Present1

Use simple present to show actions,

events, or states that are true in

general or happen habitual.

o I eat doughnuts every Friday.

o I eat lunch every day.

o Every morning, before leaving my

room, I brush my teeth

Use the present progressive to show

actions or events in progress at the

moment.

o You are taking dance lessons.

o I am looking for a scholarship in

the USA.

o You are eating pie.

The present perfect and the present

perfect progressive connect the

past with the present. Use them to

show actions and states that began

in the past and continue until now.

o I have been studying at SCJ

School for three years now.

o I’ve had my phone for a year.

o She’s been teaching since 2003.

They are also called active and

describe actions.

Use simple verb forms (without –ing)

to describe the action in general.

Use progressive verb forms (with –

ing) to describe an action in

progress at a specific time.

o I go to school everyday.

o We most frequently use our

cellphones to send texts.

o I am doing my English homework

right now.

Non-action verbs (also called

stative) describe states and

conditions that can’t be seen such

as appearance (seem), emotions

(love), mental states (know),

perceptions (hear), possession

(own), and wants (need).

o You seem happy.

o I want a new laptop.

o I know her well.

We normally use adverbs with

action verbs. We use the verbs look,

sound, feel, smell and taste to show

states, in which case they go as

adjectives.

o Matteo always listens carefully.

o You sound disappointed!

o She works hard in school.

Past1

Use the simple past to express an

action, event or state occurring at a

general or specific time in the past.

o She wanted to eat pizza

yesterday.

o Last week I ran 10 kilometers.

o I studied an hour before the

presentation.

Use the past progressive to express an

action that was in progress (not

finished) at a time in the past.

o I was eating when it started

raining.

o He was studying medicine when

he got married.

o I was eating when he got here.

3Use the present perfect to express an

action, event or state occurring at an

indefinite time in the past.

o She got married 18 years ago.

o We have known each other for

two years now.

o How many people have ever felt

bad about something?

Use used to + base form to show a

habitual action, event, or state that

was true in the past but is no longer true. Use would + base form to express

actions or events that occurred

regularly during a period in the past.

o I used to go to gymnastic lessons.

o When I was a child, I would go to

my family cottage often with my family.

o He used to play soccer.

Use the past perfect to show an

action, event or state of being that

happened before a certain time in

the past.

o By June, I had been in school for

almost six months.

o They had known each other for 11

years when they started dating.

o He started working after he

graduated.

Use the past perfect progressive to

express an action that was in progress

before another past event.

o She had been working for a month

when she moved out.

o He had been running a lot when

he sprained his ankle.

o He had been driving for over 30

years when he had his first car

accident.

Use was/were going to and would +

base form to describe an action, event, or state that was planned or

expected in the past.

o She knew where she was going to

study.o I was going to eat that cookie.

o She knew it was going to be a

great year for her.

Future

1

They are used to say what you

think will happen in the future.

o I will eat ice cream tomorrow.

o We are going to have lots of

tests this week.

o Tomorrow we wont have

much homework.

Use will be or be going to be +

base form + (-ing) to describe an

action that will be in progress (will

continue to happen) at a certain

time in the future.

o I’ll be visiting you next week.

o We’ll be spending lots of time

together.

o A week from today we’ll be

eating cake.

3Use the simple present to talk

about a future action, state, or

event that is part of a schedule or

timetable.

o We leave in two hours.

o The plane arrives at noon.

o She gets here on Friday.

Use the present progressive to

talk about a future action or

event that has already been

arranged.

o We’re traveling to Italy next

week.

o She taking the test next week.

o He’s driving me to school

tomorrow.

To talk about two separate

actions in the future, use will or be

going to in the independent

clause and the simple present in

the depend clause.

o You’ll eat cake when you get

here.

o We’ll solve the problem when

the time comes.

o I’ll leave for your hose as soon

as my mom get home.

Use the future perfect or future

perfect progressive t to show an

action, state, or event that will

happen before a certain time in

the future.

o By the end of the week’ I’ll

have done over five exams.

o Be the end of 2015, we’ll have

graduated.

o By the end of October, we’ll

be out of school.
