1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

OPPORTUNITY: Profitable growth to meet customer demand and remain competitive

Residential, government, and business customers continue to call for greater speeds, more

functionality, and lower costs to support a wide variety of applications such as on-demand video,

Voice-over-IP (VoIP), video conferencing, video monitoring, streaming movies, interactive gaming,

and IPTV. This has placed increasing pressure on carriers, service providers, and private network

operators to provide more capacity and throughput while ensuring the highest levels of reliability.

In response, wireline and wireless service providers are broadening their coverage areas and service

offerings and deploying higher-capacity, converged networks while striving to remain profitable.

Simultaneously, wireline carriers are experiencing continued commoditization of voice services while

their customers shift to VoIP and mobile phone services. As these carriers evolve their networks, they

have to support the growth of more expansive service offerings while balancing capital expenditures

and operational costs to achieve a more profitable bottom line. In private networks, organizations

are in the process of migrating their legacy TDM systems to IP-based, converged networks to meet

ever-increasing user demands.

Clearly, there is an opportunity for the right technology to help them achieve these business-building

objectives.

SOLUTION: Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) 450

2.3 PMP 450 OVERVIEW

PMP 450 Series access networks consist of Access Point (AP) Modules and Subscriber Modules

(SM). Each AP sector operates over a single-frequency channel using Time Division Duplex (TDD) in

each direction. In a typical deployment, the AP communicates with each SM individually, and each

AP can support up to 238 SMs. In synchronized operation, all APs transmit at the same time.

Subsequently, all SMs transmit at the same time. GPS synchronization technology times all

access-network traffic, virtually eliminating self-interference.

PMP 450 Access Point Modules: APs are self-contained, connectorized outdoor transceivers that

contain all the radio, networking, antenna, and surge suppression electronics. APs are designed for

use with external antennas, enabling the radios to cope with more difficult radio conditions. Units

can be rooftop or tower mounted, and each AP uses an indoor power supply module to provide

power-over- Ethernet (PoE). Cat 5e cabling connects the power supply to the outdoor AP.

Each AP provides a specified sector of coverage and has up to 125 Mbps maximum throughput

capacity. You can choose to deploy an AP with any appropriate antenna to satisfy your coverage

needs. Cambium offers several options, including 60-degree or 90-degree sector antennas. Up to

six APs can be deployed in a single ring on a tower. A second AP ring can be installed on the same

tower at a different frequency to achieve more than 1 Gbps throughput. As an example, if you de-

ploy six 5.8 GHz, 60- degree APs on a tower and need additional coverage and/or capacity, you can

deploy another six 60- degree APs at 5.4 GHz on the same tower. In fact, when using our high-per-

formance sector antennas, careful frequency planning, and a clean RF environment, you can re-use

frequencies from sector to sector, allowing you to most effectively use the spectrum that is available

to you.

PMP 450 Subscriber Module: SMs are integrated outdoor transceivers containing radio, antenna,

and networking electronics. SMs can be rooftop or tower mounted, and each SM requires a

power supply unit. The indoor-deployed power supply provides PoE to the subscriber module. Cat

5e cable connects the indoor power supply to the outdoor-mounted SM. SMs do not include

embedded surge suppression. So, we recommend that you add an external surge suppression

device for protection from the harmful effects of power surges induced into the electronics as a

result of nearby lightning strikes. The SM is offered as an integrated or connectorized model. The

gain of the integrated version can be augmented using a CLIP or reflector dish to extend the range

of the units, if desired. The connectorized version has two male N-type cables that can be added to

any appropriate antenna.

Each AP can support up to 238 SMs. SMs offer scalable capacities of 4, 10, and 20 Mbps plus an

uncapped capacity. The capacity you select is a capacity cap that determines the maximum

achievable sustained throughput for each SM. You can begin with a 4 or 10 Mbps and upgrade to

20 Mbps or uncapped capacity at any time without changing your equipment. Uncapped capacity

gives you up to 55 Mbps throughput.

•Power Supplies: Depending on your system configuration, you will need to deploy a power supply

with each AP and SM. The following are the approved power supply options:

2.4 THROUGHPUT CAPACITIES

All APs have a throughput capacity of up to 125 Mbps per sector. SMs have scalable throughput

capacities at 4, 10 and 20 Mbps as well as “uncapped” capacity. Uncapped capacity allows the SM

to provide up to 55 Mbps. A capacity cap sets the maximum throughput achievable for that device.

It is important to remember that the total capacity of the SMs linked to a particular AP sector share

the 125 Mbps capacity provided by the AP per sector. As an example, if you have one AP with a

60-degree sector connected to 10 SMs, the average throughput capacity of each SM would be 12

Mbps. Although that is the average throughput, the throughput capacity mix for your SMs can vary.

You might have 5 SMs at 4 Mbps maximum capacity, three SMs at 15 Mbps, and two at 30 Mbps for

a 125 Mbps total capacity spread across the 10 SMs. While the top speed limit is set by the SM

model you purchase or by the upgrade license key that has been applied, the throughput to each

radio can be fully managed through Quality-of-Service settings in the subscriber software.

When you order an SM, you need to specify the throughput capacity you require for the

deployment. You can begin with a lower capacity and increase capacity up to the uncapped

maximum any time after deployment without changing equipment. For example, you could order

an SM with 10 Mbps capacity and a year later upgrade the SM’s capacity to 20 Mbps. After that,

you could also upgrade the 20 Mbps capacity to “uncapped” capacity as your throughput needs

increase.

Capacity upgrades are supplied via an Upgrade License Key which can be purchased from your

authorized Cambium Connected Partner distributor or solutions provider. The upgrade is applied by

entering the supplied URL in a PMP 450 module-connected Web browser address bar. Once this is

done, the additional capacity is available immediately.

2.5 TIME DIVISION DUPLEXING (TDD)

PMP 450 systems use TDD. This means that one channel alternately transmits and receives, rather

than using one channel for transmitting and a second channel for receiving. To achieve this, each AP

provides synchronization to its SMs, synchronizing transmit and receive signals so that all APs

transmit at the same time and all APs receive at the same time. When an AP is transmitting, the SMs

are receiving. Conversely, when the SMs are transmitting, the AP is receiving. To synchronize the

signals, the PMP 450 offers a choice of GPS synchronization options, including:

PMP 450

For AP clusters, you will need this power supply,

model number ACPS120WA, for connecting to a

CMM3 or CMM4.

For your SMs, you will use the standard

ACPSSW-09B or ACPSSW-13B (shown here).

•ClusterManagementModule(CMM)

•UniversalGlobalPositioningSystem(UGPS)

•EmbeddedGPS

In addition, within a specific geographic area, APs that can “hear” each other can use a common

synchronization scheme to further reduce self-interference with the network. The advantage is

that GPS synchronization allows you to densely pack radios on a rooftop or tower with virtually no

self-interference.

The PMP 450 platform utilizes the Autosync feature, which will automatically manage the source

of the GPS synchronization signal to the network and apply the appropriate one. If, for any reason,

that signal is no longer usable, it will automatically switch to a working source, or generate its own

sync pulse (should you choose this option).

2.6 ADAPTIVE MODULATION

PMP 450 units can transport data over a wireless link using a number of different modulation

modes. The radio will automatically select QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying), 16 QAM, 64 QAM,

or 256 QAM based on the RF conditions to provide 1x/2x, 4x, 6x, 8x operation, respectively.

Please see the PMP 450 Planning Guide for performance charts for all models.

2.7 ORTHOGONAL FREQUENCY DIVISION MULTIPLEXING (OFDM)

PMP 450 systems transmit using OFDM. The channel bandwidth of the OFDM signal can be set to

5, 10 or 20 MHz. OFDM sends transmissions over multiple frequencies, or sub-carriers. The multiple

sub-carriers result in higher spectral efficiency and higher resistance to:

•Multi-pathinterferencewhichoccurswhenobjectsintheairgapsplitabeamintopartsthattravel

different paths and interfere with each other at the receiver.

•Frequencyselectivefadingwhichoccurswhenamplitudesofarrivingsignalscanceleachother

out at the receiver.

2.8 MULTIPLE-INPUT, MULTIPLE-OUTPUT (MIMO)

PMP 450 systems use MIMO technology. The coding schemes employed in this platform send

different data streams simultaneously over the two polarities, allowing the PMP 450 to double the

throughput of a radio transmission during good RF conditions (a high signal-to-noise, or SNR, ratio).

When the effects of MIMO are combined with those of OFDM and a high link budget, there is a high

probability that the link can reliably communicate over an nLOS, and, in many cases, over an NLOS

path.

2.9 ENCRYPTION

PMP 450 solutions include options for 56-bit Data Encryption Standard (DES) or FIPS 197 128-bit

AES encryption. When you install the system, you can choose the encryption method that best

meets your infrastructure and application requirements. Neither method adversely affects the

performance or throughput of the system.

