Nell granted bail in High CourtAn urgent bail application brought before the Limpopo High Court on Wednesday has resulted in former business tycoon Jacques Nell being released from prison.

Nell was arrested by the Hawks on 19 February after two charges of fraud were laid

against him by Absa Bank. Following his last appearance in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court Judge Janine Ungerer denied his bail due to various rea-sons including Nell being a flight risk in the eyes of the court. R4,5m fest a disasterFrom page 1In calls received from numerous irate home owners and occupants of residences in close proximity to Polokwane Cricket Club, where the gospel and jazz festivals were held on Friday and Saturday evenings, outrage was ex-pressed over noise reaching unbearable peak levels and the fact that the events organisers blatantly disregarded set curfews. First thing on Monday information was received that a representative of the board of a retirement village in South Street had already commenced with a process to raise the issue with Polok-wane Municipality. It was seen as a matter of urgency following a weekend of sleepless nights for residents in the area, caused by festival programmes reportedly continuing until approximately 02:00 and 04:00 on Sunday and Monday respectively.

The festival programme initially aimed at incorporating different events under a larger umbrella. On Saturday, however, it was learnt that last week’s Miss Mapungubwe pageant was apparently cancelled. A craft exhibition for traders, booked to spend the entire week par-ticipating in the festival, seemingly did not at-tract the necessary visitor figures as intended. From the photos taken at the exhibition at SABC Park on Saturday it was evident that even the Department of Sport, Arts and Cul-ture’s own stand was stripped of any activity. During random checks on the same venue last Wednesday and Friday no visitors to the venue were observed either. A trader who wished to

remain anonymous said they were dissatisfied with the turn-out. The only visitors who passed through constituted participants in the street parade that announced the commencement of the festival last Monday, as well as a small group of visitors who were mainly students from higher learning institutions nearby, the source stressed.

Polokwane Observer’s journalist at-tending the music performances reported that both events started about three hours late and when questioning the delays, he was informed by a departmental official that the artists in the line-up could not perform to insufficient numbers.

To a question about the municipality under-taking not to allow recurring noise pollution during the hosting of the previous festival, Polokwane Municipality Communications and Marketing Manager Tidimalo Chuene respond-ed by saying letters were written to residents and stakeholders in close proximity to the festival venue by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. “The volume of the sound system was taken down in the evening (to) avoid any discomfort to residents.”

Following up on the undertaking by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to issue letters to residents and stakeholders before the festival as referred to in the comment by the municipality, a local resident denied getting any written warning pertaining to noise levels throughout the duration of the gospel and jazz festivals. Noise levels already skyrocketed on

The team of administrators appointed in terms of Section 100(1)(b) of the Consti-tution to run Limpopo’s affairs will remain

in the province until June when, according to Chief Administrator Monde Tom, the reigns will be handed back to the provincial government that will come into power following the general elections to be held on 7 May.

Despite this fact being widely known since last Thursday Gavin Pratt Head of the Provin-cial Treasury Department on Monday claimed to be unaware thereof.

It was generally expected that the adminis-tration would be lifted by the end of March yet acting Performance Monitoring and Evalua-tion Minister, Angie Motsekga on Thursday reportedly confirmed that the intervention in Limpopo will be maintained until June when the situation will be reviewed.

She is reported to have said that the intervention will ensure continuity and that

the improvements in the province’s financial position and service delivery in social services and other sectors are maintained. Motshekga addressed the press after a cabinet meeting held in Pretoria on Wednesday.

The departments of Treasury, Education, Roads and Transport, Public Works and Health and Social Development were placed under administration in December 2011.

Asked for comment regarding this issue, President of the Polokwane Chamber of Business, Percy Mongalo said that as long as there is fairness in the awarding of tenders and suppliers are paid within 30 days, the business community will be happy. “Compli-ance with legislation is what we want,” he said.

Roads and Transport MEC Lehlogonolo Masoga on Tuesday, during his departments awards ceremony, said they came out best performing department in the ranks of those under administration. He also stated said that funds have already been allocated to new road projects for the new financial year.

Friday when sound checks were being done, he said. According to him the intensity of the sound triggered car alarms which contributed to the problem. In conclusion he stressed that they have been addressing the issue with the local municipality for years now, but have never received assistance.

After numerous attempts to obtain clarity on the various issues, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture spokesperson Mabakane Mangena undertook to provide a consolidated response upon consultation with departmental officials involved in the operations soonest.

>> Barend Vorster appears again on alleged charges pertain-ing to the sexual offences act>> Trial to continue again on 13 MayKESHIA J V RENSBURG>> [email protected]

Infamous local psychiatrist Barend Vorster who since 2009 has been making headlines appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate’s

Court on Monday on charges relating to the al-leged sexual assault of minors who were also his patients. His case was postponed until 13 May.

In November of 2009 Vorster was accused by some of his patients of over-prescribing cer-tain medication for them. They also laid formal complaints against him at the Medical Profes-sions Board of South Africa who responded by saying that they have no jurisdiction over Vorster who had then already been scrapped from the roll. They could well confirm though that there had been a case of over-prescribing opened against Vorster.

Not long after the initial complaints regard-ing Vorster started streaming in, he was arrested on 25 November 2010 on charges of the alleged sexual assault of minors and was released on bail two days later. Three days later he was again arrested on a charge of possession of an illegal and unlicensed firearm. Vorster has since appeared nearly annually while more allegations arose following the con-fiscation of his computers and patient files by

the Limpopo Police. Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police confirmed Vorster’s recent court appearance and added that it might have taken it’s time but it is now evident that justice is on its due course. “The allegations made against the doctor are of a very serious nature and investigations into these charges are done thoroughly,” he said.

>> Complaints of unhelpful personnel>> Slow turn-around time to be addressedWARREN BLUNT>>[email protected]

Out-patients from the city and other areas in Limpopo are experiencing problems

at the admissions section at the Polokwane Provincial Hospital al-legedly caused by a malfunction to the computer network.

Complaints have also been re-ceived about shoddy service at the filing department situated next to the cashier at the hospital. An out-patient Clive Ncube that had to see a physiotherapist on Monday wanted to obtain his file at the filing department. Ncube was re-ferred from the filing department to the out-patient department, who in turn referred him to the physio department. At the physio department he was referred back

to the filing department, who in turn referred him back to the physio department where they claim the file was still lying after a previous visit.

After being shifted from pillar to post by the unhelpful personnel at all three departments, Ncube finally lost his patience and asked staff to locate his file as he had been given Monday at 12:00 as the day for the physiotherapy ses-sion. The file was finally located after threats by Ncube to take further steps against the uncoop-erative personnel at the hospital. He says if that is what the service is like at a provincial health facil-ity he feels pity for the masses who seek help from public health institutions, especially Polokwane Provincial Hospital.

