BUSINESS CARDDescription: A letterhead (stationary) and card using a logo for the Rainy Day Cafe.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): The process for this was pretty involved. I was able to use both Adobe InDesign and Illustator to create the stationary/business card. However, I primarily used Illustrator. I used Illustrator for the creation of the logo — so that’s also what I used to refine the logo itself. Once that was done, I was able to go into Illustator and use that same software to create a business card and a letterhead. For the business card, I took the umbrella and pasted it into a small, business card sized document. I then took a text box and placed it near the umbrella and typed in the necessary information. After that, I turned that same information slightly sideways, thanks to Brother Judkins’ suggestion. I wanted to keep the back of the card simple, so I took an elegant font and then placed it on a background that would allow it to pop. Next, I placed raindrops by it.

For the stationary, I used those same raindrops and created a border at the top. Then I took the umbrella shape and put it into the background as a watermark, which I kept at about 12% opacity. I put the title of the cafe in the upper right, in the same font that is used on the back of the business card, and then I inserted a text box which included my info into the bottom right.

Message: The Rainy Day cafe is a cozy way to spend your day.

Audience: Anyone that enjoys bakeries or cafes.

Top Thing Learned: How to take advantage of simplicity in creating things pertaining to business.

BROCHUREDescription:

A foldable brochure created for a company.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

For this project, I used InDesign. It was amazing to see how this application was created for things of this nature! I was able to take find a picture of a pig off of Google and edit out the background using Photoshop. Then I was able to find a cute font and edit the O to look like a pig snout in Illustrator. I took the logo and incorporated it into the brochure.

I tried to use similar pink colors for repetition, but I used the big picture of the pig (that had a lot of dark color elements) to create contrast throughout the brochure.

I was able to write the content of the brochure – I used the text wrap tool to create a fun and balanced look around the photo.

Message: Micro pigs are a great pet for anyone!

Audience: People who want small animals or pigs.

Top Thing Learned: How to combine elements of InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator to all work together.

MONTAGEDescription: A montage blending several photos, used to illustrate (as also shown by the type) the im-portance of keeping an eternal perspective.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing):

1. I found a picture of the woods that I really liked, using lighting that illustrated the hopeful nature of the quote I planned on using.

2. I found the picture of the girl looking sad (the largest girl; found in the bottom left corner) and used the lasso tool around her body. I then was able to drag that picture into the main picture (woods) and resized/moved her to where I wanted her.

3. I used the paintbrush tool and erased the excess image around her body, setting the paintbrush on 100% opacity.

4. I used the paintbrush tool again, using very low (probably just 5%) opacity, and slightly blended the girl into the background.

5. I repeated these steps with my other photos I found on the Internet (graduation, marriage, baby); how-ever, I used a higher opacity (around 30%) to blend them into the background.

6. I knew I wanted to put the type into the bottom right to keep a good amount of whitespace at the top, so I used the rectangle tool to create a small line.

7. Under the line created in step 6, I found a font I liked and inserted the scripture that I wanted to use, found in D&C 58.

Message: I wanted my audience to feel hopeful when they looked at this photo — I wanted them to real-ize that even when things are hard, they will get better. We can always trust in God.

Audience: This audience is very broad, but focuses specifically on anyone going through difficulties and trials in their lives.

Top Thing Learned: I learned a lot through this project, (how to use the lasso tool, how to drag images from one tab to another, etc) but I would say that the “top thing” I learned was how to use the paintbrush tool to blend photos.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I actually didn’t use any filters and didn’t decrease or increase color quality (saturation).

EVENT ADDescription: A mock ad/flier for a kickboxing class using an scanned image and Microsoft Word.

Process: I really liked the entire picture, so I used all of it for my ad. I found it in a magazine and then scanned it using one of the library’s printers. I loved the colors that the picture used, so I took my color tool and found a couple of the colors and used them for the rectangles that I inserted at the bottom. I used rectangles be-cause there is a theme with rectangular-like lines throughout the photo — whether it’s her legs, the straightness of the punching bag, the walls and curtains, etc. It was simple — all that was used for it was Microsoft Word, a scanner, and an image from People Magazine.

Message: The ad is for a kickboxing class. The message is that the class is fun, youthful, and will help the participants to get in shape for summer.

Audience: Young women, probably about ages 14 – 30.

Top Things I Learned: How to use the hidden design features of Microsoft Word.

