dDear Points Living neighbors,

On Friday, September 27, you won’t catch me meeting with local businesses on behalf of Points Living. You won’t see me getting together with residents to plan future stories, either. Instead, I’m choosing to #SkipWorkDoGood by volunteering in our community – and I invite you to join me.

Last year, N2 Publishing – the national franchiser I work with to create this magazine – held our first company-wide day of service known as N2 Serves Day. Hundreds of my team members across the country chose to #SkipWork-DoGood by volunteering with a local nonprofit. By the end of that single day, we collectively served more than 2,000 hours!

This year, we’re back at it. On September 27, you’ll find me spending time with a local nonprofit – and I hope some of you will serve alongside me. The more participants, the greater our impact. It’s a chance to show Bellevue what the residents of the Points communities and business partners of Points Living can do. Together, let’s give the phrase “all in a day’s work” a new meaning!

If you’re interested in volunteering with me on this day, email me at [email protected]. Remember, the only guilt-free way to play hooky from work is to use that time to give back! And be sure to follow the hashtag #SkipWorkDo-Good on social media on September 27 to see the great things our national team accomplishes that day in communities throughout the U.S.

To find out more about N2 Serves Day and the other ways this magazine helps better our community, check out n2pub.com/impact.

We’d also like to welcome new sponsor’s Heavy Restaurant Group, Tumble Creek, and Lisa Turnure. Heavy Restaurant Group is locally owned and is responsible for bringing us amazing restaurants like Purple Cafe and Wine Bar, Pablo y Pablo, Fiasco, Claret Wine Bar, Meet the Moon, Barrio, The Commons, Lot No. 3 and Heavy Catering. If you haven’t already tried one or more of their restaurants, you are missing out! They are all unique and fantastic! Tumble Creek at Suncadia is a gorgeous community that continues to grow, with new homesites being offered currently! Check out their ad and website for more information. And finally, Lisa Turnure is a top-producing Seattle real estate agent who brings extensive experience to the luxury residential real estate market here. Give her a call if you are looking to buy or sell a home, and you are sure to be impressed!

And, of course, thank you to all of our wonderful spon-sors for enabling this magazine to come to you free each month! We wouldn’t be here without them!

THE DARTMOOR

In 1990, Dori Bower, an Eastside mother and highly respected educator, founded Dartmoor School. Dori believed strongly in each child’s capacity and desire to learn but understood that children had different learning profiles and needs. It was that drive and passion for student-centered learning that inspired Dori to create a school where students could thrive.

Dartmoor focuses on the individual student by pro-viding a respectful, compassionate, and welcoming environment. Dori combined her passion for relating to students with a robust approach to curriculum and instruction: All programs grew out of the assessed needs of the specific student and provided targeted instruction to ensure appropriate challenge and sup-port. Because of its focus on the student, Dartmoor provided a level of flexibility and responsiveness unavailable in more traditional settings.

Dartmoor School was one of the first one-on-one pro-grams of its kind in the Seattle area and, now, almost 30 years later, remains at the vanguard of educational innovation. The school continues to honor Ms. Bow-er’s founding principles of respect and care for all stu-dents, as the school’s expert staff carry forward her method of personalized curriculum and instruction.

Dartmoor School is an accredited, year-round private school offering customized instruction in grades one through 12 at its four campus locations – Bellevue, Bothell, Issaquah, and Seattle.

For more information on its locations and programs, go to www.dartmoorschool.org.

Carries on the Legacy of Founder,

Dori Bower

resident business spotlight

Ambika may be all grown up now, but when she strolled Wetherill Nature Pre-serve in Yarrow Point with her dog as a child, she had big dreams. Her family moved to Yarrow from Dallas when she was in seventh grade. She quickly adapted to life in the Pacific Northwest and soon branched out. She chose Dartmouth College for her undergrad degree and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for business school.

She is full of fun, light and a joy to interview. Her values and beliefs of lov-ing what you do and learning from mistakes is inspiring. “Don’t be afraid to take chances and go for what you want.”

Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur? The entrepreneurial spirit has definitely been instilled in me from a young age. I attended a high school that was a startup in its own way and encour-aged the same kind of critical thinking that starting your own company does. I’ve been taught that there’s always a way to improve something, and I like the challenge of bringing a vision to life.

How did you get the idea for Armoire?I noticed a gap in fashion while attending MIT’s Sloan School of Business. Fashion is a rapidly changing industry but by no means a sustainable one. Being from Seattle, I care deeply about the environment, and knew there was a better

and more convenient way to get dressed. Armoire was created to relieve the pressures the “modern boss lady” feels to help her always dress the part.

How does membership work?We give our members a practical way to have an impractical closet. Simply sign up, share your style preferences, and our unique combination of AI and human stylists curates a selection of high-end clothing options. Instead of scrolling through endless pages of garments, members see things selected for them based on their own preferences, can rent them for however long they like, and can exchange them when ready for new clothes. We take care of shipping and dry cleaning to make the process as streamlined for our busy members as we can.

What are the top three reasons Armoire makes sense?1. Renting allows our members access to a personal-

ized selection of new items to try every month for a fixed cost – cleaning included. The modern profes-

sional woman is busy, and the service saves her time and money so she can focus on what’s most important to her while feeling her best in what she’s wearing.

2. Fashion is one of the most polluting industries due to high demand, so shar-ing clothes is a more sustainable option. Fast fashion has drastically changed the way that the fashion industry operates as a whole, pushing trends more quickly while producing lower-quality garments, so rental offers a solution without the detrimental effect to our planet.

3. Armoire’s boutique enables members to “shop” without worrying about the price tag. Tagless shopping removes standard retail stressors and lets our members truly find (and go home with) the item they love and feel most excited in. There’s no commitment to what members bring home, so women are able to try things they normally wouldn’t pick out or can indulge in things they know they’ll only wear once.

How many clients do you currently serve? Our client base has been growing double digits month-over-month. We serve thousands of clients and ship all across the U.S.

How long have you had your store in Seattle? We recently moved into a new space in Pioneer Square that is seven times the size of our old office space in Capitol Hill. We have been here a month and are

settling in nicely. Our new boutique space provides members with a great opportunity to come in for themselves (or with friends) and get help from a stylist in person or attend events that we host. It’s exciting to have our warehouse operations, offices, and boutique/event space all under one roof.

What are your long-term goals? We’re focused on growing our community and sharing Armoire with more boss ladies across the country. We hope to replicate our boutique space and bring the digital experience offline outside of Seattle. Our model proves that brick and mortar isn’t dead yet – people love coming in for style parties or networking events, and it gives us a way to give back to the community of strong women that helped us grow.

Thank you for helping to keep wardrobes simple and exciting!

To learn more or sign up for a membership, go to www.armoire.style.

YOUR DREAMS ARE JUST

A MOONSHOT AWAY“What dream do you have that’s so big, others call it impossible?”

Buzz Aldrin landed with Neil Armstrong the second time he went to the moon.Naveen poses with Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

Naveen talks with Admiral Bill Owens, Vice President of Joint Chiefs of Staff. Bill is a four-star admiral and was CEO of Teledesic, started by Bill Gates and Craig McCaw.

It seemed impossible to land on the moon — until we did it. It may seem impossible to acquire an abundance of land, medicine, education, creative freedom, clean water, energy — until we do it. The limits to what our spe-cies can achieve are bound only by our imaginations.

Internationally renowned entrepreneur, thought leader, and Medina resident Naveen Jain created Moonshots Podcast to bring you living examples of people who are solving the world’s biggest challenges through innovation. His goal is to help you develop your passion, pursue your purpose, and make your mark on the world.

Naveen is the founder of Moon Express, World Innovation Institute, InfoSpace, iNome, Tal-entWise, Intelius and Viome. Naveen sees beyond the current business and technological landscape, creating companies that make a true impact. He and his guests will inspire you to do the same — and “show you how.”

If you have a moonshot and would like to share it with the world and be on Naveen’s podcast, please email [email protected], and a few lucky winners will be invited.

