PointsDistance and Midpoint
Coordinate Plane• When graphing points
in the coordinate plane, remember it is (x,y).
• The quadrants are numbered with Roman numerals and go counter clockwise.

x-axis
Distance• The distance formula is used to find the distance
between two points.
• The notation is only telling you to make sure to use the coordinates from the 2nd point, then the coordinates from the 1st point.
• Find the distance between (2,5) and (6,8).
• = 5• Distance is always positive!!
Distance• You try a few!• (5,4) and (3,7)
• (8,-2) and (-5,-9)
• (15,-15) and (-1,0)
• (-5,-5) and (0,0)
𝑑=√(𝑥2−𝑥1)2+¿¿
Midpoint• Midpoint is the point exactly in the middle of two
points. (Just like it sounds!!)• It is the average of the x coordinates and the y
coordinates.• The midpoint is always written as an ordered pair.
• What is the midpoint between (2,5) and (6,1).• x = = • y = • The midpoint is at (4,3).
Midpoint• Your turn!!• (2,4) and (6,8)
• (1,3) and (5,9)
• (-4,-3) and (-8,-5)
• (-5,-5) and (-7,-7)
• (0,0) and (4,8)