For countries that have restrictions on AES encryption equipment, there is an Access Point model

available without AES present in the software.

2.10 SYSTEM MANAGEMENT

PMP 450 systems can be managed through an embedded Management Agent which supports the

following interfaces:

•HTTP

•RADIUSauthentication

•TELNET

•SNMP

•SNTP

•Syslog

•CambiumWirelessManagersoftware

•CNUTsoftware

You can connect management workstations, network management systems, or PCs to this agent using the module’s Ethernet port or over the air (SMs).

Web Server: The PMP 450’s Management Agent contains a web server which supports access via HTTP interface. Requiring no special management software, the Management Agent gives you a convenient method to manage PMP 450 equipment from a locally connected computer or from a network-management workstation. The web-based management interfaces provide compre-hensive web-based fault, configuration, performance, and security management functions for AP and SM modules.

•Identity-Based User Accounts: When identity-based user accounts are configured, a security officer can define up to four user accounts, each of which may have one of the four possible roles:

– Administrator: An administrator has full read-and-write permissions.

– Installer: An installer has full read-and-write permissions, except that an installer can not add or delete users or change the password of any other user.

– Technician: A technician has permissions to modify basic radio parameters and view web pages generated by the Web server.

– Guest: A guest has no write permissions and only a limited view of general status information.

•Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS): PMP 450 systems support RADIUS functionality, including

– Authentication: This function allows only known SMs onto the network to block rogue SMs. You also can configure Authentication to ensure that SMs are connected to a known network and prevent SMs from connecting to a rogue AP.

3.0 CONFIGURATION AND ORDERING This section of the Sales Guide gives you information to help you plan for purchasing and installing a

PMP 450 system.

3.1 ORDERING A PMP 450

There are several key issues involved in configuring and ordering a PMP 450 system. This Sales

Guide provides an overview of the ordering process. Detailed ordering procedures with part

numbers and descriptions can be found in the PMP 450 Ordering Guide.

Regulatory Planning

To begin, you should contact the applicable radio regulator in your area to identify any restrictions

or limitations imposed on radio equipment operating in your chosen RF band and to find out

whether or not you will need to register your PMP network. It is the user’s responsibility to make

sure that the system complies with any restrictions that may be imposed by the local regulator.

Certain regulators may restrict frequency usage and channel width, and may limit the amount of

conducted or radiated transmitter power. Many countries impose EIRP limits on products operating

in the bands used by the PMP 450 Series radios. Other countries such as the US impose power limits

on products operating in the 5.8 GHz band. When using connectorized APs with external antennas,

regulations may require that the maximum transmit power be reduced

If, after obtaining the regulatory requirements, you need assistance in planning your system to

comply with the regulations, contact your local Cambium area manager or an authorized Cambium

ConnectedPartner for guidance with system compliance.

Site Planning

There are many factors to be considered when choosing sites for the APs and SMs, power supplies,

CMM (if applicable), and GPS antenna (if applicable). Some key considerations for site selection

include:

•HeightandlocationoftheAPsandSMstoensurethatpeoplecannottamperwiththeequipment

•HeightandlocationoftheAPsandSMstoprovidethebestpossibleradiopathconditions;APsshould be positioned:

– Where there is available tower or rooftop space

– Where a grounding system is available

– With hardware that the wind and ambient vibrations cannot flex or move

– At a height that is higher than the tallest point of objects immediately around the APs

– At least 2 feet (0.6 meters) below the tallest point on the tower, pole, or roof (for lightning protection)

Link Planning

Factors such as range, path loss due to obstacles, and throughput need to be considered when

planning links. So, we recommend that you perform a site survey to identify all the obstructions in

the path and to assess the risk of interference. This information is necessary to achieve an accurate

link feasibility assessment. In addition, you will need to calculate the range or reach of the link to

determine whether or not your proposed system will be able to span the distance reliably. Other

factorsthatshouldbeidentifiedinclude:•Pathloss–theamountofattenuation,orlossofsignal

intensity, between the two ends of the link

•MaximumpowerlevelforConnectorizedAPs–ifaConnectorizedAPwillbeusedinacountry that imposes an EIRP limit in the selected band, you need to calculate the highest setting of maximum power level that will be permitted

•Linkloss–thetotalattenuationofthewirelesssignalbetweentwopoint-to-multipointunits

•Rxsignallevel–theRxsensitivityofeachmodule

•Fademargin–freespacepathloss, thedifferencebetweenthereceivesignal’sstrengthandthe strength that the receiver requires for maintaining a reliable link; a high fade margin is characteristic of a more reliable link.