THIS FALL BAM PRESENTSRobert Williams: THE FATHER OF EXPONENTIAL IMAGINATION

Step inside the mind of one of the original outlaws of contemporary American art this fall at Bellevue Arts Museum. Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination, which opens October 4, features 30 recent oil paintings and two major sculptures from Los Angeles-based artist Robert Williams.

Williams is best known as the originator of lowbrow feral art or, as he describes it, art that has had to “raise itself out of the wilderness.” His intricately detailed, large-scale paintings combine his mastery of classical oil painting with the ethos and aesthetics of underground comics and the 1960s hot-rod scene, in which he began his career.

While many of Williams’ art-world contemporaries have focused on abstraction and conceptualism, Williams remains committed to creating works that emphasize imagination, craftsmanship, and pure visual interest. As he explains in his “Rubberneck Man-ifesto”: “The purest form of art is to give way to simple visual interest. To look at what you find yourself driven to see.”

The resulting works draw viewers in through their use of color, imaginative-yet-realistically rendered imagery, and demonstra-tion of Williams’ artistic skill. Williams’ paintings have also made him a hero among alternative and underground artists, both for their subject matter and the case they present for the return of craft, observation, and technical skill in painting.

Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination is on view at Bellevue Arts Museum from October 4, 2019-February 2, 2020.

pickleballtournament 2019

NEIGHBORHOOD CULTURE

Written By: Benjamin Tobin, Resident Junior Writer

The 2019 pickleball tournament was one to remember. The annual tourna-ment has become an exciting part of the Points’ culture. Each year, the most talented pickle-ballers on the Points come together to compete in an epic showdown where competitors display great perseverance, wit, athleticism, and sportsmanship. One fun aspect of the tournament is that it brings pick-le-ballers of all ages and genders together to play.

Someone who is deserving of respect and attention for launching the tourna-ment is Yarrow resident Dave Feller. Feller is the commissioner and organizer of the tournament, and he does all the behind-the-scenes work. Nicknamed “The Commish,” the tournament would not be possible without him.

“I think the pickleball tournament creates a sense of community by in-cluding players of all ages and skill level into one tournament. It doesn’t separate adults from kids or segregate based on skill! It allows adults to meet the younger generation and vice versa. In addition, the matches bring non-playing community members to the courts to cheer teams on, which provides another venue for community members to interact with one an-other. It’s just a great time with your neighbors,” Feller says.

The competition is unique to the Points and can’t be replicated anywhere else in the world. The tournament was originally started by Feller’s good friend Charley Berry in 1977. However, the tournament became defunct soon after. Feller took initiative in 2011 to reboot the tournament in the Points, thus creating a beloved tradition.

“My favorite part is observing players prior to their match. While the games are friendly, fun, and respectful, there is a ‘nervous’ look about most players. The players are keenly aware that it’s single-elimination, and they have to play their best,” Feller continues. “So while it’s just a fun tourney, players are all in and are striving to win. My other favorite part of the tourney is when the com-munity comes together and cheers teams on to victory. Semi-finals and finals are a must-watch event on the afternoon of July 3. It’s great pickleball, highly competitive, and fabulous cheering from the spectators.”

While the final few matches are played at Yarrow Point Town Hall, early rounds are played at the homes of Yarrow Point residents who graciously volunteer their courts. The tournament is a great way to get to know neighbors in the community.

Since the tournament began nearly a decade ago, it has been dominated by some skilled adult players. While kids participated in the competition, they were nearly always bested by adult teams. However, the 2019 tournament marked a turning point in the age groups represented in the tournament finals. This year, history was made when all four players in the finals were kids.

In the first semi-final, Colby Dash and Ben Tobin faced seasoned veterans, Tom Cusick and Jeff Pellegrini, with Dash and Tobin coming out as the winners. In the second semi-final, Brady Kim and Dylan Bear defeated experienced pickle-ballers Keith Brehm and Rick Dylan in a three-set battle. This matched Dash and Tobin against Kim and Bear in the final. The 17-year-olds battled for the championship trophy and also for bragging rights. The game was as much a mind game as it was physical. In the end, Kim and Bear were crowned champi-ons of the 2019 pickleball tournament.