In another case an out-patient from the Elim area that was re-ferred to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital after suffering a stroke and had to undergo further treat-ment, upon arrival at the hospital was informed that the computer system had crashed and they were unable to assist him. He had

to travel all the way back to Elim and has been unable to get any assistance from the Polokwane Provincial Hospital for the past two months.

Spokesperson for the Depart-ment of Health and Social Devel-opment, Macks Lesufi said the hospital’s computer system has only been down once since the beginning of the year. He added that the computer network is the lifeline of the Health Department and the entire system must be running at all times.

On the matter of patients files, Lesufi said the the Polokwane Pro-vincial Hospital wants to improve the turn-around time processing out-patients.

The department is busy setting up Patient Complaints Manage-ment Committees at hospitals throughout Limpopo to deal with complaints regarding poor service delivery, according to Lesufi.

“At the Polokwane Provincial Hospital we have two officials wearing green reflector jackets that specifically deal with patients’ complaints,” Lesufi said.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo is intending approaching the Public Service Commission to probe pending allegations against Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Mirriam Ramadwa.

DA Limpopo Premier’s candidate Langa Bodlani told Polokwane Ob-server that the party would request a probe by the Public Service Commission into several allegations questioning the conduct of the MEC.

He said her alleged involvement in the recruitment of sport coordinators as part of a departmental process would form part of the basis for the request for a probe.

Further allegations that the MEC appeared to have personally solicited sponsorship for a boxing tournament apparently involving an amount of R510

000 without consulting suspended de-partment head (HOD) Basani Baloyi also posed to be suspect, Langa said.

He stressed that the HOD was the accounting officer in all instances where finances were being dealt with and not the political head, which would have meant alleged contraven-tion of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

Lastly the DA would want to see allegations of the morale of depart-mental officials affected by Ramadwa’s perceived interference in management of affairs to be addressed, Langa stated in conclusion.

Polokwane Observer reported last week that Ramadwa’s head was on the block over several allegations against her, including standing accused of sow-ing tribal divide and being seen alleg-edly interfering in managerial processes within the department.

After a third postponement in the Polo-kwane Magistrate’s Court of the case against him, Sipho Lekgoathloane, the man accused of assaulting Gerrit Venter, is still behind bars and will appear be-fore the court again on charges relating to attempted murder on Monday. A pos-sible trial date will then also be set.

Lekgoathloane was arrested after he allegedly assaulted Gerrit Venter, Sales Manager of Duroc Foods, after Venter on Friday, 7 March reprimanded him for using company property for his personal use. Managing Director of Duroc Foods, Andries Lombaard said that suspect appeared briefly on Monday before having his case postponed to Tuesday. “On Tuesday his bail was denied and the case was once again postponed to Monday when hopefully a trial date will be given,”

Lombaard further added that Ven-

ter’s prognosis is unbelievable after he was discharged from the Intensive Care Unit of Muelmed Medi-Clinic in Pretoria and is now recuperating in a regular ward. “It is an absolute miracle that Gerrit has made the kind of progress he did after suffering such severe injuries, more especially the head injuries.” Lom-baard said his father Dirk Lombaard had just returned from Pretoria where he was visiting the Venters and the rapid turn-around of Gerrit’s health can only be prescribed to faith in God and mira-cles, proving the purpose that Venter’s life is still meant to hold.

If all goes well and his recovery re-mains steady Venter will be discharged from hospital over the coming weekend, while Duroc Foods waits with bated breath upon his return. “We can’t wait for him to come back,” Lombaard said. At the time of going to print, Mohlaka Mashiane from the Westenburg Police was unavailable due to his attendance of a work conference in Lebowakgomo.

Tragedy unfolded on Sunday afternoon when a young mother of two allegedly lost control of her vehicle around a bend

causing her seven-month-old son to be ejected from the vehicle and causing his death.

Polokwane Observer spoke to several eye-witnesses on the scene of the accident in Platinum Street in Ladine and all attested that it was most definitely the worst accident scene any of them had ever seen. “A group of about 20 people were standing outside in the street near where she lost control of the vehicle. We saw her driving by the first time at very high speed and half an hour later she drove by again in her red Chery.” The woman who reached the scene of the accident first explained how she initially thought the car was speeding. The driver reportedly abruptly hit the brakes as she was entering a curve which is supposedly what caused her vehicle to veer out of control, hit the kerb and then flip through the air at least four times. “We found the infant lying approximately 15 m from the point of impact with the kerb,” the woman recalled.

Another eyewitness said she realised there were children in the car when she heard screams as soon as the car started turning over. “We were just across the road from

where she collided with the kerb and rushed to the scene to see if we could assist. There was so much dust that we couldn’t see anything and I almost stepped on the baby’s body lying in the grass next to the road. It was evident that it had died.” The witness added that al-though there was a baby seat in the car there were no visible straps that could have secured the infant.

The mother and three-year old brother of the deceased escaped the accident with minor injuries and are currently recuperating at home with the support of family. Paramedics and em-ployees of towing services were on the scene in a flash. Attempts to get comment from the towing operator charged with removing the damaged vehicle from the scene proved futile.

It has however been confirmed by the paternal grandmother of the deceased that his mother and brother are recuperating well at home. “The mother of the child is cur-rently heavily sedated and unable to speak to anyone,” the woman who requested not to be identified said.

At the time of going to print Mohlaka Mashi-ane from the Westenburg Police was attend-ing a conference in Lebowakgomo, could not get hold of the investigating officer and could therefore not comment except to confirm the accident. Whether any reckless driving case or inquest docket has been opened can only be

President Jacob Zuma on Monday officially opened the R3,5 billion De Hoop Dam in Sekhukhune.

The event was attended by nearly 5 000 community members, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa, Premier Stan Mathabatha, local and district mayors as well as representatives of the contractors.

The dam, measuring 347 m³, is to serve the growing mining sector in the area, two to three million people in the domestic sector in the district and also alleviate the water woes in the province.

The dam will supply potable water to thou-sands of people in the province and will also serve the industry along the Platinum belt.

Zuma is quoted to have said that the bulk distribution system connected to the dam will over

a period of time ensure all the people of this area will be served with an uninterrupted water supply, which is the ultimate goal of government.

“Sekhukhune residents were excluded from access to fresh water under the apartheid regime. Coupled with the fact that the area itself is natu-rally water stressed, government indentified the need for serious infrastructure investment in this region,” Zuma is quoted to have said.

