At the technical University of Eindhoven I develop projects for students of the faculty of Industrial Design. Key areas of focus are on innovative interaction, playfulness and service design.

These projects are conducted by groups of four students over a period of 4 months. At Industrial Design, students are considered junior designers and I gain a lot of pleasure and inspiration in coaching these students towards becoming full fledged designers.

Presented here, are two projects that I developed and coached.

Make it Snappy! is one of the results of the

project ‘Greetingcard 3.0’ in which students designed innovative

online services in the area of greeting-cards.

Make it Snappy, by Madelon de Haas, provides an online tool with which one can create a fotocube which can be sent in the mail flat, but pops into shape when the envelope is opened. We are currently exploring the commercial viability for this concept.

Adventure wheelWithin the project ‘Living in a Fantasy’ an interactive space was designed in which children are given a base vehicle that can be adapted and cutomised. The vehicle can become a car, a boat or even a spaceship. The surroundings are changed by turning the wheel on the vehicule and provide the children with different interactions in the space.

A project that dealt with exploring and creating electronic wearables, I worked togeth-er with Anouk Wipprecht on our concept for the Cat Bag. Using the Lilypad Arduino, which was developed for adding electronics to clothing, we created a bag that shares characteristics with a live cat. You can pet the bag, at which point the bag starts to purr. Our aim was to create a bag that people can get even more emotionally attached to than to a regular bag.

Hewlett Packard developed a software toolkit for development of GPS applications on mobile devices. In this master project my team and I developed a game based on the threats of privacy infringement. We took inspiration from the radio broadcast of the war of the worlds, which people thought to be reality at the time.

We invited people for a GPS tour through Utrecht organized by a made-up insurance company. At some point however, their mobile device was hacked by an organization who say that the insurance company is up to no good and ask you to spy on them.

The software was programmed by me in Flash and the Mobile Bristol Toolkit.

Led by a desire to bring user generated and empowering data from the internet to the physical domain, I came up with the concept for DAISY, or Data as you see it. With DAISY I created a prototype of a system that uses Augmented Reality to provide digital data as an information layer over the physical world.

The system is based on the use of fiducials, which are shapes that can be recognized by a computer and from which you can determine the position and perspective of digital objects relative to the camera. A camera is mounted on a set of Virtual Reality Goggles, which creates the possibility of merging the real world and the virtual world.

Video is a tremendous communication tool. I like to say; “If a picture says more than a 1000 words, how about 25 pictures per second with sound?!”

With video, you can package condensed information in an easily accessible way, you can show things that exist only in your mind and you can broadcast this to the world.

With the tools Final Cut Pro en Adobe After Effects, I have produced these various video’s. Mostly, I have been responsible for concepts and worked as a self-directing editor/animator.

Together with some partners I set up the Visual Music Label NoTV. NoTV set out to be a platform to publish VJs from the club scene. We published five DVDs

At NoTV, I was technical director and designed many of the menus. Besides this, I also worked on some of the content.

With NoTV we worked together with artists such as; Micha Klein, Dadara, Hipoptimist (Lamb) and Danielle Kwaaitaal

Over the past years, I have developed many DVDs for various clients such as Submarine and Universal Video. Often the production included the menu design and always I was responsible for the DVD authoring.

Development is done in DVD Studio Pro and DVD After Edit.
