Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into a natural environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat, or light. Pollutants, the elements of pollution, can be foreign substances or energies, or naturally occurring; when naturally occurring, they are considered contaminants when they exceed natural levels. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution. The Blacksmith Institute issues annually a list of the world's worst polluted places. In the 2007 issues the ten top nominees are located in Azerbaijan, China, India, Peru, Russia, Ukraine, and Zambia.

AIR POLLUTIONOne of the serious disadvantages of the industrial revolution is the increased pollution . The gases and fumes released by factories and vehicles pollute the air. Combustion of fossil fuels, forest fires and volcanic eruptions are other major sources of air pollution. The chlorofluorocarbons [CFCs] damage the ozone layer in the atmosphere by the action of the sunlight on the oxygen molecules. CFCs have led to the thinning of the ozone layer.

ACID RAINRain with high acidic content is called acid rain. It is a

mixture of harmful gases such as HNO3 & H2SO4.

Acid rain has many harmful effects. It causes damage to marble structure & also promotes corrosion of metallic structure.

WATER POLLUTION Addition of unwanted

wastes in the water bodies which can change their characteristics is called water pollution.

Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture leads to water pollution.

The comic beside shows how marine animals are affected by water pollution.

• The major cause of water pollution is the discharge of industrials influents such as oil, grease, resins, etc. into the water bodies such as lakes, seas, oceans and ponds.

• More than 5000 animals die every month due to severe water pollution.

LAND POLLUTION

• Land pollution is a term use to describe how land is getting exploited day by day.

• Wastes of different types, and fertilizers and pesticides have exploited the land severely.

• The top right diagram beside shows that 50% (brown) of land is polluted.

• The above diagram shows sources of land pollution.

1) Atmospheric deposition and acid rain.

2) Direct decomposition from industry and agriculture.

3) Heavy metals can enter food chain from soil.

NOISE POLLUTION• Noise pollution (or

environmental noise) is displeasing human, animal or machine-created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. The word noise comes from the Latin word nauseas, meaning seasickness.

• The source of most outdoor noise worldwide is mainly construction and transportation systems, including motor vehicle noise, aircraft noise and rail noise. Poor urban planning may give rise to noise pollution, since side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in the residential area.

CONCLUSION

• Thus we have seen how earth is getting exploited by pollution.

• So its our responsibility to save our earth.