This unique and friendly competition brings smiles and joy to those on the Points. Without a doubt, residents are eagerly awaiting next year’s tournament.

Friendly SIMULATED GOLF COMPETITION at Pacific Northwest Golf Centers in Redmond

Written by: Jenny Hart DanowskiPhotos by: Cecile Miller Photography

We recently joined several of our neighbors at Pacific Northwest Golf Centers in Redmond, where owner Jeff Clay and his staff showed us all the cool golf-performance technology they offer to make you the next Phil Mickelson, or at least to improve your handicap! This 5,000-square-foot facility houses several TrackMan 4 Golf Simulators for practicing your game, playing simulated courses all over the world, or essentially playing giant golf video games, as well as a 1,000-square-foot putting green for practicing your short game.

For those who don’t know, the TrackMan 4 is the golf radar system most widely used by tour pros around the world be-cause it’s portable and is the most accurate system out there. “TrackMan 4 allows us to track over 30 metrics pertaining to what the club is doing, what the golf ball is doing, and more,” says Jeff. “It also integrates video with every single shot. Using the video, the statistical data, and the visual data that it provides makes a lot of sense when trying to explain things to clients and to instruct them,” he adds.

Unlike practicing at a driving range or on a course, TrackMan 4 allows you to go back and look at every shot you hit, compare multiple shots, and compare shots from different days to see how you are progressing. Every client gets their own account, so all the information is saved and can be accessed at any time via the cloud. “For an analytical person, it’s like Disneyland!” laughs Jeff.

Pacific Northwest Golf Centers also features the BodiTrak Golf System, which is the first portable and affordable mat to re-cord balance distribution information and Center of Pressure (CoP) during the golf swing. “It shows you exactly where your weight is in real time and ties in seamlessly with the Track-Man data,” explains Jeff. “Clients think they are doing one thing until they see the video and the BodiTrak data, and find that their weight isn’t where they thought it was,” he adds.

Our guests loved trying out the various features of both the TrackMan 4 and BodiTrak systems, participating in a few mini lessons, and playing ping pong and corn hole while mingling with one another. Guests also enjoyed sipping Scuttlebutt Brewing Company’s super light and drinkable Ten Weeks of Sunshine India Pale Ale and Northwest Cellars’ wines. Thanks to Jeff and his staff for a memorable evening!

Apple filling ingredients:½ cup brown sugar½ cup granulated sugar¼ cup all-purpose flour1 teaspoon nutmeg2 large Granny Smith apples (chopped)

Applesauce cake batter ingredients:2 cups granulated sugar½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter½ cup canola oil4 eggs4 cups all-purpose flour2 teaspoons baking soda2 teaspoons ground cinnamon2 teaspoons nutmeg1 teaspoon salt3 cups no-sugar-added applesauce2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste

Frosting ingredients:2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter, softened4 to 5 ounces unpasteurized goat cheese4 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste½ teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line cupcake pans with cupcake liners

(for a total of 40 cupcakes).

2. For the apple filling: In a medium bowl, mix together the brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and chopped apples. Set aside.

3. For the applesauce cake batter: Cream together the granulated sugar, butter, and oil in a large bowl. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt, and beat until well mixed. Add applesauce and vanilla, and mix well.

4. Fill the liners one-third full with the applesauce cake batter. Add some of the apple filling on top, and then add additional applesauce cake batter to cover the apple filling (the liners should be two-thirds full). Bake until an inserted toothpick comes out clean (about 16-19 minutes). Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before frosting.

5. For the frosting: In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream together the butter and goat cheese until light and smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar 1 cup at a time, and mix until fully incorporated. Add the vanilla bean paste and cinnamon, and beat on high until light and fluffy.

6. Using a piping bag, pipe the frosting on the cupcakes, and garnish as you wish.

eetSofie Broznowski

Mission: Save The OrcasWritten by: June Grayuski

Did you know that Orcas in the Puget Sound could go extinct within our lifetime? This young lady is helping to ensure it’s not happening on her watch.

