ward with eager anticipation to our Congregational Meeting on October 29 atwhich I fully expect the membership to accept the recommendations of ourGeneral Building Committee and authorize the expenditure of funds for aBuilding Fund Campaign to commence on January 14. The key to that campaignwill be Dedication. The Dedication of each and every member of Temple RodefShalom measured in both the areas of working and of giving. I have no doubtsthat we are prepared to accept the responsibility, and that we each possessthe devotion required to see this task through to the end.

Our sanctuary dedicated to the service of God, our congregation, ourcommunity and all mankind will rise in the coming months, and it will rise, brick by brick, with pride, with dignity, and with a community of effortwhich will see each and every one of us involved to the extent of eachindividual's ability to help. This effort will not be without sacrifice, but the kind of sacrifice that will give to each of us an inner satisfac-tion beyond measure.

And truly Temple Rodef Shalom will be inscribed In the Book of Life.

REASON TO FFR'I

"What we should fear most is the rise of ageneration of prosperous Jews who have nospiritual anchorage, or a generation of clever, restless 'Jews of quick ferment: and high volt-age, rooted in no religious tradition, rever-ent of no moral code, ignorani of all Jewishlearning and held to social responsibility byno inner spiritual restraint, --̀ who will rangeand bluster all over the Ameri can scene fromliterature and art to politis and governmentand will commit their fellow Jews:in the eyesof the American people Such floating minesare a danger'to any people, but especially toa minority group. Some of these mines arealready exploding.,

"If American Jewry of tomorrow will restorewhat has become peripheral in our life to thecentera&ain - the synagogue, the school, theacademy, and the religious disciplines of guda-ism -- if it will recapture the wisdom of ourancient teachers who admonished us that thestudy of the Torah outweighs all other com-mandments for it leads directly to them all --then American Jewry is destined to enjoy aresplendent century of spiritual growth inthis gracious land,"

JEWISH LIFE AROUND US

ENROLLMENT UP AT HtJC-JIR

As attendance at most theologicalschools continues to stagnate, theHebrew Union College-Jewish Instituteof Religion has maintained peak en-rollment for the second consecutiveyear. On a par with last year'srecord number of new students 57young men recently registered to be-gin five years of intensive studyfor the rabbinate at the seminary'sthree campuses in Cincirthatij NewYork and Los Angeles. They broughtto 238 the number of rabbinicalstudents presently enrolled at theCollege-Institute.

WOMEN RABBIS?

The time for the ordination Of femalerabbis may hot be far off: Leo BaeckCollege in London has announced thatwomen will be accepted for training asReform rabbis at the college. Accord-ing to the announcement, it is expectedthat they would probably undertake edu-cational rather than direct rabbinicworks in large communities they could bepart of a team of spiritual leaders.

All this points up the increasing roleof the woman in Jewish life, which willcome as no surprise to those who knowthat several U.S. temples -- all Re-form -- have women presidents.
