PNGHS Music Department May/June 2019 Workshops In the lead up to the major competitions, we had guest tutors in to work with some of the groups. Jazz band: Phil Boniface ran a workshop with The Swingle Ladies, helping them polish of their pieces for the Manawatu Jazz Festival Competition. Cantatrices: Megan Flint spent a day working with Cantatrices, focusing on their Big Sing repertoire, teaching them a round (which they sang at the Rotary Youth Music Festival the following weekend) and helped voice match the choir. Megan is a past student of PNGHS, holds a Masters degree in Choral Conducting and was recently awarded the Australian Kodaly Certificate by the Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia. Megan is the co-author of Hear Our Voices, a handbook for leaders of children’s choirs and presents the successful national workshop series Primary Gestures for the NZ Choral Federation. She currently sings with Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir (2006-present) and the University of Auckland Chamber Choir (2006- present). Cantatrices will have another workshop with Megan later this month. Workshops

In the lead up to the major competitions, we had guest tutors in to work with some of the groups.

Jazz band: Phil Boniface ran a workshop with The Swingle Ladies, helping them polish of their pieces for the Manawatu Jazz Festival Competition.

Smokefree Rockquest Competition

Four bands from PNGHS entered the Smokefree Rockquest Competition this year.

ELECTRIO: Ella Udy, Cadence Broughton, Kadia Easton, Natalia Waho Nemona: Laila Lees-Galloway, Morgan Brighouse-Revell, Kelsey Osborne, Emma Palmer, Sam Albert Focus.: Nikeysia Butler, Celestial Brown, Rhema Brown, Becky Chard, Anna Prasitdamrong Water Boy: Eden Brown, Lizzy Mackay, Sibel Atalay, Grace Little

Each band played one original song at the heats.

Nemona, Water Boy and Focus. – made the regional finals where they performed two original songs.

On the night, Rhema Brown (Y10) from Focus. won Smokefree Best Vocals and Water Boy won the ZM People’s Choice award and The Stomach Future Recording Artist Prize.

Manawatū Jazz Festival Competition

On a recent cold and wet winter morning at the Regent, the Swingle Ladies, aka Jazz band, performed four pieces, Sir Duke, It’s only a Paper Moon, A Nightengale sang in Berkley Square and I Got Rhythm. Two of these included vocalist Eden Brown (Y11). Congratulations to Grace Little (Y13), who was awarded the Bass award.

The Swingle Ladies and The Harmonettes each performed three songs at the Manawatu Jazz Club concert in May.

Rotary Youth Music Festival

Eden Brown (Y11) and The Harmonettes (Amelia Williamson, Amy-Mae Sorrell and Mahnoor Hussain, all Y13) sang at Joes Garage as part of the festival. They sang contemporary and jazz songs as the audience enjoyed their coffee and brunch.

Over at The Plaza, Cantatrices wowed the crowed with their a cappella singing of some well known tunes, and then they sang some upbeat songs accompanied by guitar and ukulele.

NZCT Chamber Music Contest

Congratulations to the 17 PNGHS students who participated in five groups:

What the Pluck played Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Lady Madonna by Lennon and McCartney and Maaha de Carnival (Black Orpheus) by Luiz Bonfa.

CIX Hands performed two movements from 'Petite Suite' by M D Schmit.

Trio Tristezza played the First movement from Piano Trio No.1 by Mendelssohn. Fermata Thin Air performed J.S. Bach's Air and Gavotte 1 and 2 and Peer Gynt Death of Ase by Grieg. Melisma played The Stirring of the Great Unknown by local composer, Nick Hunter.

Congratulations to:

• Fermata Thin Air: IRMT Trophy for Most Promising Junior group (Lara Harjes, Emma Wang and Christina Jiao, all Y10)

• Melisma: Highly Commended and Best performance of a NZ Composition (Isabel Lu, Malissa Sun and Emma Wang, all Y10)

• Trio Tristezza: Winners (Enshean Lin, Ayoung Cho (both Y12), Nicole Cheng, Y13)

The winning trio now progresses to the Central Regional Final held in Napier.

The Big Sing Competition

With five choirs entered it was a busy day for the 129 students at the Regent. Each choir has a different music focus and a different music director.

Amelia Williamson (Y13) conducted Voices Rechoired. They sang The Rainbow by David N Childs and Penny Lane by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Chrstina Jiao (Y10) accompanied them on the piano.

Celestial Brown (Y12) directed Pasifika Gospel Choir and they performed a Gospel Medley and a Pasifika Medley both arranged and accompanied by Celestial.

Ms Ferry led No Fella A Cappella, and they sang two popular songs Lullaby (Goodnight my Angel) by Billy Joel and Wake Me Up by Avicii and Aloe Blacc.

Miss Joe directed Zing and they performed Lady Gaga’s hit Shallow and a lively Ghanaian Folk Song - Pete, Pete! Lizzy Mackay (Y11) was their accompanist, along with four students playing percussion instruments.

Mrs Smith conducted Cantatrices. They sang Psalm 129 written for them by local composer Graham Parsons, She Walks in Beauty by Sally Whitwell and concluded their programme with Hei Igazitsad, a popular Hungarian folk song. Miss Joe was their accompanist.

Some students also performed in Amici, the guest choir made of students from various schools in Palmerston North.

Congratulations to:

• Pasifika Gospel Choir led by Celestial Brown (Y12) who received the Spirit of the Festival Youth Ambassadors award.

• Celestial won the Renaissance Singers award for outstanding student support to a choir, for the second year in a row.

• No Fella A Cappella received a Commended in the non-competitive section • Cantatrices won the Shona and Barry Old Award for the best overall performance at

the Festival, they also received The Judith and Guy Donaldson Award for the best performance of a NZ work award and were awarded Highly commended.

• Mrs Smith also received the Conductor’s Professional Development award.

Cantatrices is now eligible for selection to the national finale in August which is held in Dunedin.