Meet resident Sofie Broznowski. She is a student at Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment, studying environmental science with a marine ecology emphasis and minoring in Salish sea studies. She loves tide pooling, free diving, hiking, rafting, and skiing, and currently volunteers with the North Sound Stewards doing citizen science research, such as surveying sea-star numbers and monitoring ocean acidification.

When asked why she was so passionate about ocean health, and especially the Orcas, she so eloquently explained.

“I have been passionate and inspired by the wonders of the Salish sea my entire life. The Orcas hold a special place in my heart, as they have an intricate and complex culture that we humans are just starting to wrap our heads around. Each pod has a unique dialect and speech pattern, and they have names for each other. They are extremely social and form friendships that last a lifetime, just like us. They have family reunions with 300-plus members. We are just beginning to research their lifestyle and language, and losing them would be heart-wrenching. Currently, there are only 77 south-ern-resident Orcas left in the Salish sea, and they are teetering on the brink of extinction. They have the right to live happily, yet currently, they are starving to death, and all of their pain is our fault. Thus, we must fix these issues, starting with the lack of salmon.

“Since the four lower Snake River dams were installed in the ‘60s and ‘70s, the Chinook salmon population has decreased by 90 percent. The lack of salmon is especially troublesome because the southern residents’ diet is 80 percent Chinook salmon. Not only that, but the mothers have carcinogens, PCB’s, and many other chemicals stored in their fat cells from the decades of pollution in the Salish sea. When they don’t have food, they metabolize these fats, and the chemicals go directly into the milk for their babies, poisoning them right from the start. Because of this, the calf mortality rate is currently at 50 percent. This is why I’m so passionate about the southern-resident Orcas, because they are magnificent creatures in their own right, and deserve to thrive and live happily and healthily.”

Sofie has a lot of tenacity. She got involved with Environment Washington on a whim, after meeting them on campus one day. She interviewed immediately, got the job on the spot, and never looked back. “I work for Environment Washington, not the Environment Washington Center. The center is an organization that does research and education, not advocacy. I work in the advocacy program of Environment Washington, which means that I am the person going door to door working to build people power and the concrete support that we use to show our senators, elected representatives, and other organi-zations how critically important environmental issues are to the people of Washington,” she explains.

Sofie’s plans are to go to graduate school and then do deep-sea research and conservation. Good luck, Sofie! Thank you for help-ing to make the world a better place. We support you.

For more information on supporting Sofie’s cause, go to https://environmentwashington.org/.

The best way to help us save the Orcas is by becoming a mem-ber of Environment Washington and joining our monthly giv-ing program. The more members we have, the more political power we possess. In addition, signing our petition is critical to tell our senators that we want the four dams on the lower Snake River removed. Once these dams are removed, not only will the salmon and Orca populations be restored, but the entire ecosystem will be exceedingly healthier.

Medina and Clyde Hill Come TogetherTO CELEBRATE 84TH STREET CORRIDOR RIBBON CUTTING

Did you know this $3-million project was funded without the need for any special levies or bonds? The new beautiful street-scape was essentially funded evenly by the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (via a grant to the two cities),

GardenWhen I think of cruises, I envision enormous cruise ships that hold thousands of people. So when a representative from the French cruise line, Ponant Yacht Cruises and Expeditions, contacted us about sponsoring the “Gardens of the British Isles” cruise, I was ready to reject the idea. When I learned that this is a “small ship” cruise on the new ship, “Le Dumont-d’Urville” (it will launch this year), with only approximately 150 passengers and a crew of 111, it got my attention. Then, when I saw that two of the six garden tours include the world-famous gardens of Great Dixter in East Sussex and Tresco Abbey on the Scilly Islands, I was sold.

Another one of the stops will be on the Isle of Wight where we will tour the Italian Renaissance country villa and garden of Queen Victo-ria, designed by Prince Albert and recently featured in the movie The Favorite and in the PBS mini-series Victoria. In addition to the iconic gardens along the southern coast of England, there will be views of wild creeks to long sand or pebble beaches, lush hills, charming fish-ing villages, and steep cliffs sculpted by the wind and sea.