The De Hoop dam, the 13th largest in the country was constructed in the Steelpoort river, a tributary of the Olifants and has two main pur-poses, namely to supply water to towns, industries and poorly serviced rural communities in Sekhuk-hune, Waterberg and Capricorn Districts and secondly to supply water to the mines in the region and thereby unlock its vast mineral riches.

The construction of the dam was one of the projects that fell under the umbrella of the Presi-dential infrastructure Co-ordinating Commission which was established in 2012 to coordinate and

fast-track infrastructure projects.Zuma said previously people in the area had

to walk long distances to get fresh water, and the borehole water was insufficient to meet the demand.

“We have introduced central co-ordination of the work of national, provincial and local govern-ment to take forward major projects such as dams, bridges, schools, hospitals, roads, power stations, universities, further education and training colleges and a host of other project that improve the quality of life and boost economic growth. More than 1000 jobs have been created during the construction period,” Zuma is cited to have said.

Spokesperson for Premier Stan Mathabatha, Kenny Mathivha said De Hoop Dam will come as a relief for the people of Sekhukhune and surrounding areas. “Most of the people strug-gled to access water and this infrastructure will deal with those challenges effectively,” Mathivha said.

Vryheidsfront Plus wys premiers-kandidaat aanYOLANDE NEL>>[email protected]

Mopani worms lead to attempted murderA Limpopo father appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of attempted murder after he allegedly forced his son’s head into a pot of boiling hot water. Naledzani Ndou, 23, appeared briefly in court after reportedly forcing his five-year-old son’s head into a pot of boiling water. He accused his son of stealing Mopani worms he had been cooking.

Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police says the boy was left with severe injuries to his face.

Ndou will appear in court on 26 March for his formal bail application hearing.

Sixteen suspects arrested for murder of pensionerThe Limpopo Police have arrested 15 women and a man in connection with the gruesome murder of an elderly man in Rotterdam Vil-lage, Hlanganani on Wednesday morning. The suspects whose ages range from 18 to 45 are believed to be the ring leaders in the com-munity mobilisation which ended in the killing of Jack Mkhanza Hlongwane (86) whom they accused of the rape and murder of Mamaila Maluleke whose lifeless body was found in the bushes by a member of the community last

week. According to Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police, Hlongwane was stoned and a tyre placed around his neck before it was set alight.

“The suspects fled the scene after which the Police took a few hours to find them and put them behind bars.”

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo Benny Ntlemeza was quoted in a media release stating the Police will not tolerate lawlessness and those who take the law into their own hands. “We will not tolerate so-called mob justice and anyone found on the wrong side of the law. These mobs will be held fully respon-sible for their actions.”

Supreme Court confirms life sentenceThe life sentence handed down to a man accused of raping his 14-year-old daughter in Thohoyandou has been confirmed by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The case was taken to the Supreme High Court on Thursday and the judges sitting on the trial decreed that, based solely on

the trauma and the nightmarish experience his daughter had to live through, the sen-tence would not be overturned or lessened. Hangwani Mulaudzi from the Limpopo Police confirmed the sitting at the Supreme Court and adds that the judges were 100% behind the ruling made in the Limpopo High Court stating that there can be nothing worse than the heinous rape of a child by their father. The unanimous decision made by the panel of three judges included that the court rightfully sentenced the defendant to life in prison and added that the man had no remorse towards his actions and thought ahead of the future of his other two children being under his care, after already putting them through the trauma of having to testify in his first case.

According to the judgement made in the Supreme Court the 55-year-old father of three was sentenced to life imprisonment after raping his then 14-year-old daughter on 7 September 2007. The judgement further reads that the rape was committed while her brother, who was also called to testify in the case, was asleep in the room next door.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) in Limpopo on Tuesday reiterated their call for the removal of

MEC for Education, Dikeledi Magadzi from of-fice when they took to the streets of Polo-kwane in protest against her perceived arrogance and negativity towards educators, the union, the stakeholder and departmental staff.

A memorandum of demand was later handed over to Capricorn District Senior Manager at the Department of Education, Japhta Mametja in the presence of a large crowd of Sadtu members. Sadtu Provincial Secretary Matome Raphasha said the union is per-turbed by the consistent display of arrogance and negative attitude by the MEC. “The MEC has demonstrated anger against the union, the department itself and to herself. It cannot be im-agined where the anger emanated from however it remains undesirable and her attitude is based on this anger,” point 7 of the 20-point demands read.

The other demands include matters of remu-neration for Adult Basic Education, shortage of text books, payment of outstanding allowances, absorption of educators, funding of sporting activities and the withdrawal of letters threatening principals with possible dismissal.

The union made it very clear the harassment of principals must stop. “Further we demand that all sorts of humiliation and disrespect to teachers and principals must stop with immediate effect. In all regards, bashing of the union must stop as it cannot be tolerated. Earlier this year she threatened to remove dismiss the principals of schools that did not perform well. We are say-ing all threats and letters written to Principals about possible dismissal must be immediately withdrawn. If she cannot work with us she must vacate her office. No one has ever stood up to square-off with Sadtu and remained standing,” the memorandum read.

The memorandum further claimed that the department, the administration and manage-

ment of education in the province has collapsed due to a lack of proper leadership.

“We conducted the protest action as the first warning shot, that if necessary steps are not taken to rescue the sinking boat, education of

the children of the working class will be highly compromised and collapsed,” Raphasaha said.Mametja, upon taking receipt of the memoran-dum said they will consider all concerns raised by Sadtu and respond to them.

Town for the big occasion, he explains he has just returned from the Thulamela area where he joined DA Limpopo’s Premier candidate Langa Bodlani for a continuation of the party’s ongoing electioneering drive the past few days. Malatsi has been tasked to engage in constitu-ency work in the Thulamela area where he identified lack of provision of electricity and water as crucial service delivery failures. Dur-ing a gathering at Mandala village on Thurs-day, where he joined DA Limpopo Premier candidate Langa Bodlani, they were confronted with the realities of members of a commu-nity taking their drinking water from a source shared with animals, he mentions. The bottom line, he believes, is that there is a link between poor leadership and service delivery which is aggravated by a lacking solid structure holding the ruling leadership accountable. To Malatsi ethical leadership means having the right peo-ple in the right places.

He believes the winning recipe for the DA in Limpopo is to constantly be in touch with communities across the province. That constant presence, he reiterates, should be maintained. He imagined that the efforts could still be multiplied. Key to DA representatives in their communication with communities is to find a way to connect with them, he reckons. Malatsi refers to the importance of the power of addressing people in their mother tongue in politics often being underestimated.

