his sample design can be easily adapted to theunique dimensions of your landscape and pool area.As presented, this design incorporates hardscapes,

walking paths and water-smart trees and plants. Youmay choose to use fewer trees and plants dependingon the size of your property and your budget.

As shown, the canopy coverage for the Pool-Friendlydesign is estimated at 245 percent at maturity. However, only a 50 percent canopy coverage is required to qualifyfor the Water Smart Landscapes rebate program. To apply, submit an application and participate in a site reviewbefore making any landscape changes or removing turf. Also, consult with your Homeowner’s Association, ifapplicable, and check to ensure your design complieswith local drought codes. This design incorporates hardy, water-smart plants.Other landscape tips:

Avoid plants that drop excessive flowers, leaves, seedpods and other debris that may easily enter thepool. Debris can diminish water quality, efficiencyof pool equipment and your enjoyment. Don’t usethorny or spiny plants that may create a safetyhazard or puncture pool toys.

If you use plantings to “hide” pool equipment, besure to leave adequate space and ventilation for safeoperation and maintenance. Check with your localgovernment agency and Homeowner’s Association,if applicable, to verify what codes and ordinancesregulate how closely you can place plants to yourpool equipment.

Allow room for trees to attain their mature size, including their proximity to trees and buildingson neighboring lots. Shade trees provide a coveredplace for poolside relaxing or for a backyard picnic.

Cover your pool when not in use to reduceevaporation, heat loss and debris collection.

Never drain a pool or spa into the street orinto a storm drain. Visit snwa.com forinformation on how to properly drain apool or spa. For more tips on Water SmartPool Management, log on to snwa.com orcall 258-SAVE.

New plants often need frequent lightwatering in the beginning, but onceestablished, respond better to lessfrequent but deeper drip waterings.

Flagstone pavers are incorporated as partof this design. Pavers must be ungroutedto qualify for the Water Smart Landscapesrebate. Check with local suppliers or land-scape companies to determine the bestproduct for your landscape.

In lieu of pavers, functional turf forrecreation and entertaining may beincorporated into this design. If you usegrass in your landscape, ensure that itconforms to your sprinkler spray patternsto maximize water efficiency, and checkfirst to ensure you comply with droughtcodes in your area that limit the installationof turf at new properties. If planting grass, consider warm-season varieties, such asZoysia, St. Augustine, Bermuda or Buffalograss to reduce water use.

This design also includes organic mulch, such as bark chips, which provides anatural look, prevents weeds and reduceswater evaporation. Organic mulches havethe added benefit of keeping plants coolin the summer and adding nutrients tothe soil as they decompose.