Written by: Nita-Jo Rountree

On-board entertainment will include musical performanc-es by two Celtic bands and other music, singing, and even dancing. Additionally, all meals aboard the ship are prepared by French chefs in their two restaurants, and the cruise fare includes an open bar, WiFi, gratuities, and 24-hour room service.

Airport transfers on the main arrival and departure days are included, and you only have to unpack and pack once! All this plus 10 percent of your cruise fare is a tax-deductible dona-tion to the Bellevue Botanical Garden.

GETTING TO KNOW ROCIOPicture this: I’m sitting in the bar at Overlake Golf Club for a girls’ get-together that Medina resident, Piper Hanson, and her sister, Lisa Armintrout, put together to introduce me to some of the ladies in the area. I was seated next to a beautiful woman named Rocio, with flawless style and a charming Peruvian accent. Little did I know at the time that this woman with the kindest heart would soon become someone I greatly admired.

Rocio is clearly a savvy business owner. Though, first and foremost, she is a devoted wife and mom to three incredible children. One of her children, Lucia, tutors the neighborhood kids in math and Spanish. My kids love it when she comes over to tutor them. Her daughter’s kindness and the genuine way she works with younger kids isn’t a huge surprise, as the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, right?

It was always Rocio’s dream to create a business that would bring a piece of Peru to the States while introducing others to her love of alpaca products. It was equally important that she use this business as an opportunity to benefit and empower young women in her home country. The day arrived when Rocio decided it was the right time to make it happen. With a resounding, “Go do it, Mom!” from her family, she launched her business, Chio. Her business is taking off, and quickly.

Chio designs and produces wonderful textiles and accessories using natural and sustainable characteristics of one of the finest animal fibers in the world, alpaca. Its success is in in the products created. Everything is top-notch quality and so luxurious. Definitely splurge-worthy!

The slippers ... I so want them. The teddy bear, Pablo, named after her son, is so soft and special I would put it on my living room couch. The wraps feel incredible to the touch. I wanted to wrap myself in one and wear it home.

I asked Rocio, “Why alpaca?” She told me that growing up in Peru, she and her family always wore alpaca. She was always surrounded by Peruvian-made textiles crafted out of raw materi-als like alpaca. In her business, she wanted to create something special and unique using those amazing elements. All of Chio’s products are manufactured in Peru by local artisans who contin-ue the pre-Incan tradition of working alpaca fibers.

I learned from Rocío, when we sat down at Queen Bee for our inter-view, that alpaca fur adjusts to your temperature. Huh? Yes. Alpaca fiber has great natural attributes. It is extremely soft, durable, light-weight, and naturally hypoallergenic. It acts as a natural thermostat by using microscopic air pockets to trap body heat in cooler tem-

peratures and release heat in warmer weather. I always travel with a wrap, and I think this one would be perfect for the plane. Everyone knows the airplane hot, cold, hot, cold dance!

Here is the very best part about Chio, though. It donates 10 percent of proceeds back to girls’ education in Peru. Chio supports The Sacred Valley Project, which provides boarding and supplementary education for girls from low-income families in remote areas of the Andes so they can continue and complete their secondary education.

It was beautiful to hear Rocio recount her recent trip to Cuzco, Peru, where, along with her children, she got to meet the girls that are benefiting from her work. She told me that after meeting them and getting to know them, she feels a huge sense of respon-sibility to really help them. They are relying on her!

When Rocio talks about her business — the products from her country and the girls’ lives she is helping change — a big smile spreads across her face. There is no doubt that this is close to her heart. Her passion is evident. I’m so glad she took a risk and decided to launch Chio! Way to go, Rocio!

You can indulge yourself in the quality and luxury of her products at www.chio.style. The slippers and Pablo, the teddy bear, will be available online in September 2019. You can also find her prod-ucts at IVY Gift & Home (Kirkland, WA), Hedge & Vine (Bellevue, WA), or The Picket Fence (Sun Valley, ID).

In addition to the program, the Bellevue School District will be increasing their Mental Health Assistance Team (MHAT) capacity. The MHAT identifies students with mental-health needs and ex-pands access to evidence-based services delivered by highly trained and skilled BSD staff, including mental-health professionals. The team evaluates students using a validated universal evaluation tool that includes important indicators of student well-being (absences, grades, discipline, referrals, etc.). The MHAT aims to increase use of mental-health evidence-based practices among Bellevue School District’s school counselors, social workers, and psychologists.