Scanned Images, Sources, original sizes —

The image was scanned from a 2014 edition of People Magazine. The image itself was 8 3/8 x 10 7/8, but I cropped it a little bit after I scanned it at 300 ppi resolution.

PHOTODESIGNDescription: Practiced photography and photo editing skills by taking my own photograph and editing it with Photoshop.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): I was able to take this picture (using a Canon camera borrowed from my friend Kristine, who is the model in this photo) on this playground at Porter Park, which has the coolest color scheme. From there, I was able to recognize this color scheme as Split Complementary, and found a cool picture of a ship to go behind it. Then I went onto Photoshop and did the four basic edits: levels, saturation, sharpness, and color balance. Following the directions, I designed an 8 x 11.5 layout that incorporated text, my photo, and other design elements learned in the FOCUS book. For the finishing touch, I added in my color scheme and extended the lines for repetition and to make it more imagina-tive.

Message:My message is to continue having imagination, regardless of your stage of life.

Audience:This audience is intended to be universal.

Top Thing Learned:I learned how to use Photoshop, which was awesome, and I learned so much about photography! I didn’t know anything before, so this project was so helpful.

Color scheme and color names:My color scheme was split complementary, using variations green, blue and brick.

FLIERDescription: Simple black & white flier to encourage attendance at a conference for recent graduates.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

Prior to the creation of this flier, I studied the principles of creating effective ads and design projects. Using the things I learned, I was able to sketch an idea of my flier. I then began to incorporate those things into Adobe’s InDesign, using several different design concepts. I used various shades of gray — dark and light — and black and white rectangles for contrast as well as consistency/repetition. I aligned the rectangles with the picture, but then made the changed their lengths to draw the viewer’s attention with asymmetry.

Message:

The intended audience for this flier is recent graduates who are interested in furthering and enhancing their leadership qualities.

Audience:

Young college graduates, ranging (generally) from ages 22 – 28.

Top Thing Learned:

The importance of practice. My first few ideas and tries with the flier didn’t come out the way I wanted, so I continued to try until I made a project I was happy with. I recognized the importance of asymmetry and alignment, specifically.

WEBPAGEDescription: A website to showcase a logo I created for the “Rainy Day Cafe.”

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): This web page was created using Text Wrangler. I’ve never worked with HTML or CSS before, so it was fun to see how much can be created through it. I started with the logo at the top. After that, I messed around with the fonts (using Google Fonts) and picked some fonts that I thought would accent the cafe vibe. Then I inserted a hyperlink to my blog at the bottom. I mostly used TextWrangler, with some Photoshop and Illustrator for the images.

Audience: Anyone who is hungry, especially who wants a more upscale meal.

Top Thing Learned: How to work with CSS and HTML.

Color scheme and color hex(s): Monochromatic. Scarlett brown: #BA1919. Brown: #7E3817

Title Font Families & Category: Lobster (script)

Changes made to the CSS: I changed the font families; added a hover on the link; repositioned some items; did a box shadow on the body.

LOGODescription: Three logos created for the “Rainy Day Bakery.”

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): These three logos were created using Adobe Illustra-tor. I used the ellipse tool to create the shape of the raindrop in the first logo, and then used the direct selection tool (white arrow) to manipulate the curves of the top of the raindrop. I then gave the text inside anchor points and manipulated them to fill the rain-drop. The second logo (the baguette umbrella) was quite a process involving the ellipse tool. I was able to make the ellipse and then cover it using the rectangle tool. After that, I used the Pathway tool and subtracted the rectangle, leaving it with a baguette shaped half-circle. I filled it with a tan-ish color, and then used the Pathway tool again to create the slices in the bread. The Eiffel Tower logo also used the Pathway tool, along with the line tool to create the lattice-style look. I tried to use fonts that described the different styles of each logo, along with color schemes that reflected them as well.

Message: Rainy Day Cafe is a quaint place to spend a rainy afternoon.

Audience: Anyone looking for a place to go on a rainy day.

Top Thing Learned: How to use Illustrator! I didn’t have any idea how to use it before. I also enjoyed learning how to use the Pathway tool.

Three Color Scheme and Color Names: For the first, analogus (blue and indigo); for the second, monochromatic: gold; for the third, complementary: pink and gray.

Three sets of Title / Body Font Names & Categories: Font number 1 was slab, “Blackoak,”; fonts 2 were modern (“Bellstead”) and Sans Serif (“Century Gothic”); font 3 was script “French Script MT.”
