Who am I?
What is “Reverse Classroom”?• Other names: flipped classroom/teaching, reverse
teaching/instruction, backwards classroom, switched classrooms
• Big names in flipping: • Aaron Sams and Jonathan Bergmann (Woodland Park Colorado)• Khan Academy
• Traditional definition: “Class work” is done at home and “homework” is done in class• It IS NOT about replacing teachers with videos• It IS about increasing personalized contact time between teachers
and students (and other students too)• “Sage on the stage” vs. “guide on the side”
What is the rationale behind flipping?• Sams and Bergman: frustration with students leaving early or
being absent• Students missed lectures and couldn’t do homework• Why were lectures during class and problems at home?
• Lecture is a passive activity, so can be done asynchronously and at a distance
• Problem sets, labs, activities need personal, one-on-one interactions• Students need guidance through problems, which is not available
at home
What has the research shown?
• Umass-Boston Study (White, 2009): College Intro to Biology Course• Test Prep• No effect on lecture attendance• Students used podcasts in an educationally sound manner
• Clintondale HS, Detroit (2011): School-wide• Pre-flipping: +50% failed English and 44% failed math with 736
discipline cases in one semester• Post-flipping: 19% failed English and 13% failed math, with 249
discipline cases in one semester.• Urban San Francisco HS (Musallam, 2010): Advanced Chemistry
Course• Multimedia vodcasting shown to significantly decrease intrinsic load
and increase performance on assessments
How do you fit it into your curriculum?• What levels/grades is it useful for?• What classes is it useful for?• Mastery Method• Methods for ensuring that students watch/listen to lectures
Putting it into Practice
http://usergeneratededucation.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/the-flipped-classroom-model-a-full-picture/
Pros/Cons- Food for Thought• New learning style for students (and teachers)• Students need to actively engage in the lectures• Students need to resist distractions/multitasking • Need a way to hold students accountable for engaging with lectures• Technical Problems/internet availability• Need to use newly freed class time productively• Need time/resources to create vod/podcasts• Determining what lectures should be done in person and which should be done
electronically• Reduces repetitiveness in teaching-load• Issues around grading, since “gradable work” is done in class• Decreases role of parent in “gradable work”• Holistic approach to classes• Instructional challenge of creating short, concise vod/podcasts• Greater time to work individually with students• Potentially boring vod/podcasts
Methods for Creating Screencasts
• Jing and screencast• SnapKast• Tech- Smith's Camtasia Studio• Screen-o-matic
How to Use Jing (TechSmith) and Screencast• Free download: http://www.screencast.com• Free download: http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html• Once it’s downloaded, you will now have your little Jing icon
on the top center of your screen:
