ENGAGED STUDENTS Pomona College is for adventurous creative-minded students with the drive to explore

and pursue their academic passions Offering 48 majors a stellar faculty small classes and

unmatched resources supporting student success Pomona is widely regarded as one of the

worldrsquos leading liberal arts and sciences institutions Students studying at Pomona receive an

excellent education in the humanities fine arts social sciences and natural and physical sciences

in an academic and residential environment rich in resources intellectual collaboration and the

passionate pursuit of individual interests

The College enrolls approximately 1650 students (with roughly 100 studying abroad each

semester) and has a student-faculty ratio of 8 to 1 The average class size of 15 offers students

the opportunity to become full participants in the learning process Close interaction between

teachers and students is the norm with most classes taught as seminars By challenging one

another and their professors Pomona

students develop skills in analytical and

critical thinking

Pomona is also a member of

the Claremont Consortium a unique

collection of five undergraduate and

two graduate institutions located very

near each other affording a wide choice

of facilities events and opportunities

common to larger universities

All Pomona students are

undergraduates No graduate-level

programs are offered and the College

does not enroll students who have

already completed a bachelorrsquos

degree or the equivalent

STELLAR FACULTY Since Pomona is an entirely undergraduate institution there are no graduate students

competing for faculty attention Even in your first year some of your classes may be taught

by senior professors Many of the Collegersquos most distinguished faculty teach first-year

seminars and senior science faculty often teach introductory lab sections

Yoursquoll not only learn from extraordinary professors yoursquoll get to know them well

With small classes and about 85 percent of faculty living within five miles of campus face

time isnrsquot limited to classroom and office hours Yoursquoll find professors and students in every

discipline working closely on research as well as interacting in a range of casual settingsmdash

over lunch on the playing field as participants in a musical ensemble or just strolling across

campus on a beautiful California day

ldquoAfter four years at Pomona I have come to realize that there is nothing that can give an international

student a better experience of American higher education than a liberal arts college Pomona provided

the resources and support I needed to transition to life in the USrdquo

TRUE LIBERAL ARTS A true liberal arts education is the most effective way to prepare yourself to thrive in a changing

world With intimate classes a strong curriculum and deep resources Pomona is especially well

suited to provide students both the breadth of study that builds intellectual resilience and the depth

of study needed for advancement in a specific field

No specific course in the Pomona curriculum is prescribed for graduation Designed to

encourage exploration while providing great freedom of choice Pomonarsquos Breadth of Study

Requirements include one course in each of six areasmdashCriticism Analysis and Contextual Study of

Works of the Human Imagination Social Institutions and Human Behavior History Values Ethics

and Cultural Studies Physical and Biological Sciences Mathematical and Formal

Reasoning and Creation and Performance of Works of Art and Literature

Central to this rich and empowering intellectual experience is trading

ideas with other exceptional students in an environment that encourages

collegiality not competition And since 90 of all classes have fewer than

30 students it is virtually impossible to get lost in the classroom

While the typical Pomona student is very bright and academically accomplished you

don t feel the same cutthroat competitive atmosphere at Pomona that you might at

other colleges with similar academic levels Instead Pomona college students are

above all collaborative as opposed to competitive

SUPERB RESOURCES Our students enjoy both the advantages of a small school where professors teach every class and

the opportunities and resources of a larger university setting When you add the resources of the

undergraduate Claremont Colleges (the 5Cs) to everything Pomona already offers all told you get

more classes to choose from (over 2500) more students to bounce ideas off of (nearly 6000)

more clubs to join (250 and counting)mdashand more dining halls to eat in (7)

Benefits of being in Southern California are harder to quantify Where else

can you explore performance and social justice through the Theatre for Young

While the typical Pomona student is very bright and academically accomplished you

don t feel the same cutthroat competitive atmosphere at Pomona that you might at

other colleges with similar academic levels Instead Pomona college students are

above all collaborative as opposed to competitive

of many cultures and political systems around the world International students at Pomona