Asked about predictions where results in the upcoming elections are concerned, he said the DA in Limpopo was aiming for at least 12% of votes. Malatsi indicated it was considered an achievable target based on the work currently being done across the board throughout the province.

Malatsi has just stepped down as spokes-person for Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille and the MEC for Transport and Public Works in the Western Cape, positions that prepared him for the massive task ahead. Being entrusted with such a dominant role to play in the future of South African politics at the age of 28, he believes he is testament to the opportunities the DA creates for the youth of the country.

He is battle ready, also for the expected attacks from opponents who can be seen as vicious if one does not have a thick skin, he

says. Fortunately his strong family support structure makes it worth the while, Malatsi adds.

As a child he was fascinated by sports and specifically the codes of athletics and football. The closest he nowadays gets is long distance running. Later on in life he thought chartered accountancy was the sexiest thing to do, but subsequent inclusion in the DA’s leadership school a few years back served as springboard for shaping his political career. He aptly likens politics to running a race, having to mentally push oneself. “Every race is like a new day.”

What is needed 20 years after the dawn of democracy in the country is a new breed of politicians who have to recognise their own limitations and be willing to work on their weaknesses, he stresses. And armed with that kind of wisdom he symbolically sees his life having come full circle, from serving in the par-ty machinery to taking up the responsibilities entrusted to an incumbent parliamentarian.

Briewe / Letters

In a letter to Haenertsburg Rotary Club Louis Letley writes:

“I am writing to congratulate you and all at Rotary for what is, to my mind, the best open water event my family and I have ever attended. The fact that my daugh-ter won the under 14 girl’s event aside, it was a pleasure and, indeed, a privilege to have been part of the day. My children are both provincial swimmers and we have participated in similar events all around the country including the infamous Midmar Mile. The latter must rate as arguably the worst event in South Africa and, was it not for the fact that it is a required swim for Swimming South Africa, we would not bother to attend. By contrast, your event was run with almost military preci-sion, time schedules were adhered to, the catering was the very best we have ever encountered, the location superb and the people as a whole were fantastic. My only regret was that my 12-year-

old son was not able to swim as he was participating in the Level 3 Nationals in Cape Town. The prizes my daughter received were outstanding and most certainly the very best we have ever en-countered for which we extend our gratitude to you and your sponsors. We will most certainly return next year and if that event is only 50% as good as Saturday, it will still rate tops in the country. You guys have unfortunately created a huge problem for me in as much that my daughter (a real outdoor freak) now wants us to transfer to your beautiful neck of the woods and trust me, if the level of coaching we receive in Bedfordview was available up there, we would move in a split second. I am running out of adjectives so let me close and express, once again, my heartfelt gratitude to all concerned. Please be so kind as to forward this letter to your President and all the com-mittee members involved.”

Home improvement in- and outside

>> Make use of repu-table service providers>> Shop around for competitive pricesWARREN BLUNT>>[email protected]

If your home is looking a bit drab and needs a sprucing up and new-look, the onset of

autumn is a good time to bring in the interior decorator or if you are into doing-it-yourself, to pay a visit to local hardware and spe-cialist home improvement stores.

For new homeowners and those wanting a make-over to their existing home, Polo-kwane Observer shares some tips from experts in the field on general maintenance and on how to make your home look appeal-ing to both visitors and in case you want to sell it sometime in the future. A home is the biggest investment for most average middle-class South Africans and should be properly cared for and also be easy and comfortable to live in. Therefore make informed choices when making improve-ments to your home and use

only the best quality and priced materials when giving your home a make-over.

Trends may change over the years, but quality materials and finishes will have a lasting effect when your home is revamped and it will be wise to shop around for comparisons when it comes down to making the right deci-sions when you want to make changes to your home. No matter if it is the repainting of the inte-rior and exterior, outdoor paving, new tiles, a kitchen or bathroom makeover, or repairs to your existing home, the right choice of product and materials will go a long way in determining the desired effect. Choosing a repu-table and reliable service provider is also an important decision to make if the homeowner cannot do the work themselves.

Whether a homeowner chooses a more rustic look to the modern state-of-the-art finish, quality workmanship must be the number one priority. It does not help to take short-cuts on any improvements and mainte-nance done to your home as any shoddy job could lead to extra costs and in the long run the devaluation of your home.

There is no need to bring in

experts from other provinces as Polokwane has enough reputa-ble builders, interior decorators, tile merchants, paint suppliers, plumbing suppliers, carpet and fabric suppliers and do-it-yourself outlets to cater for every need. They are all experts in their respective fields and will go out of their way to give homeown-ers advice on what products and services will be needed to give your home a fresh new look.

As a homeowner, firstly deter-mine what has to be done to your home according to your needs and budget.

Then go to the necessary supplier and service provider for the correct pricing and specifica-tion of the work that needs to be done. Most importantly, keep an eye as the work progresses and don’t make any payments if the work is not done according to specifications and your satisfac-tion.

Most reliable builders, carpen-ters and other service providers in the building and construction industry will be able to give a guarantee on their workmanship and it will be wise for the home-owner to make use of a reputable company when doing any home improvements.

Keep a level head when doing home improvements

CORNIE ODENDAAL

Wil jy vars kombuiskruie by jou kombuisdeur hê? Wil jy so ‘n groot

Volson of halfskadu. Gebruik vars.

Roosmaryn: Mediterreens (winterreën). Volson.

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) on Tuesday handed over fire and rescue equipment, including a Bell tractor loader

backhoe (TLB) to various municipalities within the district. During a small ceremony held at CDM’s offices in Biccard Street CDM Executive Mayor Lawrence Mapoulo said the municipality will continue telling a good story as the munici-pality will make sure to continuously contribute to the economy.

“We will join hands with Polokwane Munici-pality to take over their emergency services in order to respond quicker to people in the rural

areas within the district. We want to ensure that people in the rural areas receive the same quality services than people in Bendor or Welgelegen,” he said. See story on CDM taking over Polokwane emergency services elsewhere.

The TLB and one fire and rescue bakkie were allocated to Blouberg Municipality while the other three bakkies went to Molemole and Lepelle-Nkumpi. The TLB will assist Blouberg Municipality’s operations and maintenance department while the bakkies will serve as response vehicles during disasters or other emergencies. Mapoulo warned officials that the vehicles should be used for their designated purpose only and added that he intends doing regular checks on the vehicles.

WoF fire fighters undergo annual fitness testsWaRREn Blunt>>[email protected]

In preparation for the 2014 fire season, Work-ing on Fire (WoF) held a Yellow Card Survival Camp at its provincial office in Dalmada, where fire fighters were assessed on their fitness levels and issued with their yellow cards.

