Section 4: Architecture at Robert Gordon University

History of the SchoolThe School has a distinguished history, earning an outstanding reputation in providing high quality professionally accredited courses since 1918. It is the third oldest school of architecture in the UK.

Overview of the course

At The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment we combine innovative thinking with new technologies and traditional practice across all aspects of building design and construction.

The School is passionate about producing graduates who have not only expert knowledge, but also the skills to apply it appropriately and creatively. You’ll find our graduates establishing their own practices or working on projects around the world, from the landmark Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur to super-casinos in Las Vegas.

Within the world of design and construction, many professions work side by side, sharing expertise and creativity in pursuit of design excellence and a quality environment in which to live and work. Our approach reflects this reality; we are unique in Scotland in offering both architecture and built environment courses in one multidisciplinary School.

Architects make a unique contribution to the shaping and modification of built environments. They use skills drawn from art, science and technology, and must have the ability to imagine space and form. By the end of this course you will have the ability to communicate the quality of ideas and realise designs. This course allows you to develop sophisticated skills in the design of buildings, towns and cities. Architecture is about our future, and as such, this course includes a focus on sustainability.

Key course facts:

• Robert Gordon University is ranked 22nd in the UK (The Times, 2017) for Architecture

• RIBA Part 1 and 2 achieved on completion of the MArch degree

“I chose Robert Gordon University for the facilities at the architecture school – it has large, well equipped studios and workshops with 180 degree windows – at sunset we have the best view! I wouldn’t have facilities like these at home.”

Section 5: Alternative entry via ICRGU

There are two entry points available at Robert Gordon University. This is dependent on school results, English level and standard of final portfolio:

• RGU: Direct Year 1 of the BSc Architecture / Master of Architecture degree

• ICRGU: Pathway Year 1 of the BSc Architecture / Master of Architecture degree

Designed specifically for international students, ICRGU is a supportive environment to help students commence their study, build knowledge, skills and confidence, whilst they settle into life in a new country. Students who do not meet direct entry criteria can apply for ICRGU without adding any additional time on to their study.

Students will study the same topics as they would at RGU directly, with the inclusion of additional learning and communication skills modules, smaller class sizes and more face to face time with lecturing staff. ICRGU can also offer additional English language classes at the start of the course if required.

Studio modules in Year 1 will be spent within the School of Architecture, ensuring a specialist environment for creativity and reflection. This allows students to become familiar at an earlier stage with the university facilities, their future classmates and lecturing staff.

After completion, and meeting the minimum pass mark, ICRGU students will be guaranteed progression into the School of Architecture and Built Environment at Robert Gordon University.

Entry requirementsStudents can join ICRGU from completion of Form 5 or Form 6 (with the right level of results), allowing more flexibility and the ability to start your degree at an earlier stage if desired. Physics is preferred but not essential for entry.

PortfolioFor students who do not currently have a portfolio, ICRGU request evidence of artistic ability to support their application. ICRGU looks for a range of sketches (8-10 samples) that showcase shading ability and a range of subjects.

LocationLocated in the heart of the Robert Gordon University campus, ICRGU is only a few minutes’ walk from the School of Architecture and Built Environment. Students will have all academic modules taught in ICRGU, whilst all studio and design time will be held at the University.