“At the Bellevue School District, we are committed to the well-being of each

and every student, which includes access to mental health support

and resources,” says Dr. Ivan Duran, Bellevue School District Superintendent. “We are ap-preciative of the partnership with the Bellevue Schools Foundation in helping to deliver the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program in all of our secondary schools. En-

suring our students have what they need to succeed requires

our entire community to support our efforts.”

The Bellevue Schools Foundation has long supported the district’s efforts to

improve student well-being. You can help them continue to lead the way in ensuring that our students have the resources they need to thrive in school and in life.

For more information on how to support the Bellevue Schools Foundation, please visit BellevueSchoolsFoundation.org.

BELLEVUE SCHOOLS FOUNDATION F o c u s :   M e n t a l H e a l t h

Back-to-school time brings excitement about school supplies, new clothes, and football games, but for many students it also brings anxiety and depression. Each year, a number of students struggle with new classrooms, shifting routines, and raised expectations. The Bellevue School District and Bellevue Schools Foundation are partnering to make sure that every student in Bellevue gets off to school on the right foot.

The Bellevue Schools Foundation and its supporters have always been committed to funding the most effective and innovative district-wide programming available, such as the DreamBox Math Program and integrated Computer Science curriculum. The foun-dation’s work is one of the reasons the Bellevue School District is viewed as a model for top-quality, public education. From progress in early learning to innovative college counseling tools, they have pushed the envelope in many facets of our students’ educa-tion. Most recently, the founda-tion has committed to funding the Signs of Suicide (SOS) social-emotional wellness and anti-suicide program throughout the Bellevue School District.

This year, the Bellevue Schools Foundation seeks to raise an additional $179,000 to implement the Signs of Suicide curriculum and training to all seventh-, eighth-, and 10th-graders. The program will allow the district to identify, assess, and support all students with social-emotional struggles.

Bellevue Schools Foundation President-elect Arthur Emery says, “…with our donors’ help and our district’s support, we believe we can conquer the final frontier in education: student social-emo-tional health and well-being. And none too soon, as student levels of anxiety and depression are currently at all-time highs and show no signs of abating without our thoughtful intervention. On average, 20 percent of students will demonstrate some form of mental health disorder during their school years.”

Signs of Suicide is a school-wide, evidence-based suicide preven-tion program that consists of a curriculum, universal screener, and evaluation tools. The goal of this important program is to de-crease suicide and suicide attempts by increasing knowledge and changing attitudes about depression, mental health, and suicide.

Fall Fun & PhilanthropyPOSH Party Gives BackThe POSH Party Trend Show, one of Bellevue’s most stylish evenings, is com-ing up on Friday, September 27! POSH Party is a girls’ night out featuring a run-way show that highlights the must-have fall fashion and beauty trends.

The best part? The Bellevue Collec-tion and the Kemper Freeman family have once again chosen to donate 100 percent of ticket sales to Bel-levue LifeSpring! That means that when you purchase a ticket to the fashion show, you are also invest-ing in your own karma bank. Funds raised from ticket sales go directly to Bellevue LifeSpring programs that serve children and families liv-ing in poverty here in Bellevue.

Bellevue is home to a diverse group of people, and it’s easy to overlook the fact

that there is need in our own backyard. Currently, one in five children in Bel-levue is living in poverty. The support of The Bellevue Collection, the Kemper Freeman family, and Points neighbors has been essential to serving these chil-dren and fulfilling Bellevue LifeSpring’s mission. Last year alone, POSH Party raised an amazing $50,000 to support Bellevue LifeSpring programs.

Thanks to Bellevue Collection and POSH Party attendees, Bellevue LifeSpring is able to provide immediate support to children and families in need and equip them with the foundation for successful, self-sufficient futures. The Kemper Freeman family’s generosity demonstrates their continued dedica-tion to serving others and their invest-ment in creating a thriving Bellevue community for all of its residents.