The Yellow Card Training Camp is held an-nually to assess if fire fighters are deemed fit enough to perform fire fighting duties at hot spots during the upcoming fire season that is usually from the beginning of June until the start of the rainy season next summer. The General Manager for WoF Limpopo Sam Maepa addressed the fire fighters on the first day of the training camp and stressed that a WoF qualified fire fighter is a person who is physi-cally fit and equipped with the knowledge to fight fires.

Part of the fitness activities included a 10 km route march where fire fighters had to carry all their personal belongings and fire-fighting equipment. The exercise is aimed at exposing the fire fighters to rough terrain and to encourage them to work as a team at all times.

“Everyone who is active on fire-fighting duties will be assessed individually and yellow cards will be issued to those fire fighters who have passed the four-day camp,” instructor and team leader, Kabelo Moleleki told the teams.

Angels Play Pre-School recently turned eight and last Thursday saw this milestone celebrat-ed by learners and educators of the school. The festive programme featured rugby, tug-of-war and, after much expectation the cutting and sharing of the scrumptious birthday cake. Principal Almarie Bester could not attend and in her absence Suzette Soekoe, Receptionist at the school, thanked the parents for their sup-port and assistance over the past eight years. “We have grown so much since 2005 and we thank the parents for their cooperation and their continued support,” she said.

Vanjaar se tema was Around the World in eight classes.

While the total cost of damages caused by recent heavy rains and floods in the province is still being estimated Jack Maeko, Mayor of Lephalale, one of the areas hardest hit by the situation, has extended his gratitude towards entities that helped in every pos-sible way to make the circum-stances bearable for the victims.

Persistent rains forced the municipality to move displaced communities and contract workers to evacuation centres. More than 300 people were left without safe shelter at Thabo Mbeki Township and were evacuated to Thabo Mbeki Community Hall while more than 2 000 community members from Mamojela informal set-tlement and contract workers accommodated along the Mogol River were temporary housed at the Mogol Golf Club.

In total more than 3 000 people from villages, lodges and farms along the two overflowing rivers were relocated to evacu-ation centres. A press release quoted Maeko to have said the displaced people needed basic amenities like food, blankets and toiletries. “The climax of this disaster was on 13 March when Lephalale was completely cut-off from the rest of the country as all the roads to and from the town were closed to motorists and pedestrians.” Premier Stan Mathabatha on the same day visited Lephalale accompanied by MECs Ishmael Kgetepe of

Corporative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs, Lehlogonolo Masoga of Roads and Transport as well as Seaparo Sekoati of Economic Develop-ment, Environment and Tourism but they could not reach the town itself as all roads were closed. The delegation was however able to reach the worst affected area, Thabo Mbeki Township.

“The situation was too com-plex for the local municipality to manage and prompt response from private and public institutions assisted us a lot. Business houses like Eskom and its sub-contractors Roschcon, Murray & Roberts, Alstom, Lephalale Site Services, Exxaro and non-government or-ganisations like the Red Cross and We Can Foundation assisted a lot with the provision of basic human needs as well as total management of the situation,” Maeko stated.

“The municipality doesn’t have boats to take affected people from one place to the other and we want to send a word of ap-preciation to all institutions that provided us with boats to assist in evacuating victims,” he added.

According to the statement Maeko said the municipality is now at the stage of reconstruction and rehabilitation. The municipal-ity called a special council meeting and took a resolution to request for classification of the municipal-ity as a disaster area in terms of the Disaster Management Act of 2002.

“But it is a long process before the area is declared a disaster area nationally as various stake-holders should first provide post disaster reports. But we are very pleased that all spheres of govern-ment are giving our situation the necessary attention and urgency it deserves,” it read.

The VIP Opening night of the newly launched Tooters Restaurant and Cocktail Bar on Thursday evening proves that

the sure-fire combination of style, ambiance, mouth-watering dishes and the perfect drinks to add some heat to the winter nights lying ahead, is definitely still a winning recipe in the Polokwane restaurant industry.

Rising from the ashes after the previous

business failed to outlast the competition this brainchild of Wylde d’Agnel has now taken form and is sure to stand its ground among the bevy of other establishments rearing their heads in the same area. d’Agnel who hails from George’s Valley is the proud owner and explains that one of the reasons for this is the very cosy and elegant atmosphere which is superbly paired with great food and a daily happy hour to ensure no one ever goes hun-gry, thirsty or becomes even slightly bored at Tooters.

Happy hour is in reality more of a happy pe-riod. It outdoes standard cocktail bars by offer-ing all cocktails at R25 each, a whopping 50% discount, between 16:00 and 19:00. An added extra pertaining to the dining experience is a private venue located securely upstairs for private functions like birthdays, anniversaries, conferences and year-end functions. “We will handle the catering and everything else included in the set-up of the venue for you, ensuring you the privacy that is often needed in the business and private industry,” d’Agnel ensures.

Relaxation is a very important part of a good evening out, feeling strained and un-

comfortable in a space is never conducive to building worthy memories. At Tooters the eye-candy most assuredly helps keep the juices of relaxation flowing. A bevy of blond and brunette beauties are sure to catch the eye of visiting patrons, not only for their bubbly personalities which are clearly evident above their looks but also for their neatly put-togeth-er outfits leaving just enough to stimulate the imagination while still being suitable for family dining.

D’Agnel would also like to thank all those in-volved in making the VIP evening such a huge success. These include representatives from Ceramic Tile Market (CTM), Paint Pot, Distell, Bidvest and Katryn Barwise. “A huge thank you to my partner, Stoffel Albertyn and family, Pinny and Sam Korkie.” An array of future events to be held at Tooters Restaurant and Cocktail Bar are still being finalised but at the time of going to press d’Agnel could confirm a weekend sit-down three-course dinner paired with fantastic entertainment by Katryn Barwise will be taking place on 11 April. Dinner will be priced at R150 per person and includes the meal and entertainment. For more information contact d’Agnel on 071 612 3852.

Motorists can pay up to 75 cents per litre more for diesel than they need to in the same city due to the fact that the diesel retail price is not regulated by government to the same extent as petrol. Most motorists are ignorant of this and do not know that they can save more than R50 every time when they fill-up a medium sized vehicle by just shopping around.

The calculation of the fuel price is done by the Central Energy Fund (CEF) on behalf of the Department of Energy (DOE) and is changed on the first Wednesday of every month. The price is determined by a number of factors which include the international petroleum market, spot prices and freight costs to bring the product (those not manufactured by Sasol) to South African ports.