Analyze the RF Environment

An essential element in RF network planning is the analysis of spectrum usage and the strength of

the signals that occupy the spectrum you are planning to use. You can measure and chart the results

by using the Spectrum Analyzer feature in SMs or by using a spectrum analyzer. Regardless of which

method you use, you should analyze spectrum usage at various time of the day, on various days of

the week, and periodically into the future. Then, as new RF neighbors move in or consumer devices

proliferate in your spectrum, the spectrum analysis will keep you aware of the potential for

interference with your network.

4.1 BENEFITS – WHO BENEFITS FROM A PMP 450 PURCHASE DECISION?

The information below describes how organizations such as carriers, service providers, government

agencies and a wide variety of enterprises can benefit from our PMP 450 platform.

How can I cost-justify the purchase of a PMP 450 solution?

If using a 5 GHz system, a prominent financial benefit when evaluating a PMP 450 solution is that

you can greatly increase throughput to more than 1 Gbps per tower while interoperating with your

existing PMP 430 OFDM system simultaneously over a single channel. In addition, there several other

opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and/or increase revenues, including:

•Increaserevenuesbysupplyinghigh-speedconnectivitytounservedandhard-to-reachlocations and customers

We’re so overstretched now. How much are we going to have to learn?

PMP 450 systems are optimized for fast and easy deployment, reducing deployment man-hours and

stress. Operation is easy with our intuitive user interface, and the systems work with your existing

PMP 100 and PMP 430 systems. A system can literally be installed in a matter of hours.

How will this help us grow the network?

Our PMP 450 is designed for growth. By delivering more than 700 Mbps per AP ring and more than

1 Gbps per tower with two AP rings, you can give your customers or users all the speed they need

for everything from streaming video and gaming to real-time data access, video conferencing, HDTV

and more. Plus, growth is faster and simpler. Because the PMP is wireless, there are no trenches to

dig and no copper or fiber to put down. With GPS synchronization, you can scale from small to re-

gion- wide coverage. The system deploys quickly and works with your existing systems. So, there are

no expensive, labor-intensive and time-consuming fork-lift replacements.

What design and deployment assistance can we get?

Working with our authorized partners, we provide a variety of pre-sales, post-sales, and technical support services to our customers globally. We can help you design the system, plan the modules, and install the system. After installation, we can work with you to ensure smooth network operations and management.

4.2 NEED – WHAT ARE THE COMMUNICATION PRIORITIES?

The need for a PMP 450 solution may be directly tied to a specific plan, priority, goal or initiative. One way to identify these initiatives is to ask the relative priority of the following areas of the com-munications network (critical, high, medium, low priority or no priority). Indicating a priority in any of these areas can open a discussion about managing the network and, ultimately, the need for a PMP 450 solution.

Typical Communication Priorities

5.0 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. WHAT SPEEDS CAN THE PMP 450 DELIVER?

Each AP can deliver up to 125 Mbps throughput. One six-sector ring of APs will deliver over 700

Mbps on a tower. When you stack two rings, the system can deliver more than 1 Gbps of through-

put from a single tower location.

2. WHAT ANTENNA CONFIGURATIONS ARE SUPPORTED BY THE PMP 450?

Cambium provides several high performance sector antenna options that optimize system perfor-

mance and spectral efficiency. Because the AP is connectorized, any regulatory approved anten-

na can be used (such as a 3-sector or Omnidirectional antenna) where required for your coverage

model. You can select the antenna option that best meets your network requirements.

3. CAN A PMP 450 AP BE COLLOCATED ON THE SAME TOWER WITH A 100 SERIES OR 430 SERIES AP?

Yes. PMP 450 APs can co-exist on the same AP tower with any of the following access points:

•PMP100SeriesFSK

•PMP320Series802.16e

•PMP430SeriesOFDM

4. WHAT ARE THE PMP 450 SUBSCRIBER MODULE (SM) CONFIGURATIONS?

The SM comes in two hardware flavors: an integrated patch antenna or a connectorized unit (with

2-male N-Type cables). When using the integrated version, a passive CLIP can be added to the 5

GHz version to provide additional gain, or a passive reflector dish can be used (with any frequen-

cy) to provide even more gain. These antennas extend range or enable higher speeds at the same

range.
