Welcome to St. Rose
We are proud to celebrate the centennial of our church
this year. St. Rose is a historical landmark of the city of
Quincy. This church is considered as representative of
the Venetian Gothic style: a mix of Gothic,
Romanesque, and Byzantine styles. The 1912 stained
glass windows are characteristic of the Munich Pictorial
Style. This style is characterized by almost lifelike
images of saints and figures with landscape back-
grounds.
Before the church was reopened, 3 marble altars, a
matching altar rail, and a pulpit were installed. On June
10, 2012, our bishop consecrated these altars. This
beautiful ceremony included the celebration of a
Pontifical Mass with the conferring of the sacrament of
confirmation and an outdoor procession of the Blessed
Sacrament as we celebrated the solemnity of Corpus
Christi.
In the fall of 2012, we will begin a thorough restoration
of our windows. If you wish to know more about this
project, do not hesitate to take a copy of our Restoration
brochure in the vestibule of the church and/or to contact
us.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but a
chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member of
your local parish. To join, just give us a call. After both
Sunday Masses, the community meets in the hall to
socialize. Everyone is welcome! Coffee & Donuts are
available.

From the Chaplain’s Desk: Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost — The Parable of the Good Samaritan
When Jesus asks the lawyer: “which of these three proves
himself to be the neighbor of the one in need?”, the lawyer does
not answer: “The Samaritan”. No, but “He who took pity on
him.” But you will say: “It is the same person!” Yes. However,
the lawyer would not be caught dead praising a Samaritan!
Who is this lawyer? It is not a lawyer in the modern sense of the
term. The word “Law” in the Bible is the translation of the
Hebrew word “Torah”. The “Torah” comprises the first five
books of the Old Testament. When Jesus refers to the Old
Testament, He calls it “The Law and the Prophets”. Sometimes
He adds “The Psalms”. In fact the word Torah does not mean
only law but is more general and means teaching or doctrine.
This teaching is the teaching of God to Moses during the forty
days he was in the mountain with God. Therefore our Lawyer is
really someone who can read and translate the Old Testament
written in Hebrew, and explain what it means, someone more
like a Scripture Scholar or a Theologian today.
His intention was to test how good Jesus was in his knowledge of
the Old Testament: “Master, what must I do to possess eternal
life?” This is not a question of a lawyer but a question of a
believer to a theologian. Jesus is not deceived and he returns the
question as a fellow scripture scholar: “What is written in the
Law? How do you read it?” There are hundred of precepts in the
Bible, which ones are the central ones, which ones resume
everything? Our ‘lawyer’ is an excellent theologian and his
answer could not be better.
Jesus approves without reserve the answer. One must consider
that if the first part of the answer is found in the Ten
Commandments, the second part is not. It is found buried in the
middle of ritual prescriptions in the book of Leviticus. It requires
good knowledge of the text and a serious reflection about it. But
Jesus does not content himself to approve our “lawyer”, he
stresses the fact that what matters is not only to know what we
must do to be saved but to actually do it. St. James will say: “do
not be a hearer only but a doer also.” Easy to say, hard to do:
“Do this and thou shalt live”, of life eternal. The Pharisees
intended to observe all the precepts of the law; they observed the
letter of the law as St. Paul mentions in the epistle, but, too often,
forgot the spirit of the law and excused themselves of more
serious obligations while despising others who did not observe
the least of the ritual prescriptions; they also often would rather
follow human traditions rather than the Divine Tradition. Jesus
said about them “do what they say, do not do what they do!”
What is a Samaritan? Today, calling someone a Samaritan or a
good Samaritan is a compliment, a praise of someone –usually
volunteer– who does not hesitate to go to the help of the needy.
For our lawyer speaking of a good Samaritan is a contradiction in
terms! A Samaritan is an enemy, a heretic, someone to loathe.
When the Northern Kingdom was conquered by the Babylonians
in the 7th century BC , many of them were sent in exile at the
other end of the empire and the Babylonians sent people from the
east of the empire to replace them. They adopted the Jewish
religion. They worship the Lord, the God the Jews, accept the
Torah, but they are not Jewish. They loathe each other.
A Samaritan or a pagan would not be considered as a neighbor
and would not fall under the precept of loving your neighbor as
yourself. Jesus affirms the contrary and somewhat leads our
lawyer to admit it. There is no limit to our love of our neighbor.
If we have the possibility of helping someone in dire need, it
does not matter how much we personally dislike him, there is no
excuse for not helping him if we can.

The desire to love and be loved is the deepest need of our being.
We long to be known, accepted, and cherished by another. Yet, the
ability to fully give or receive this love is unattainable on our own.
As Catholics we believe Jesus Christ has entered our broken world
to conquer sin and restore us to new life. Throughout every age he
continues to invite all women and men to follow him through his
Church, to whom he has entrusted his teaching authority, so that all
can know and follow him. Only God can give us the unconditional
love and acceptance that we desire. Yet, he has created marriage, a
holy union, to mirror this supreme love on earth.
At the heart of their married love is the total gift of self that
husband and wife freely offer to each other. Because of their sexual
difference, husband and wife can truly become “one flesh.”
Through the language of their bodies, their sexual union recalls
their vows: giving themselves to one another in love that is total,
faithful, and life-giving. This call to love is to follow Christ
himself, who handed himself totally over for his bride, the Church.
Spouses imitate him by giving the entirety of themselves to one
another, including the gift of their fertility and their openness to
new life.
Contraception and sterilization, which deliberately suppress
fertility, reduce the sexual act so that husband and wife withhold
the completeness of their total gift to each other. This changes the
meaning of their sexual union so that it no longer expresses the
fullness of their love. God our Father loves us and wants our lives
to be full and rich! He has given his Church the task of bringing
women and men to the fullness of truth which leads to our
happiness in this life and in the life to come. Jesus gives us the
power and strength of the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of Love—so that
we, particularly husbands and wives, can truly love one another.
The teaching on the use of contraception and sterilization may
seem challenging, but it is to preserve the true, complete self-gift
between husband and wife, the kind of love that brings real, lasting
joy and peace. If we have failed to live this in the past, we need not
be discouraged. Our loving Father is always calling us back
through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and wanting to strengthen
us in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. When we embrace the
Church’s teaching on human sexuality and marriage and follow
Jesus, we invite the Holy Spirit into our lives in a powerful way.
When we trust in the Lord’s desire for our happiness, he can
transform our love in a way that can transform the world.