To arrive at the final pump price in the different magisterial district zones, certain domestic transport costs, government imposts, taxes and levies and retail and wholesale mar-gins are added to the landed price. The inland

transport costs are based on whether the fuel is transported by road, rail or pipeline. The final retail price is therefore much lower at the coast - Durban, Port Elizabeth, East London, Mossel Bay and Cape Town. To this point the prices of diesel and petrol are calculated and regulated on the same basis.

In the case of petrol, the wholesale mar-keting margin as well as the retail margin is regulated by government. It is not the case with diesel and retailers can charge what they want from this point, taking in regard their own business strategies.

Polokwane Observer visited a number of filling stations in Polokwane to compare the pump prices for 50ppm diesel and it became apparent that prices ranged from R14,09 to R14,84 per litre.

We spoke to Bakkies Bestbier, manager of Enco Ladanna, where 50 ppm diesel retails at R14,09 per litre. Bestbier explained that their price is informed by the high volumes of fuel that they sell as well as the fact that this business is not affiliated to a specific brand.

How much do you want to pay?

The recent hike in interest rates will inevitably have an impact on affordability and for the average Joe this naturally means thinking twice before purchasing property.

In light of this, Seeff Licensee in the city, Manie Oosthuizen said sellers really have to try and put themselves in the shoes of prospective buyers and also may have to consider revisit-ing their asking prices, especially if a property has been on the market for a while.

“Owners who have invested a lot of hard work and blood, sweat and tears in their prop-erties sometimes get a bit over enthusiastic about their asking prices when deciding to sell, but it is important to note that the only person who really decides what the property is worth in the end is the purchaser,” he was quoted saying in a recent press release.

He added that prospective purchasers today are very clued up regarding prices and they do comprehensive research, visit many show houses and have access to various websites. No purchaser will pay more for a property then what it is worth.

Marketing a property for too long may cause purchasers to lose interest or even convince them that it has some serious flaws or irreparable problems. This could then result in it being sold at a price far below the market value eventually. “Factors such as the neighbourhood, the amount of properties on the market in your area at the moment and average house prices will also impact on the amount you wish to sell your property for.”

Oosthuizen concluded that the most impor-tant thing when determining your selling price is to get a proper valuation done and to speak to an experienced estate agent. “The key is to price your property right from day one if you wish to sell it quickly and at a fair price.”

Don’t overpriceyour property

The venue could easily have been located anywhere else in the world, doubling as space for a befitting and well-curated

homage to one of South Africa’s greatest artists mostly acknowledged for his remarkable talent in international art circles.

Once managing to escape the pulsating city vibes on the other side of the double glass doors granting access to Polokwane Art Museum, the viewer is afforded a glimpse of the late Jackson Hlungwani’s creative es-sence that comes alive among the pieces that partially constitute the legacy he left behind when he passed on in 2010. The dedication to a man hailed for his remarkable self-expression may be long overdue, but the exhibition titled A New Jerusalem is a befitting tribute to the world-renowned free spirit who gave rise to his art from his base in the Elim area. Sadly the legendary Hlungwani was not recognised as much at home as was the case further afield.

The exhibition entailing some 45 of his works, some left unfinished, is the result of a partnership between Polokwane Art Museum, Limpopo Arts and Culture Association (Laca) and MTN SA Foundation, the sole sponsor of the venture initiated about two years ago. The works were sourced from private and institu-tional collections across the country, including the MTN Art Collection. Nessa Leibhammer was bestowed the opportunity to put together the pieces, images and quotes from writings depicting Hlungwani’s life. Moving among the juxtaposed pieces the visitor is conveyed to the world of an artist described as not only a sculp-tor but also a healer, preacher and a visionary whose artworks combined the spiritual and natural worlds in unexpected ways.

In an edition of MTN SA Foundation’s Art Talk containing a Hlungwani dedication, refer-ence is made of an acropolis constructed at Mbhokota village in the Makhado area which is being described as perhaps his most significant artwork. “Here Hlungwani found a hill with remains of old rock wall structures left behind by people who had lived there many years before. On this site he built ‘New Jerusalem the new country home of God and Christ’ where he taught his followers about the Gospel and healed the sick. He also taught sculpture to those who came to learn from him.” Most significantly New Jerusalem is being depicted in a massive replicated image and photos of the artist at work on a wall in the dedicated space.

On a spiritual voyage surrounded by his work the visitor becomes aware of elongated fish carvings, one of Hlungwani’s favourite themes significant in both Christian and African world views. For a fleeting moment there is a shadow that makes one look twice, as if the unfinished carving of a man came to life only for a split second.

During a final visit to the exhibition last week, a solitary figure attracted the attention where he moved among the larger than life pieces on display. An artist from Moshate in the Moko-pane area, John Mavuso grabbed a few minutes from his schedule while working in Polokwane that day to go view the work of an inspirational force. He learnt of Hlungwani’s work while still at school and entering competitions, Mavuso said. Mavuso, who prefers painting and working in clay, afterwards said he was

For decades the Toyota Corolla is described as one of the most trustworthy vehicles on the road and furthermore portrait by

Toyota enthusiasts as a vehicle that will never stop running, even beyond the end of time.

Now a new generation of reliability in the form of the latest Toyota Corolla was intro-duced to Polokwane residents during its launch at Limpopo Toyota on Tuesday evening. Toyota is proud of the new Corolla with its bold and distinctive design that it will be the centre of attention for quite a while. Sophisticated and strong curves ensure that wherever you take the Corolla, it will leave striking first impres-sions.

The bold style starts with the 3D layout of the headlamps and finishes off beautifully with the aero stabilising fins which assist with aerodynamics and flow of air along the vehicle. Crisp design lines run from front to back result-ing in a contemporary look. Refined details like assertive lower grille, front fog lamps (on certain models), colour coded electrically ad-justable exterior mirrors, and chrome luggage door garnish accentuate the sophisticated, striking style of the Corolla.

The interior is as properly designed as the exterior and Toyota made sure it delivers the ultimate in comfort and functionality. With leather seats (certain models), automatic air conditioner (certain models), display audio, six speakers and DVD player, USB port, Bluetooth and multi-information display you may never want to leave the ultra comfortable interior.

More impressive on the new Corolla is that it offers eleven exciting models varying from a 1,3 litre to a 1,8 litre petrol and 1,4 diesel engines. Every model in the new Corolla range delivers the ultimate in driving enjoyment. The newly adopted Multidrive S transmission offers better fuel efficiency and more responsive gear changes.

