nutshells & nutjobsa brief tour of the crazy little world i try to contain inside my head!

of pens and womendrawings and quirky characters that are hopefully more successful than my rhyming skills above!

Long before i opted to embrace the crafty side of me, these funny little faces with their cute-yet-creepy eyes used to reflect the style i strove to create. Though at least

four years have passed since these minions saw the light of screen (gettit, gettit?), i still have a weak spot for that mishievous look of theirs and couldn’t resist including

them! For me, simple line art is a true classic. It always fascinates me how much one can capture and express theough basic geometric forms and twists of humor!

about

nutshells & nutjobsJust a quick hello and welcome! What will follow is a brief tour into the oddity that I call my world. Heads up, there will be monsters, albeit the cute and cuddly type.... In case you do want to know what I do in a nutshell, well, I’m a designer... no, not a graphic designer, though that was my training, simply because I migrated to and from the field so many times that I can’t claim to belong to it completely. What do I do? I strive to make pretty stuff... some might have a message, others a purpose, and a few might even just be simply pretty... I love working with new media, and have dabbled in wire work, mural painting, stitching, animating, compositing, draweing, and surely, designing.... Why nutjobs? Well, simply because of the fact that I am capable of drawing something then laughing for hours on end because of it.... In other words, cause I just love this odd little world...I sheep you not!Krystel

Darkness falls across the landThe midnite hour is close at handCreatures crawl in search of bloodTo terrorize yawls neighbourhoodAnd whosoever shall be foundWithout the soul for getting downMust stand and face the hounds of hellAnd rot inside a corpses shell

When Vincent Price and Michael Jackson sat together and wrote these words for the opening scene from thriller, they had never envisioned beings as blood-curdlingy cute as these! Total limelight affectionados, these little minions have snuck onto the sets of countless video clips and movie sets. Always edited out at the end, they have developed a fearsome reputation among editors. Many a good take has been ruined on their account! And the saga continues...

Recent studies have proven that mothers are alien creatures placed on this earth to make us look clumsy and disorganized. This alien race is able to carry a life for 9 months! give birth in spite of excuriating pain, and then selflessly love the offspring that caused them said pain. Skills include the ability to spot lies, ease pain, make perfectly folded omlettes and clean almost any kind of stain. In fact, the modern polygraph was developed

based on studies conducted on their abilities. They have an uncanny sixth sense and have repeatedly displayed a talent for knowing who stole the cookie from the cookie jar. They are effortlessly able to time an egg, make the beds, fold elastic sheets, help their offsprings with homework, solve problems, scare monsters from under the bed, spot a bad friend, come up with ingenious punish-ment ideas, give life altering hugs, share their desserts, chase rain clouds away, prepare magical hot chocolate....

The use of ground-breaking technology has yielded these photos as an explanation to how this alien race is able to achieve the numerous feats listed above. Years of surveillance and investigations have finally culminated with iirevocable proof supporting the premises of said studies. These images are at the forefront of the investigation into this matter, and might change the face of this earth irrevocably!

No other explanation is possible! This is not some visual pun created on the occsasion of mothers’ day as they would have you believe. This is THE TRUTH!

to fit the personality and color palette of friends, famliy and sometimes even total strangers! The success of this little fabric journey that I embarked on was the highlight of my first freelance year, and the cherry on top of my thread and stitch cake was when Jade George, a Time Out Beirut Editor, bought one of my first card holder designs and loved it so much that she wrote a small review in the May 2010 Eco-friendly issue! Now almost a year later, I have started combining fabric, cardboard, and magazine snippets with illustrations and designs to come up with new exciting designs.

The beauty of the process is that the only computer assisted part of it is posting the pictures of the finished products on my blog! 100% handmade and crafted, and totally worth the needle pokes and inevitable frustrations. After relying so hard on ctrl+Z undoes and reverts, having no recourse other than creativity and the ability to think on your toes is quite a challenge! Oh! and the next technologically infused step will be an online shop featuring the new collection so stay posted for more pretty practical accessories!

On a recent trip to Barcelona I stumbled upon fabric covered copybooks and it was love at first sight! The idea that your copybook could go from a regular practical note taking item to an accessory played around in my mind for quite a while, so it’s no wonder that the minute I decided to freelance, the first thing I did was grab an agenda and cover it with fabric, love and buttons! Each item I crafted from then on was uniquely and carefully styled in hopes of being adopted as a fashion statement and not just a copybook. The more designs I made the more I was approached to customize items

whimsical gifts...

I’ve always had the uncanny yet impractical ability to come up with small characters that could make me laugh for hours... But, discovering that my characters actually appealed to others and made them revert to cooing and giggling was quite an unexpected surprise! In an unprec-edented bold attempt, I actually showed my sketchbooks (my most private and priceless

posession) to some friends of mine., and lo and behold! Most of the characters that I thought ony appealed to me were instantly adopted, given names, personalities and a life of their own... This highly feminine-looking girl was no exception, she wasn’t given a name yet here she is parading around on an A4 copybook...