The 1,3 litre engine puts out 73 kW at 6 000 rpm and is available in a six speed manual transmission. The 1,6 litre engine boosts 90 kW at the same revolutions as the 1,3 litre and is available in manual or automatic. The powerful 1,8 litre sports 103 kW at 6 400 rpm and 173 Nm at 4 000 rpm. For diesel lovers the brand new 1,4 diesel produces 66 kW at 3 800 rpm.

With the sophistication of its design comes superb safety technology, something Toyota considered more than just the looks. The impact-absorbing body structure will help protect the occupants in the event of a colli-sion. The new Corolla also features Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) which minimis-es stopping distance by shifting more braking pressure to the wheels with the most grip, keeping the vehicle more stable and balanced when braking. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) monitors the speed of each wheel to detect locking and releases braking pressure and provides optimum braking pressure to each wheel, improving steering control during sudden stops.

Visit Limpopo Toyota at Motor City in Grobler Street to view the all new Toyota Co-rolla or contact them at 015 292 9500.

What was once a corrugated iron shack hosting about 20 preschool learn-ers has with the help of Protea Hotel

Ranch Resort and the South African Paediatric Association (Sapa) been turned into a two classroom brick school where healthy, eager young learners come to learn daily.

The three educators at Jonas Kgapho Pre-school in Sebara village, Mashashane struggled for years in dreadful conditions and with no running water, electricity or ablution facilities to educate their learners. In 2012, delegates to a Sapa conference held at the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort decided to become involved and participated in an outreach programme.

This programme involved packing thou-sands of food parcels along with the Stop Hunger Now mission one afternoon during the conference. Delegates also generated R10 000 in cash to be contributed to the school.

Polokwane Observer met with Dr Simon Strachan, former president of Sapa and Ryan Shearer, Protea Hotel Ranch Resort Manager and was later joined by school Principal Rosina Nkuna. Recalling the process Strachan said: “Over the past 15 months I kept in touch with the outreach programme while Ryan on a

continuous basis distributed food parcels to the school.

“The food was stored at the resort and lasted for almost a year. The food parcels contained nutritional food to keep learners healthy.”

Sapa and Protea Hotel Ranch Resort’s inter-est in the school motivated local communities. Aganang Municipality built a new school with two classrooms, ablution facilities teachers’ room and kitchen. “The R10 000 generated by the pledges of delegates at the conference was used to buy tables and chairs and to establish a playground,” he said. Jonas Kgapho Pre-school now hosts 62 learners.

Shearer said The Ranch will continue sup-porting the school. “When people book for conferences and they ask if they can make any contribution to some sort of social responsi-bility programme, we advise them on Jonas Kgapho Preschool.

“We welcome any kind of donation; funds, old clothes or furniture. It is better to continue helping one institution than to contribute in small quantities to various entities,” he said.

Nkuna expressed her gratitude towards Shearer and Strachan who initiated the pro-gramme to ensure a better life for learners. “We are happy about the new building and the continuous help we receive from these two men. We indeed still don’t have running water at the school and are still awaiting Eskom to install electricity points at the school,” she said.

She said her teachers remain dedicated.

“Even though we now have a new building the parents still struggle to pay the R100 per term school fee which results in minimal salaries of not more than R800 per month for our educa-

tors,” Nkuna said. Should people want to contribute to this

programme contact Protea Hotel Ranch Resort at 015 290 5000.

Sixty-two learn-ers now enjoy the facilities of modern school with two classrooms and ablution facili-ties.The school however has no running water or electricity yet.

We sell any type of property - residential, stands, commercial, industrial, farms and plots.

A common mistake when people buy homes is only considering their cur-rent needs and often forget the potential

resale value of the property which can have big implications further down the road.

When you’re making the buying decision, ask yourself why you’re interested in the prop-erty. Are you just buying it because it’s avail-able and in your general price range? Or are there reasons that other buyers may share? If there are sound reasons for you to make the purchase, chances are good that others will feel the same way in the future.

Room for improvementAre there a few simple changes around the

house that you could do to push up its value? A little investment can yield great returns down the line. However, don’t fall into the trap of putting too much money into a renovation when you might not be able to make it back later. Here are some factors to take into ac-count if you want to sell your house and make money from your investment.

Is it going to be in demand? On the one hand, you might think it’s a good

idea to buy property in a location that not too many others are interested in, because you can negotiate a better deal. But you may then have trouble selling it later. Location is always impor-tant. But whether or not the location will be in demand some years from now is the question.

It’s not always easy, but try to get a sense for whether or not an area is up-and-coming, is going to continue to be as in demand as it currently is, or is going to decline in popularity. If it’s in a city you’re familiar with, you’ll have a better sense of the future marketability of an area. Otherwise, you’ll have to do some asking around.

Future developmentA good tip is to check with the local munici-

pality for any future development plans in the

area. You’re going to lose resale value if, five years down the line, a noisy highway is going to be built close by or a high-rise building obscures your once-beautiful view.

Secure parkingIn many older suburbs, the need for under-

cover secure parking or gated parking wasn’t really taken into account – people were happy to park in the street.

Things have changed however, and nowa-days people prefer to have off-street parking.

Even if you’re comfortable without, remember that down the line you’re going to find it that much harder to resell.

It’s strange to think about selling a property before you’ve even made it your home. But even if you don’t foresee yourself relocat-ing down the line, you never know what the future has in store for you. By taking these few things into account now, you could ensure that the property financing you do now is an investment you’ll reap in future.

Remax Northland, Nedbank and Nazia Carrim Attorneys hosted a seminar for first time home buyers last week.

Industry experts from the various professions related to the purchasing of property were on hand to address the audience on all the finer details of finding that dream home, obtaining bank financing and working with the transfer attorneys. The seminar was focussed on mak-ing the home buying experience one of ease and enjoyment.

According to Jacques Blake of Remax Northland, who facilitated the event, many people have expressed their frustration when tackling the jungle of confusion surrounding the steps and legal processes involved in buy-ing a home.

“This is the biggest financial commitment people will make in their lives and our goal with this seminar is to supply the information and industry contacts to first time buyers and to allow them to make the best decision for themselves and their families.” he said.

Blake further said the need for professional

Mitchell House celebrated three significant days in the history of the school last Thursday with the 20th year of existence of the Prepara-tory School, its 10th year on their new campus and the official opening of the boarding school.

Speaking at the opening of the boarding school, Mitchell House Headmaster Andrew Cook said plans for the boarding school formed part of the original design of the campus. “In this day and age when many parents both work, Mitchell House felt they can offer the kind of support to growing boys and girls that are needed in modern society. Lastly, there is no doubt that the boarding establishment becomes the custodian of the ethos of a school. Boarders are physi-cally more committed to the institution,” Cook explained.

Once the decision was made by the Board of Governors to build a boarding residence, Mitchell House has drawn on the experiences of other top boarding schools in South Africa to match or better the very best in the business. The board-ing school caters for 60 learners with a resident housemaster, Doug Friedemann and his family, two resident tutors, as well as a male and female teacher intern and matron to cater for the pastoral needs of the boarders.

Cook thanked everybody involved in making the massive project become a reality and the building was officially dedicated and opened by Khatu Maiwashe, the quantity surveyor and Brian Smit, the Chairman of the Board of Governors.

>> Vowed to do their best to add value to the team>> ‘The province has immensely talented softball players’ - LebeaHERBERt RacHUEnE>>[email protected]

Limpopo softball players Thabang Letsoalo, Nkgodiseng Motshologoane, Tidima Ke-kana and Thapelo Seshosa were included

in the national team announced on Sunday after the National Softball Championships that ended in Cape Town on Sunday.

The four, who will join the rest of the team for a national softball camp in preparation for International Zone 6 games set to take place in September, have vowed to do their best to add value to the team.

Letsoalo has been in the national team before and said he will do his best while also guiding his teammates. “It is good to have some of my provincial teammates in the national team. Their selection will also inspire and motivate other local players who aspire to one day represent their country,” he said.

Motshologoane is new to the national team but said he is ready to cement his position and do the province proud. “I am very happy to be part of the team. I have always dreamt of representing my country at any level. This is

an opportunity of lifetime and I am ready to contribute to the team,” he said.

Matome Lebea, Spokesperson for Limpopo Softball Association said the selection of the four players is a clear indication that the province has immensely talented softball players. “We are happy for the four players and hope that they will do the province proud. Based on their performance during the tournament, we are convinced that they will do better,” Lebea said.

The national team consists of: Mark Quick-fall, Brandon Davids and Moses Molaba (West-ern Cape), Brandon Boullon and Shaun Findlay (Ekurhuleni), Renier Viljoen, Duncan Small, Pierre Neethling and JP Van Zyl (Tshwane), Wesley Asheden and Richard Knoop (KwaZulu-Natal) and Dalubuhle Dyani (Eastern Cape).

A 16-team soccer tournament aimed at expos-ing the talent of socio-economically disadvan-taged learners will be staged in Seshego from 18 to 21 April. The tournament hosts are Enviro-Loo Sanitation Solution Company and Philly’s Games.

Tournament coordinator, Cameron Mathebula said the tournament will involve teams from Seshego and surrounding areas. “We will use this tournament as a platform for talent exposure. We will have scouts from the National First Divi-sion and Premier Soccer League present during the tournament because there is a lot of talent in various communities but some of these under-privileged children don’t have the opportunity of the platform to showcase that talent,” Mathebula said.

He added that the sponsors intend estab-lishing a football academy which initially will accommodate 200 players. “In this manner it will nurture these players on a day to day basis with the right training, mentoring and coaching to reach their potential,” Mathebula said.

Modelvliegtuigklublede se ontsteltenis toe tuig neerstortBARRY VILJOEN >>[email protected]

The Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls lost their third match in succession in the Vodacom Cup com-petition after going down 13-68 to the Griquas in Kimberley last Friday.

The home side ran in ten tries to the one scored by Limpopo to score a comprehen-sive victory and propel themselves to second position on the log in the north section of the Vodacom Cup competition. Griquas drew first blood in a tough match with winger Hilford Clarke scoring in the corner in the fourth minute of the match. Clarke scored his second try shortly afterwards and flyhalf Dustin Jinka converted to give the side a 12-point cushion

in the opening 15 minutes of the match.Limpopo Blue Bulls flyhalf, Andy Huysamen

was successful with a penalty to narrow the gap, but Griquas added another two tries to lead 33-6 at half-time. The floodgates opened in the second half with Griquas scoring another six tries for a well-deserved victory.

Scrumhalf Niyaas Johnson scored Lim-popo’s only try when he broke away from a scrum to score under the posts. Huysamen added the conversion to add some respect-ability to the Limpopo Blue Bulls score.

The Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls have another tough away assignment this week-end when they tackle the Valke at the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg on Saturday.

Defending National Off-road Quad Bike Champion Jurie Meyer is unfazed by his second placing behind fellow Polokwanian, Brian Baragwanath in the first round of this year’s championship and is looking forward to the next round in Windsorton near Kimberley on 12 April.

The 21-year-old Polokwane quad rider says: “Bring on round number two,” after being ham-pered by a flat tyre during the Diamond Route 400, the first round of the 2014 championship. Meyer’s second place on his Yamaha Race Sup-port YFZ450R has laid a solid foundation for him to defend his 2013 Q1 championship and overall title. He was also the Q1 champion in 2012.

“I started in second place and was behind Brian Baragwanath, but it was not easy to pass on the tight off-road track. I then picked up a puncture when trying to pass Brian and because we were so close together, I decided to race with the flat tyre rather than spend time en-route fixing it. It was not ideal, but the best I could do,” Meyer explained after the race.

“Botter”, as he has been known since a tod-dler, prepares his own quad as well as his dad’s, Jurie Senior, for all their races. Meyer Senior is the defending Master Class Quad Champion –

for riders over the age of 46 years and has won the championship three times in the past. The pair train together on the dirt tracks on their farm outside Polokwane.

In fact, off-road racing is a business for the whole family. Botter’s mom, his two sisters and their boyfriends are part of the team and the service crew for the two men. Both admit that they cannot do it without their support crew while the rest of the family will not miss a race.

Travelling from Polokwane towing their huge trailer with the two quad bikes and spares is usually an adventure and a chance to see the rest of the country. The racing itself, also forms an integral part of the adventure.

Limpopo Softball Association’s (LSA) senior men’s team brought home silver after a suc-cessful national championship which ended in a 5-4 defeat against Tshwane Softball Club during the final on Sunday. On their way to the final they defeated, Western Cape, Ekurhuleni and Eastern Cape.

LSA Spokesperson Matome Lebea said they are happy to have brought home the silver medal. “It was a tough match. We gave our all but we could not match them pound for pound. We are happy with the silver medal,” he said.

He added they are happy to have fulfilled the promise they made to MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mirriam Ramadwa earlier. “We made a promise to the MEC that we will bring home either gold, silver or bronze medals and we are glad to have brought home silver,” Lebea said.

The provincial women’s team obtained sixth place in the championships. The Western Cape women’s team was declared the champions fol-lowing a hard earned 8-5 victory over Tshwane Softball Club.

“We are sad about the woman’s performance during the championship. It was not satisfactory. However, we hope that they have learnt a lot during the tournament,” Lebea said.
